I have a feeling these were designs, and about as popular in actual use as this item from a 2023 Paris fashion show

Is that David Blaine? Maybe this is a magic trick?

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

Yeah, first of all, this wasn't what the average person wore. This was something that a rich person wore to show off their wealth. Second of all, it was probably not their "everyday wear", but something they wore for a special occasion like "Fashion Week".

And early-20th-century Germans dressed like this (on at least one occasion):

This is some Frank Herbert s*** right here.

This might well be from Reval, a Hansa city that traded primarily in furs and timber. Seems like the kind of outfit you'd come up with if your was to show off how much fur you had access to.

[–] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 3 points 5 days ago

Reval is Tallinn (in Estonia), so perhaps the thick fur enclosure is hot enough to work as a sort of "personal travel sauna"?

Every society goes through these silly phases, most grow out of it. Unlike the house of lords...

[–] M0oP0o@mander.xyz 5 points 6 days ago

They liked their lords uncircumcised.

[–] weariedfae@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

I unironically think this is dope. BRING IT BACK!

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago

Aliens visit earth after 400 years and come dressed as the natives - only to find they are regarded as wearing alien clothes now.
