STUDY RESULTS
GIVING POOR PEOPLE MONEY REDUCES CRIME MORE THAN GIVING COPS THAT SAME AMOUNT OF MONEY
CONCLUSION
If you want to reduce crime, take care of your community's primary needs instead of funding cops so much

[an orange character in a suit has stamped a paper labeled MORE POLICE FUNDING BILL, and is grinning]
Heh, you think we don't know?

Republicans are often seen to be better on crime. Not because crime goes down under republicans, but because they talk about cops and punishment more.

Easy sell: stop crime by going after criminals.

Harder sell: stop crime by preventing the things that make people criminals.

Americans are not a mature people. They find it scarier to be without a gun than to be without a doctor.

Their mentality on crime is that they wanna punish bad guys. They don't care about justice, they just wanna "fight bad guys" like in an action movie. We can see this in how they obsess over Lindsay Clancy. They don't care that she has psychosis and would be better served in a mental institution, they saw that she did something bad and they wanna see her punished.

The reasons for her actions are not important, the fact that there's a better solution is not important, the fact that Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity doesn't mean she gets to go home is not important.

She's a bad guy, and bad guys get punished.

Americans favor punishment over rehabilitation not because rehabilitation doesn't work (Other countries that focus on it show that it definitely does), but because they are immature and care more about "Fighting bad guys" than actual justice.

People are pretty stupid and uncritically believe the myths about the republican party. Guy I worked with said "the republicans will unlock the economy" so he voted for trump. And then tariffs borked his business, and the war in iran probably killed some of his family. But he still jokes, as an iranian immigrant, about ICE abductions. Some people are just stupid.

Yes, the propaganda is strong. Republicans have been objectively, scientifically proven bad for the economy, for blue collar workers, for crime, for reducing abortions, for religious freedom and for small government in the last... at least 5 decades.

But people believe that those are exactly the issues Republicans would address better than democrats.

I met a Persian that hates other Persians and loves Israel. People are indeed stupid as fuck.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 19 points 19 hours ago

Some people are stupid, but most I think are selfish and narrow minded, but also not stupid.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 23 points 18 hours ago

That's exactly it.

The GOP cornered the moronic "Law & Order" narrative because they're fascists who want a police state.

Establishment Dems also want a police state but know their voterbase doesn't. So they try to sell a police state, under different words, and still refuse to talk about any actually meaningful alternatives. Its why cunts like Hakeem Jefferies refuse to fight to abolish ICE even though abolishing ICE polls better than "reforming" it.

Only DSA candidates are pushing real solutions. That's why establishment Dems are fighting them harder in 1 year than they've fought Trump in 10 years.

I will be the greatest president. Using my superior prescient abilities I will stop the events that produce criminals to begin with. The entire country will be crime free at the end of my term. With the strength of a tactician's mind America will be the greatest country in the world

Same with conservatives in Europe – and it's also the same with government efficiency. They get "issue ownership" because they talk about it a lot, but I've never heard of conservative politicians who've actually made government more efficient.

[-] nanometer1625@thelemmy.club 2 points 12 hours ago

This definitely used to be true, but now that they're okay with the leader of their party using the FBI to cover up his own child sex abuse scandal, any Republican who asserts that they're tough on crime is going to lose that debate.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 12 points 19 hours ago

It's a harder sell, but it's impacted by media straight up not talking about policy that way. Investigative journalism in America (and probably the broader West) is essentially dead, so the public becomes wildly uninformed and has to go off vibes.

[-] danc4498@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago

Definitely true. I think it’s a big part because of who owns the media.

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 19 hours ago

If the pope would crack down on crime more with all that Vatican money the republicans wouldn't have to spend so much on crime. Pretty much nothing bad is really their fault fyi.

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
