Lots of responses coming in on the survey!
I think I'll let it run through to tomorrow morning or so, but in general the sentiment seems to be yes to a Rocket Lab community, but no clear direction on what criteria should be used for adding communities, lots of support for a case by case basis.
Of course there is time for that to change. I'll do a post of aggregate results at some point, as it will likely be of interest to many people, especially the demographics. I've read the comments but in the interest of anonymity I won't publish individual responses publically, if people want to post their views they can do that themselves.
I'd also like to do an annual census like Lemmy.ca does, but I'm in no hurry. Perhaps June would be appropriate, around the instance birthday.
I cracked up at your response to someone who suggested your decision to do a survey was inclusive and you were like I just don't want to take responsibility for the decision.
As I said in the survey, my preference is for a more broad aerospace community, as topics like Starlink, Google Loon etc also affect NZ, and I'd like the opportunity to talk about them as well.
Starlink, in particular, has the ability to massively change how we do things in the outdoors, the ability to have cell service anywhere will make staying in touch, checking weather etc possible without forking out a few hundred dollars for an Inreach.
Until Musk has the market captured and then hikes the price because there's nobody you can buy a similar service from.
I mean, they've got the market captured right now, don't they? Who else has a constellation like theirs up and running?
Yeah, the idea of a NZ space community was raised previously. Personally, in my mind that has a different target audience, and those posts are better in the main !newzealand community.
If you're keen to discuss NZ space topics, I'm confident they would be welcome in !newzealand.
