I'd argue the coffee is better for you vs the monster but don't smoke.

[-] Pratai@piefed.ca 4 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

And vaping is barely better than traditional cigs despite what people want to believe. They’re both horrible in different ways.

[-] Lennard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 6 days ago

Don't get me wrong. Vaping is a highly underregulated market, and only god knows what the flavoring and coloring additives might do to your health. Even the health impacts of liquid base are not fully understood. BUT people who say vapes are just as bad as cigarettes, don't fully comprehend the damages done by repeatedly inhaling actual smoke.

[-] mirshafie@europe.pub 6 points 6 days ago

This right here. Vaping needs way more regulation, but come on, the physics here are quite straightforward.

[-] apotheotic@beehaw.org 1 points 5 days ago

repeatedly inhaling actual smoke.

As compared to liquid vapor, which lungs are known to really enjoy ;P

Not necessarily disagreeing with you that cigarettes are a good chunk worse than vapes, just a funny

[-] medem@lemmy.wtf 34 points 1 week ago

No need to argue. Caffeine is only bad for your health if you take insane amounts of it, and coffee itself has actual benefits, something you could literally never state about energy drinks. As for smoking vs. vaping, dunno.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 14 points 1 week ago

Coffee filtered through paper filters to remove the cafestol, in moderation, shows marked health benefits.

If your coffee tastes like piss and your piss smells like coffee, take a break.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

3-6 mg of cafeine per KG of bodymass according to research cited on the old before-brainworm FDA website.

[-] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

However moderation is defined, seems like it can't be moderation if you do it all the time.

[-] boonhet@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

Is vitamin B really that bad for you? Or taurine?

The caffeine is mostly what makes energy drinks unhealthy too. That and the sugar but white monster is sugar free so if you put shit in your coffee instead of drinking it properly (black and no sugar), I'd argue that coffee is just as bad for you as energy drinks.

[-] despoticruin@anarchist.nexus 4 points 6 days ago

B6 can cause nerve damage long term. Taurine is just a part of bile, it is an amino acid that is in basically all meat. You aren't going to get enough of it from energy drinks to swing the needle one way or the other. They also have sugar or sugar alcohols that can fuck with blood glucose in all kinds of fun ways. Coffee, on its own, is basically just caffeine and water, it is going to be healthier than most other drinks categorically.

[-] UiUiUiUiUi@piefed.nl 1 points 5 days ago

The high salt content in Monster is not to be overlooked, a coffee a day keeps the kidney stones away.

[-] thethunderwolf@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 days ago

also aluminium cans = microplastics

aluminium is not safe for storing wet acidic things such as drinks, so the inside is plastic-coated

i wonder, which is worse: the microplastics, or the aluminium salts that would be the alternative problem?

[-] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 6 days ago

I knew there was a reason I craved the strength and certainty of steel...

[-] Gaja0@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

Honestly been wondering that a lot. I drink coffee daily. I don't feel like it's killing me. Surely it's not as bad as monster, but what if the amount I drink comes close to the same impact? Is receiving a daily dose of mental stimulants not supposed be part of a healthy diet? 🫠

[-] Elting@piefed.social -2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Vaping is turning out just as bad as smoking the more we learn of its long term consequences.

[-] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 5 points 6 days ago

I never heard this. do you have sources that I can read to learn more?

[-] Elting@piefed.social 1 points 6 days ago

https://med.stanford.edu/visit/the-details/HealthEffects.html

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12628669/

https://www.lung.org/blog/vaping-isnt-harmless

https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/e-cigarettes/health-effects.html

There is still a dearth of evidence compared to 100+ years we have for smoking tobacco but the more we learn the less it’s possible to ignore how it’s turning out. Remember for decades that tobacco companies white washed cigarette smoking and even tried to make it sound therapeutic.

Non-smoker current vapers had higher incident risk of respiratory symptoms (relative risk, RR=1.90; 95% CI: 1.28–2.83) but statistically non-significant risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (RR=2.53; 95% CI: 0.96–6.67) compared to never users. They also had lower incident risk of respiratory symptoms compared to non-vaper current smokers (RR=0.75; 95% CI: 0.64–0.89) and dual users (dual use vs vaping, RR=1.26; 95% CI: 1.03–1.55).

Do you guys ever read what you link or what? We consistently know that vaping is bad for respiratory health but better than smoking, it's very well established at this point

[-] Elting@piefed.social -2 points 6 days ago

And in another one of those links it explains that we really don’t know yet. It hasn’t been long enough to gather all the data. But please continue to cherry pick whatever supports your claim.

[-] Nalivai@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I'm not making any claims, you are

[-] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 4 points 6 days ago

E-cigarettes may have the potential to benefit adults who smoke and are not pregnant if used as a complete substitute for all smoked tobacco products.

This sentence in the last link that you included contractics the suggestion that vaping is just as bad as smoking.

[-] Elting@piefed.social -2 points 6 days ago

I think there is also a specific use for cigarettes in that fashion, in any case cope harder. Vaping is bad for you.

[-] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 3 points 6 days ago

The original comment said "vaping is just as bad as smoking" but the links intended to support that claim said vaping is a better substitute than smoking. Better doesn't mean healthy, it means less bad.

This seems like an opportunity to learn something, but instead you choose to cry, "cope harder" to someone that tried having a conversation in good faith, and doesn't even use nicotine products.

[-] Elting@piefed.social -2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

The original comment says that “As we learn more vaping is turning out as bad as smoking” not “vaping is as bad as smoking” those two statements are not equivalent. My point, more eloquently stated and harder to mis-represent, would be that one shouldn’t assume vaping to be a healthier alternative before we have all the data and really know especially when we do know that vested interests have mislead public opinion on the use of nicotine products in the past.
