Neutron’s launch site is taking shape.

While we’re gearing up for the next Electron launch from @NASAWallops in the coming days, here’s what the Neutron team have been up to on the new pad right next door.

https://twitter.com/RocketLab/status/1769841445010329698

Concrete is flowing fast on the launch mount, a dedicated new pad for Neutron designed to enable rapid turnaround between missions.

https://twitter.com/RocketLab/status/1769841701693358489

Just a 5-minute drive from the pad, the Neutron Integration Facility is under construction. It’s from this facility that completed Neutron rockets will roll out to the pad before taking to the skies.

It sounds like other KO tenants suffer the worst, to be honest.

Utterly shameful the previous government let it get this far.

Lemmyvision is a competition where you nominate a song from your country from the last year and everyone votes on their favourite. More info here.

We have until the end of the month to select and enter something from NZ released after 1/1/2023.

Post your suggestions below and upvote the ones you want to be submitted.

I'm hoping other people have suggestions as I can't name any songs from 2023 let alone (edit: a 2023) one from NZ 😆

Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

This one should have happened a long time ago, a lot of the resistance to state housing being built stems from the antisocial behaviour from a minority of tenants. Living next to social housing shouldn't be something to dread.

Council leaders in the Wellington region are looking at plans that could see their councils amalgamated.

At the Wellington Regional Leadership Committee meeting on Tuesday, mayors from Wairarapa, Hutt Valley, Kāpiti and Wellington will discuss the possibility of a regional deal.

A regional deal is a plan that allows an area or city to work with central government on long-term issues for the region.

Amalgamating councils is being pitched so that challenges around the structure of local government in the region can be addressed.

Under the early plans there would be one council for Wairarapa, one for Wellington, the Hutt Valley and Porirua and one for Kāpiti and potentially Horowhenua.

There would still be one regional council.

"Can we continue with nine local authorities across the region? Or is there some merit in starting to combine local authorities and get some economies of scale, get more joined up thinking around infrastructure connectivity?"

I though I'd better make a post about recent lemmy.world federation issues, since not everyone sees the daily posts.

TL;DR:

  • Lemmy.world inbound federation is about 18 hours behind, and slowly catching up.
  • Outbound is fine: If you post or comment on something in a lemmy.world community, it will be almost instantly federated to other users, but if they reply to you then it will take 18 hours before you see it.
  • It was caused by an assumed Kbin bug in combination with a lemmy bug
  • All other instances seem fine for inbound and outbound federation

On Thursday last week Lemmy.world began to receive hundreds of thousands of "activities" (actions - comment, post, upvote, etc) from Kbin to their communities. These actions then federate from Lemmy.world out to any instance with users subscribed to those communities.

Unfortunately, this also helped uncover a big issue with how Lemmy handles inbound federation. Actions are sent one at a time, and the next can't be sent until the last is done. This means the number of activities your server can receive depends on the latency between the sending and receiving server. In our case, the fact we are hosted in Auckland and Lemmy.world is hosted in Finland means that we can receive about 4 or 5 inbound activities from them per second.

When the Kbin issue happened, suddenly Lemmy.world had hundreds of thousands of activities to send to us in addition to the normal inflow of content. We got way behind in terms of Lemmy.world content coming to us. At the peak, we were around 28 hours behind, about 550k activities behind. We are now sitting at around 19 hours behind, and will likely remain that way until this afternoon, when it should improve some more (it's now peak time on the other side of the world).

Here is a graph of the progress. Aussie.zone has a similar problem to us, but is closer to Europe where lemmy.world is hosted so the latency issue is less pronounced. We are one of the worst affected instances due to how it's hard to get further away than where we are now.

graph of lemmy.nz and aussie.zone showing how many activities each are behind, over the past 3 or 4 days. Huge jump, peaking at 550k, then slowly coming down, lemmy.nz about halfway down (250k), and aussie.zone finally reaching the bottom, to be only a few hundred behind (seconds or minutes of delay instead of hours)

As you can see, with Aussie.zone being a bit closer, they were hit hard but not as hard as us, and have now managed to recover. We are still probably days away from being back in near real time federation with lemmy.world, but each day does seem to improve quite a bit.

Other than picking up the server and moving it to Europe, there doesn't seem to be a lot we can do except wait and hope the lemmy bug is fixed before lemmy.world grows so large that users are creating content faster than we can receive it.

There have been some suggestions for short term band-aids. One is that we could set up a proxy in Europe, and filter out certain traffic. For example, we could prevent downvotes being sent to reduce the amount of traffic coming our way (since everything is sent one at a time, as per the ActivityPub protocol). I'm not super keen on doing anything that gets us out of sync with the others, though.

We could of course move hosting to Europe, but that gets a lot more expensive (since we'd have to pay for it instead of being free-loaders) and also means the site would feel more sluggish, since then that latency would be for users on every page load instead of the behind the scenes federation.

For now we are slowly getting back in sync with lemmy.world, and as long as there aren't more Kbin bugs then we should be ok for now. Unfortunately doing things like blocking Kbin.social doesn't seem to help, as lemmy.world still tries to send us the content from Kbin.social users. i.e. it's rejected by our server, not prevented from being sent, so it still takes a slot.

Any questions, suggestions, or concerns, reply to this post!

I didn't actually know they were building a new wharf on Somes, it's great that the island is getting more infrastructure. And great they caught the ants, obviously.

Brave Search released a feature a which lets you customize search results. It's always a bit of a hassle searching for gear which is either made in NZ or ships to NZ, so I had a go at making one which prioritises outdoors gear which is made here (or failing that, is sold here).

You can test it here

Disclaimer: I work at Brave, though not on the search team

Examples of decisions today by for Minister Bishop’s consideration include:

· Increasing walking catchments to allow housing intensification – from Tawa in the north to Newtown in the south.

· Intensification of the Kilbirnie suburban centre to be first subject to community consultation.

· Classifying the Johnsonville railway line as ‘rapid transit’ – enabling housing developments of up to six storeys close to rail stations along the line’s route.

· Extending the central city zone south on Adelaide Rd toward Newtown and making bigger (15-minute) walking catchments, providing for more housing units.

· Reducing the city’s ‘character areas’ from 206 hectares to 85 hectares.

· Removing the heritage listings for the following buildings: Gordon Wilson Flats, the Miramar Gas Tank, Emeny House, Kahn House, Olympus Apartments, Wharenui Apartments, Robert Stout Building, Primitive Methodist Church, Johnsonville Masonic Hall, Star of the Sea Chapel.

A solo diner in the market for a hotpot has taken action against a restaurant after he learned he would have to pay the price of two customers if he wanted the dish.

While he accepted Red Hill did not decline to provide hotpot to him because he was single or that he was treated less favourably for that reason, he claimed the charging policy had the effect of treating him differently and was indirectly discriminatory.

But the restaurant denied its actions were discriminatory and said the policy applied to everyone and was not limited to customers with a particular marital status.

In its decision, which was made on the papers, the tribunal said the essence of the claim was about the minimum charge for a serving of hotpot and how large that serving should be.

"If anyone wants to order that quantity of hotpot for that price, there is no prohibition preventing any diner from doing so. Had Red Hill simply set out the price for hotpot, no exception could be taken."

The tribunal found any discrimination alleged was therefore merely theoretical and did not give rise to material disadvantage.
