Breeders and breeder-enablers 🤢🤢🤢
What's wrong with breeders?
Internet has a hard-on for virtue-signaling and black-and-white perspective, and "adopt, don't shop" is one of those. There is nothing wrong with ethical, responsible breeding.
There is, however, a lot wrong with unethical breeding (e.g. doll-face persians, scottish folds, pugs, frenchies, showline GSDs, etc., and backyard breeding as a whole) and official breed standards set by people who only care about the looks and not the health of the animal.
There is nothing wrong with ethical, responsible breeding.
Except that almost no one does it and 90% of breeders are just people having their animals fuck in their backyard.
Source: numbers came out of my ass, but I know a breeder and they were the second kind and agree.
90% of breeders are just people having their animals fuck in their backyard.
where do the animals fuck in the other 10%? Front yard?
Good breeders will have little hotel rooms with jungle themes. It's way classier.
Purebred = inbred. You can whitewash the process all you want, there's simply no way to make "purebreds" that isn't inherently unethical.
I'mma be honest, I've never heard "whitewash" used in this context. Had to look up the definition, and it turns out every other time I've heard it used was incorrect. Life is a fascinating ride.
Don't stop there. Keep explaining the problems with breeding while you talk shit about people who actually give a shit.
There is no ethical breeding as long as shelters are euthanizing to save space
I mean coming from someone who thinks treating pets as property is fucked up I don't think it's that hard to convince me that making them in a factory is a bad idea
there are millions of homeless animals, shelters are at capacity, and animals are euthanized by the thousands. paying money for something you can get for free is idiotic and unethical
i also feel this way about human adoption, but that's another argument

A neighbour has let their cat loose recently, despite it being illegal, and it's not even belled.
Now I get to enjoy my dogs losing it at the window late at night, the stench of piss as I go out the front door, and the birds living in my garden have gone, which is going to screw with the little ecosystem I got going.
You can never meet someone and still know they're an asshole because of their pet.
My parents had a Siamese cat that they’d taken in from an elderly lady next door when she moved into a nursing home.
My parents called the cat Felix, but her real name was Terry von Winzburg, and she even had a long pedigree.
Felix, aka Terry, lived to be 24 years old.
Our cat is also called Felix, although he looks like Felix the cat. I hope he lives to 24 aswell, he is coming up to 16 or 17 (we don't know for sure) and is still such a happy cat
RIP
Cats shouldn't be outside.
~~For those that don't know why, cats are very capable hunters and absolutely decimate bird populations. Keeping cats outdoors has genuinely horrendous ecological consequences unfortunately :/~~
Edit: this position may not be as well academically supported as I thought. For the time being I'm not sure if outdoor cats pose significant ecological risks, evaluate the paper below and do further research if you'd like to investigate the topic more yourself :)
Interesting!
The author does not deny that free-ranging cats affect wildlife populations and it is important that field researchers continue to monitor their effect. But future studies need to take into account what is known about cat predatory behavior, estimates of total prey population size, and interpret the data without prejudice. It remains to be seen whether the media consider and publish reports of less dramatic findings.
I don't have the scientific literacy to evaluate the quality of the paper or journal but thanks for sharing this, it seems like the idea that cats are so harmful to local wildlife may not be as well supported position as I though! Now I'm curious if there have been any meta analysis or systematic reviews since. The paper was published in 2022, which is pretty recent but it seems possible things have progressed and become more clear which would be neat
Thanks for the link! ☺️
Yes but so do foxes, birds of pray, wild cats if your country has them.
Yes
Sorry is it your position that invasive species are fine?
Istanbul says, 'what?'
As does the whole of the UK
The city I am forced to live in has a rat problem, to the point they'll raid garden patches.
Options are:
A) Introduce an apex predator B) Stop growing food and live with the rats C) Use traps and poison
The neighbour opted for option A, so now I also have no rats, and I've yet to find a dead bird. Then again, I live in a country where the wildlife has adapted to cats as an apex predator long before I was even born.
Yeah I do find the discussion about indoor or outdoor cats to be very Americentric much of the time. Cats have inhabited England for longer than the English have for example, so I feel unless you happen to be a Brythonic tribesman in the Roman period it's a bit of a silly argument to have outside of 'new world' countries.
Also the British bird population has audibly crashed in my lifetime, cats didn't do that (or it would have happened literal millennia ago) it's much more to do with climate change and excessive industrial agriculture destroying the habitats and species the birds depend on, particularly insects.
Someone else's $1,000 designer cat vs my $100 rescue

I genuinely don't see what that extra $900 bought
Bengals are genuinely awesome cats though, that will play fetch and go on walks.
Had to lookup "aurafarm" - turns out using the term is also doing it lol.
people get bengals for the wrong reasons, only for looks and for a "prop" dint realize because of its hybrid nature its very high energy. it is bred between an asian leopard cat and a domestic cat.
And what would be a "right" reason?
Honestly curious as my experience with cats has been that they will do whatever the fuck they want regardless of what they look like
Not who you're asking, but Bengals and other hybrid cats tend to be more dog like and require more playtime and even walks to burn off their energy. I would guess the right reason is because you want a higher energy playmate, not an exotic looking animal.
Only cat I ever really liked much was my neighbors savannah hybrid. Me and my dog would play with it all the time
My spouse and I have a Maine coon mix that is exactly like that. He plays fetch, has an exercise wheel that still doesn't tire him out enough to let me freakin sleep in the mornings, loves water, and even 'wags' his tail so much that it's beefy, just like the rest of him. All domestic cat, no need to hybridize them with wild cats and create at least 2-3 generations of animals that can't happily live indoors before you get something approaching a pet.
Vibemogged
~~purebred~~ inbred, genetically challenged
Whoa... I actualky know this twitter account, but for a fucking crazy reason lol.
My fanfic writer has a pure-bred cat?

There is unethical behaviour on both parts. Overbred indoor cat, and (hopefully neutered) outdoor cat that ruins wildlife populations of birds and other sensitive populations. If the outdoor cat isn’t neutered, that makes it ten times worse.
I think the welfare of the cat is the overriding factor. The wildlife thing might be overblown but outdoor cats face all sort of issues (accidents, disease, fights, abuse) and the owner isn't there to look after them.
I had to keep my cat indoors for several months after a surgery and he got severely depressed, even despite me spending all my free time trying to play with him and even taking time off work to look after him properly.
Then when he was finally allowed outside again he completely changed basically overnight and was so incredibly happy and playful.
I would take a slightly increased risk of them going outdoors rather than keeping them "safe" but with a lower quality of lifem
how did ther maker know 'aurafarming' but not 'mogging'
