My PS2 resumes like normal

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 84 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Still have a slim PS2 and wouldn’t you know it, it still plays all the games I bought for it.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 56 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Amazing. Maybe we could reverse-engineer it and figure out how the ancients achieved this technology.

[–] BigPotato@lemmy.world 15 points 14 hours ago

It was achieved by emblazoning the games on to sacred discs.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 20 points 15 hours ago

But that would be communism!

[–] AmyAye@nord.pub 4 points 12 hours ago

I put a hard drive in mine, now it also plays the games I didn't bought for it!

[–] RedIce25@lemmy.world 58 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Sony should fucking refund me for every one of my games that I bought that stops working

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 23 points 14 hours ago

I'll just never rent anything from them again. Fuck renting.

[–] thenoirwolfess@fedinsfw.app 8 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Bruh I cleaned my PS2, turned it on after being in storage for a decade, and it remembered what time it was. That cell battery is a goddamn king

And of course, discs and memory cards. I'm sure some folks' digital PS2 mods are also solid, and aren't affected by one of the weakest links, the read laser.

SNES/GBA game saves erasing due to batteries 😭

[–] kahjtheundedicated@lemmy.world 69 points 17 hours ago (3 children)

You’re telling me I’m going to have to replace the batteries and replay chrono trigger and Pokémon emerald again? Oh the horror

[–] 0k_@lemmy.world 27 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Pokemon Emerald's battery is only there for real time clock functions. Saves remain intact even after the battery runs dry.

Gen I and II games used the battery for save data, however.

Just play on an emulator. Save states anywhere you want.

GBA? The kids these days. I have an original Zelda cart for the NES that still holds save data.

My Atari VCS (this was before they were calling it the "2600") was manufactured in 1978. It's 48 years old, and if I slap E.T. into that son of a bitch, it plays.

[–] Asetru@feddit.org 16 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

if I slap E.T. into that son of a bitch, it plays.

But why would you do that?

the og atari and nes were video game consoles.

a 'modern' console is just a required hardware device to access a subscription service and game rentals falsely advertised as purchases.

Paradoxically, I’ll open GOG to replay Riven or Ultima Underworld, and I’ll find my last save, and feel silly seeing the last place I got stuck.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 15 points 13 hours ago

My PS2 has game saves from 2002 on it that still function.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 9 points 12 hours ago

I could start up sonic on my sega genesis right now.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 22 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

I fire my 8 bit Nintendo up every five years or so. As long as I blow in the cartridge I'm still good to go.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.world 11 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Fgs use a q-tip! Your saliva will corrode not only the cartridge but the contacts in the system.

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 10 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I've always been told not to put a qtip anywhere my elbow wouldn't fit.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.world 13 points 14 hours ago (5 children)

Then how do you clean your colon‽

[–] ContriteErudite@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

I ask one of my friends to use their elbow for me.

That's why I've never bought a digital game on console. For years, my strategy was to buy AAA games physically on console and indie games on PC via DRM-free services. Now that Sony is stopping physical disc production I won't have that option anymore, but luckily none of the AAA studios make anything worth a damn these days.

[–] MutantTailThing@lemmy.world 40 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

Yes, I expect that.

Just shake out the mouse turds and plug that fucker in

If the PSN account was deleted, this is less a PS3 issue and more a digital software licensing issue.

[–] WraithGear@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

i would say that it’s a PS3 issue due to being dependent on licensing issues prevent a user from playing games they own

Either way, it's Sony providing an inferior product

[–] hamid@crazypeople.online 4 points 10 hours ago

My Atari 2600 still works!

[–] borQue@lemmy.zip 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I still have an old cracked Doom 2 CD. No problems whatsoever... We're talking 30 years there

[–] Rooster326@programming.dev 1 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Doom 2.... CD?

I thought it only came on floppy...

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 hours ago

I love how you apparently think that Doom 2 is some obscure game that was only released once for MS-DOS on floppy disks.

[–] Stern@lemmy.world 28 points 16 hours ago

tfw i turn on my ps1 to play final fantasy 7 and my save where i go on a date with barret is still there.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 13 points 14 hours ago

I haven't even thought about it. I know where to find the games on the high seas and emulators are my preferred mode of play, although there are probably ways to run them on original hardware.

If buying isn't owning, then piracy isn't stealing.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 12 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Yes, yes that should be a normal expectation.

If you buy a game as a kid, play the fuck out of it, then end up tossing that console in a box or closet for a decade as you grow up, then when that nostalgic urge to play your old game again hits you should be able to plug the console in and play again. Not be told that your Xstation account was deleted because you didn't log in as ButtholeSurfer696969lol in the last few years so all of those purchases no longer exist.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 3 points 11 hours ago

I have pirated copies of Sierra online games from the 80s and some of them have saves made by the first person who uploaded them. Who were those people? No idea. But I would LOVE to know where they are now.

[–] corvi@piefed.social 16 points 16 hours ago

I find my DS every few years and it still just turns on with the same charge for the last decade and a half. No idea what they made those batteries out of.

[–] d.rizo@piefed.social 8 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

Just plugged it in and gave it a try... My NES still works... The "just plugged it in" part was a bit tedious,.. finding the right adapters,,😅🤣

My PS Vita spent years in a closet, I charged it and it was as good as new (maybe the battery needs to be swapped), so yes.

Just saying, the Xbox 360 doesn't have that problem, since buying a game gives a license to both the account and the console it has been bought on. So even if you get banned, your console should still be able to play the game with an other account. Of course they "patched" it with the Xbox One.
