Daily iron supplementation not a great idea unless you are a non-menopausal adult woman

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 31 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Even then, most people don't need it. The human body has NO mechanism to get rid of excess iron. It will poison you

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Unless they are vegetarian/vegan or don't eat much iron foods.

Probably because of my diet. (I'm not vegetarian or vegan but I don't eat much meat).

I don't take a supplement every day but I do take it a few times a month.

That's probably sufficient for me.

Donating blood is linked to overall health and longevity. One leading theory is the removal of heavy metals and plastics from the bloodstream.

Bloodletting :p

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Well I am exactly that!

Antipsychotics can really help if you need them, but Jesus Christ no they do not make you feel good. Most of them make you feel dead inside, just completely fucking numb to life. That can be better than without, but they are not a cure. They're a treatment for a symptom, with serious side effects.

Sometimes those side effects can be permanent too, like eyes and tongue moving around without you wanting them to.

I feel like a joke was intended here...;

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 1 points 1 week ago

I'm on a mood stabilizer and it makes me feel like a fucking zombie. Better than constant depression cycling, I guess

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure this has the wholesome meaning originally perceived by OP.

Weed does improve life quality when everything else is in a good condition

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago (2 children)

antipsychotics do not feel good

whoever posted this has never been on those drugs

also, u shouldn't take iron if you don't have a deficiency. it's a pretty bad idea actually

[–] blarghly@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Might be aimed at women. Most women who have periods are iron deficient due to blood loss during their periods, and most of the difference between mens and womens multivitamins is extra iron for this reason. But also, you can just eat some red meat or spinach

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 2 points 6 days ago

that doesn't explain the antipsychotics

women that don't have periods shouldn't be taking iron without blood testing either

[–] KullumDaue@lemmy.world -1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

u shouldn't take iron if you don't have a deficiency. it's a pretty bad idea actually

is the source your arse?

it is fine to consume iron rich foods when you don't have an iron deficiency. iron supplements don't really work most of the time, except the iv one, that fucker works just fine.

you want to raise your hemoglobin? eat liver (cooked of course).

[–] kuiskaaja@lemmy.ml 1 points 6 days ago

the source is my doctor.

[–] femmylemmy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I used to take iron supplements because I was worried about not getting enough iron. I had routine blood work and the doctor said my iron was too high and to stop the supplements. This also happened to my sister and seems to be a fairly common issue.

https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Iron%20-HealthProfessional/#h21

More info here about high iron levels.

[–] KullumDaue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

how much did you used to take in iron supplements? in mg/day.

several members of my family have a history of anemia, and supplements never worked that well for us (supplements are prescribed at 100mg pill once daily). the best thing we can do, is eat liver once a week or twice a month.

the page you linked to seems to be more about poisoning from supplements (it talks about consuming 4000+mg of iron supplements at once) and hereditary iron irregularity than it is about high iron level. also it states that excessive iron buildup from diet alone is not common.

of course don't take supplements unless prescribed, but don't shy away from iron rich food (unless told by you doctor).

Life flexing is for Facebook. We're all depressed here.

[–] compostgoblin@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Nuh uh! I’m anxious too.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Anxious but not depressed gang here. Everything is awesome and I love where I am in life and everything around me… but also something is constantly wrong and makes me uncomfortable but it’s never evident what it actually is WOOOO!

[–] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Oh hi Generalized Anxiety! 🍻

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 week ago

Ah, fantasy.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Damn had me until anti psychotic medicine...I too need the rest.

[–] StillAlive@piefed.world 5 points 1 week ago

Can't relate

[–] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mirtazapine instead of the antipsychotic, it’s an anti depressant that’s helped my sex drive mentally and physically. So happy I have it a try.

[–] Kojichan@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

How did it help your sex drive?

heck im good with stable necessary income. discretionary is gravy although nice. next walkable city and then sleep. maybe switch tose in importance. friends sure and exersise should happen practically naturally if I can walk everywhere including the library. no need for the drugs or supplements as eating right will cover it for me.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Well low-dose antipsychotics are a thing, too. I'm on them and I don't feel "bad" or anything. I can never tell if they are helping me or not tho, same as any other psych med I've tried. Only difference is that I have not had any behavioral dyscontrol at work since taking them. May or may not be related. I never know. At least I'm no longer being threatened to be terminated.
