  • Cash shop in a single player game.

  • Contains Denuvo and requires a Ubisoft account to use their shitty launcher.

  • Has adverts in-game.

  • Launched with $85 of DLC.

  • Immediately started laying off workers after launch.

Fuck Ubisoft, and if you bought this game, fuck you too.

[–] Thassodar@sh.itjust.works 41 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Honestly the "laying people off after launch" speaks volumes of the teams that do the same; can you not work multiple projects and shift people to the other one until it's complete?

The layoffs seem more like "line must go up'" than any kind of "we can no longer afford you now the job is done".

I'm probably preaching to the choir.

[–] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah, totally.

I really dislike the dishonesty. If you're always going to lay-off/downsize/insert-capitalist-euphemism-here after each project is done then stop hiring people as staff and hire them as contractors instead. Make it clear from the start it's not a permanent position.

[–] BlaestEgnen@feddit.dk 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But that's more expensive, as people demand 50-100% more salary as a contractor; Line must go up faster

[–] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yup, exactly 👍

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

This is literally always the case

It's self-cannibalizing also. Layoffs are now the only way for them to maximize profits enough for their shareholders to get their ROI, and in the future even that won't be enough. They will be drained of every ounce of value that can be extracted of them and then discarded. Such is the fate of every company that gets in bed with wall street.

Running AC4 on my modified Xbox console. 0 issues, 0 bucks paid for the game, 0 fucks given.

Ubisoft ruined one too many games. My beloved Rocksmith now is a useless microtransaction shell of its former power. I won't buy a single ubisoft game in the future. Time to lay rest to the cancer they brought into gaming.

[–] QueenMidna@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm so glad I got at least some songs on Rocksmith before they were pulled from the Xbox store. The new version is absolute trash

Which is so fucking braindead - they could have just as easily leveraged that now-experienced team to get a Assassin’s Creed - Rogue remake out in good time, especially as that has more of the same Black Flag ship mechanics, and most players missed out due to the transition from PS3 > PS4.

Sea shanties now cost $0.50 per word sung.

[–] elvith@feddit.org 28 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Why, are they generated by AI and you have to pay for the tokens? /s

[–] Sturgist@lemmy.ca 25 points 2 weeks ago

Ubi was a dev that I paid dearly,

Wey-hey bully in the alley,

And if they could they'd charge us all yearly,

Bully down on Shinbone Al'!

[–] Fizz 40 points 2 weeks ago

if ye buy from the cash shop ye a landlubber not a captain

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 39 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

The comments online are nuts. "The original had it so it's a nothing burger".

Wtf are you smoking to think it's okay to accept micro transaction on a single player game that's a remake from a decade ago?

Remember when it came out in 2020 that Ubisoft had an internal sex ring in which the upper management were preying on the women in the development staff?

I haven't played an Ubisoft game since, including some favorites.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Holy shit that was wilder than I expected

Patrux bullied and harassed others by violence and setting a colleague's beard on fire.

[–] itsjustachairmary@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Somehow I had memory holed this. Just generally hate Ubisoft. But jesus fucking christ I remember this coming out. Yea fuck Ubisoft.

Glad I had zero hopes for this from the start. Just gonna wait for Windrose to 1.0 for my pirate fix instead of bothering with this.

The company run by sex predators is doing other unsavoury shit, you say?

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Looks like I'll just wait to pirate this pirate game. :D

[–] cheat700000007@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

It leaked a few days before launch

Eh? The original had a cash shop too, and some stuff locked behind a mobile companion app AFAIK

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Pretty sure there were weekly challenges as well. It would tell you global stats of how many ships destroyed or whatever.

[–] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

I don't buy Ubisoft garbage.

[–] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

God damnit Ubisoft you had ONE more opportunity where you could have redeemed yourself and you just. Can't. Fucking. Stop.

[–] Escape13@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 weeks ago

Ok they can have one more chance and they better not ef it up this time. Jk fuck Ubisoft and all their ancestors

[–] ZkhqrD5o@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck Ubisoft.

[–] raspirate@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Not defending this, but it did remind me of how nuts the monetization was on the original. I had a modded 360 at the time, and there used to be an old school forum style website that curated all available DLC. This game had exclusive content for GameStop, Walmart, Target, and I think a 4th and 5th retailer too. Not to mention the pre-order bonuses and other exclusives. I wanna say there were around 25 different pieces of content and to get 100% of what was available, youd've had to buy 5 retail copies of the same game... or have a modded 360 and an internet connection. Even unlocking the content was more of a hassle than most DLCs. You had to move your user profile to a USB stick, connect it to your PC, inject the entitlements to the exclusive costumes into your profile, then move the profile back to your console.

And off the wishlist, it goes.

[–] PhenomenJan@lemmy.today 5 points 2 weeks ago

Black Flag is 13 years old?! Now I feel old.

[–] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 weeks ago

The original holds up quite well, at least on PC with highest settings and resolution you can get. I never finished the game to be honest and thought to myself to revisit it to finally get the job done. But then waited for the Remake and it looks like its not a must have.

About the cash shop, one could just ignore it, right?

[–] Drekaridill@lemmy.wtf 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Didn't Ubisoft collapse or something?

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 weeks ago

Can I join your reality? Seems nice to live somewhere where moronic choices produce tangible consequences to those that made them, but that's not how it works where I live.
