New Plymouth dog owners play it safe when it comes to naming their pooches, with Bella proving the top dog in the naming stakes.

It is the most common dog name registered with the district council, with 155 pooches answering to Bella followed by Poppy (138), Charlie (122), Max (120) and Luna (118).

Animal Control Supervisor Scott Goldfinch said there were also more unusual choices.

"Then there are the unique names, like Autobot and Winnifred Wolf Allen. And personally, I really like Ronnie Barker."

For a minute I was confused about how thier name effects thier safety ๐Ÿ˜… was thinking "I guess they might follow the wrong person home if they call them, seems unlikely", but they were meaning playing it safe in the sense of not being very creative... ๐Ÿคฆ

It is a bit of an odd title. On the main page it was listed:

155 dogs with the same name in one town

But then when you click into it the heading is about playing it safe with dog names.

Bella for a female and Charlie for a male are the most popular pet names in the US as well.

I must admit, some decade ago, I did name my rabbit Charlie.

Ronnie Barker is solid gold.

Right up with my favourite cat name of all time: Chairman Meow.
