I fucking hate this kind of people, I'm sorry, but I do. My country is full of them, this is literally the default here...
Save meeee, I wanna go to the Netherlands or some place 😭

I am cisfem, I wrestled for 6 years ending my junior year after copious amounts of harassment and a sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuit against one of my coaches. Fun! We moved around a lot so I experienced a lot of attitudes around it. Not all bad, some of my coaches were super into having me, one was having a baby daughter with his wife and followed my career to the end! I’m sure she knows all about me!

These days there are girl’s programs for that all over the place, but back then my choice was to be on a boy’s team or, if offered (never was) gymnastics was supposed to be a physically equivalent sport if the school had both, so had I gone somewhere big with both gymnastics and wrestling I could have never gone nearly to state in wrestling and been offered tryouts for the olympics.

I didn't place well enough, because I come from a shitty country that trains people in yokel wrestling and not what they do everywhere else, but that’s not the point. I didn't want to do gymnastics, I'm not coordinated. I have no interest in something where I can fall and hurt myself, other than climbing trees and short buildings. I’d never have been good enough to try out for the olympics as a gymnast. Most of my wins were mat technique or pins, and I created a cradle nobody could mimic or get out of if they got into it, because they were too lanky to have leverage, because they were adolescent boys, I had flexibility and “stopped growing at 12 and started training” short girl muscle.

Thanks for letting me rave about my long past history :)

Firstly, I'm very sorry to hear about the harassment you received. That shit sucks.

Secondly, I'd be very interested to hear more about what you meant by your country not teaching modern wrestling. (I assume we're talking freestyle rather than Greco-Roman?) Has it really changed that much?

The US does folkstyle throughout non-college school years, rather than either of the forms of wrestling that are done in olympics. Its just an entirely different system. If you want to learn freestyle to be internationally competitive or wrestle for colleges, you have to spend a ton of money on camps and stuff to learn.

The main US wrestling for guys in college is also still folkstyle. Back awhile ago you could find freestyle tournaments but they weren't official college matches, although they're probably more popular/widespread now. Never knew anyone who wrestled greco though.

If women these days wrestle in college under freestyle I wonder if there'll be a push to get a men's league as well. Seems a little silly to be the only country that does non-olympic wrestling, or at least with a wrestling that's pretty damn close to freestyle. I know plenty of other forms of wrestling exist (like ssireum, Mongolian wrestling, sumo, etc) but they're at least not terribly close to the Olympics.

Oh I have no idea what college-level uses, or if its the same between mens and womens divisions. I assume it is, since women’s programs aren’t terribly widespread even now (frankly even men’s wrestling isn't big at the college level, most schools don’t offer it at all in my experience). It makes sense I guess that it’s still folk, but I’d just assumed it was freestyle cuz the one college I looked at with a wrestling program was freestyle. Might have just been club activities though, this was decades back by now. But yeah I also found it rather odd that we set ourselves up for failure that way.

I had a friend who did greco for a while, huge tank of a dude. Fun to watch but never wanted to try myself.

I was just surprised because the wikipedia freestyle wrestling article mentioned that the WCWA wrestled freestyle. As far as I can see the men's divisions still wrestle folk. I think wrestling popularity in general is regional though. I wrestled in a small division and we had to travel pretty far to get to tournaments all the time, but the NCAA is pretty huge and wrestling at least in the midwest is massive I think.

  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.

  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
