Canvas 2026 - what should we draw? (self.newzealand)

Canvas starts on the 18th of July, less than 3 weeks away. It's an annual event where we place one pixel at a time and work together to create a masterpiece.

Here are efforts from previous years:

2024 and 2025 have canvas atlases to tell you about the different parts.

Looking for ideas on what to do for this year. Full plans or just suggestions for items to incorporate are appreciated!

There is always the freashly updated logo to show the world

Too much?

Image with LemmyNZ logo, words stating !newzealand@lemmy.nz, with a laser kiwi, fantail, penguin, and gumboots on NZ or in the bits that dodn't have much else to draw. Different from previous as the lemmyNZ logo is now converted to canvas colours only, so much fewer colours

Has too many kiwis. What about a weta or a kowhai flower to give it more colour?

Also what's the doohickey between the kiwis

Thanks for the feedback, good call. How's this? Laser kiwi is a good starting point for an across-canvas laser beam so I'm keen to keep it. Oh and the doohickey is a little kayak that we've used as filler in previous years. Have removed for the moment.

There's some good variety now, flora, fauna, fgumboots. The only other suggestions I could have are lake Taupo, and maybe more spacing between the things. The fantail is excellent

Taupō is hard to add at this scale and with the colours we have available but I've tried to put it in now! When I took a map of NZ and scaled it to this size the whole Taupō lake was one pixel lol, but I've given it 3 here. I also removed the penguin and shifted things a little to try to add the space. Or should the penguin stay?

Keep the penguin, we're all Linux users here

Taupō looks good!

I can't think of anything else, you can always keep adding more and more details, snow caps, trees, lakes, etc, lake wanaka,

If the scale was larger you could add a hobbit door.. or a paeroa l&p etc.. but I don't think there's enough of us to go that hard out

Sweet. This is a 1:1 version that can be used as a template.

I've added it into this mega template which is used by some for planning. Added at ~~200,200~~ 220,120 which is currently free. So long as we can get started straight away and get the outline done it should be ok to not bump into anyone not aware of the pre-planning template.

It runs from July 18th (4am UTC) to July 20th (also 4am UTC)

I think this means it starts 4pm on Saturday NZ time, 6 days from now.

Yeah my suggestion has the new logo in the background. I might have a go at converting the colours into the available canvas colours and see how it comes out.
