Defend? Yes.

Lose? Also yes.

Begin a long, ruthless, bloody painful insurgency that makes Vietnam and Afghanistan look like a retirement home sewing circle? TABERNAK LE FUCK OUI.

(for those who may not understand the switch to French, it is a reference to the phrase "will not fall until the last shell has been fired from the last cannon by the hand of the last French Canadian)

This is where I wish the Canadian government would buy a couple.million assault riffles and ammo. Bring in ex military, police, and train them on the weapons and in insurgency tactics. Then if relations continued to slump start signing out weapons to those who are trustworthy. Think IRA weapons caches and team cells.

The US would definelty think twice knowing there were a few hundred thousand well armed individuals scattered around.

That’s roughly what the mobilization reserve is intended as

They can also lift the stupid gun bans from 2020 on and also have a civilian training program to show how to resist invasion and occupation effectively. We also need to vet people to build an ready made resistance force that can be activated in case on an invasion.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

I was infantry.

Casuals do not need automatic weapons.

[-] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Disagree. "Casuals" are not stupid. They can be trained just like you were, and it's not rocket science.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Also there is a hell of a lot more to resistance than guns, explosives, and drones or even cyber warfare. Sometimes just knowing how to be polite but also entirely uncooperative and extremely unhelpful. The OSS Simple Sabotage manual has some decent ideas on how to make it work, but it needs a 21st century update.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Never said automatic. The semi-auto bans are stupid as is the handgun freeze.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world -1 points 2 days ago

look at you guys larping.

You know why we don't have that? Because Canada is a huge as fuck land-claim with an incredibly small population, and the state would be more concerned about anti-colonial or anticapitalist militias popping up than anything else. Canada is occupied territory.

[-] ArmchairAce1944@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Pretty much, and do not think for one moment that they're concerned with criminal use of guns or mass shooters. They're quite comfortable with those. The polytechnique shooting happening in 1989 was perfect timing for them to use it as an excuse for gun laws when the real reason was likely the Oka Crisis.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

You really think middle-class Canadians have the same vim as people who fought imperialists for generations by the time Americans invaded? The way you guys respond to this shit with power fantasies is incredible.

I'm fine with people fighting the US, but I don't think you're going to do well if you think you're able to welcome it.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

I'm afraid that as a middle class Canadian, I don't understand your last sentence.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

People talking as though they take pride in their supposed fortitude against the US aren't the kind of people who understand what violence is like to live in by merit of thinking it would be glorious. I'm saying if you're someone who thinks it is a given that Canadians would stomp the US or whatever in a guerilla war, you are welcoming something that you do not understand.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Violence and war is never glorious, it is a painful, horrific and most terrible thing. However, it has been repeatedly shown to have been unfortunately needed.

By its very definition no side "stomps" the other in a guerrilla war. The intent is to make the occupier so uncomfortable that they eventually give up. It is a classic example of fourth generation warfare.

You should read my other comment here on the casual interest in military history and inflated sense of authority with which you guys talk about this. You can't make a comment like you made and then pretend it doesnt underplay the gravity of this possibility; especially after suggesting that, somehow, people in colonized spaces don't have the fighting heart of some of the most privileged settlers in the fucking world.

Yeah, sure dude, totally, you understand what it is enough to know when it is "needed." Cowardly.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

I would think that a career of over fifteen years in the Canadian Armed Forces after having escaped from a country torn by civil war and genocide might give me some background in the topics of military force, the willingness of the CAF to fight and armed resistance against tyranny, but, as citizens of a (relatively) free country, we are all entitled to our opinions and allowed to voice them.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Why the fuck would being in the military give you a working understanding of the culture and history of US and Canadian imperialism? You an aerospace engineer too?

If anyone in the CAF cared about tyranny, they wouldn't be there.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

You are more than welcome.

[-] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I agree the comparison to other wars America lost is discord level discourse but appreciate the overall energy.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Most middle class Canadians?

Absolutely not

But enough to make every invader's lives miserable? Oh hell yes. You only need a few dozen people in Canada yo pull this off and I know we have much, much more than that both in Canada AND US territories...

Combined with deeply intertwined societies, inherently porous border and absolutely no clear signifiers of whether an unknown individual is Canadian or American? Even a very small insurgency will be nighmarishly hard to deal with.

Never mind that it’s not hard to picture there being true sympathizers in the states in real numbers.

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I think too many of you confuse your casual interest in military tactics and history as having the sufficient expertise to speculate on war. Nobody is saying there wouldn't be fighting, Im saying Canadians do not understand what fighting would actually mean, and honestly, these kinds of comment threads are great examples of that.

I don't think I'm arguing with that actually...

The point I'm making ISN'T that the blowhards and nationalists are actually who would fight... but that if ANYONE did, and someone would, it would be extraordinarily difficult to control. And frankly, the impact of actual fighting would be out of all proportion to how significant it really is militarily to the United States

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

You know what a thermobaric weapon is? You ever think about one landing on loved ones you live with; or living across the street from its target?

I don't doubt there's people who will fight back, I just know it isn't you or many if any of the people on this site. The demos skew older, middle-class, STEM employed white cishet men, and the diversity ranges typically still include privileged classes. No Canadian settler alive has experienced war at the end of an imperial weapon like the US military; or any military. So, no, I don't think the people on here who gleefully roleplay as guerilla freedom fighters from their desks really understand what they're talking about.

[-] RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

You are a better armchair general than the rest of us.

Was that what you wanted to hear? Then you can leave now

[-] orioler25@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

I love that you literally couldn't read this as anything other than the larp the rest of you engage in.

"Real life isn't Call of Duty," indicated to you that I want to seem knowledgeable about the military, because you couldn't imagine a different perspective; just about sums up the Canadian community on here.

[-] RaphaelSchmitz@feddit.org 1 points 3 hours ago

Oh no, it wasn't just that comment, it's the whole ego trip you're going on under this post.
