As of a few minutes ago old.reddit.com now seems to requre logging in to access it.

Shame as it was still the best place to browse for info about some niche interests.

Edit: Seems like they might be testing the change as it is hit or miss at the moment.

Edit: Adding this to My flilters in uBlock Origin seems to fix the issue for the time being:

Reddit being absolutely horrendous is what moved me to this site. I wish there was more people and more prominent communities though.

[–] Frettchen@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago

More people means more people! Most of us didn't like people!

Honestly reddit went shit when everyone knew about it. You got mainstream shit that you could get on Facebook too. Don't wish for more people! This makes it more fun and you can keep up.

Reddit has some cool communities that don’t quite exist elsewhere, and even though I’ve found old-school forums for some of them, the vibe is different (usually older people who are often retired and can’t envision not having money or free time).

I used to pay a sub to Reddit but stopped back when they shafted Apollo. I wonder how things might have gone had Reddit focused on its community rather than the sad process of enshitificafion.

[–] Balldowern@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Good. I knew reddit was going down the tubes when they stopped API access to 3rd parties.

Let it burn down.

[–] fake@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Happened weeks ago for me. I begrudgingly made a throwaway account with a throwaway email.

Then they slapped me with age verification as well.

Fuck 'em.

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 13 hours ago

In five years my reddit account won't need verification since it's currently 13 years old!

But yeah there's a bunch of solid info and guides on there, niche subjects. I browse some niche subs sometimes but I refuse to interact, not even up or downvote. Sometimes someone asks a question and it hurts to not be about to post the answer, but I only actively use Lemmy and forums now.

[–] dropped_the_chief@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'm so happy they started doing this. They made me want to really start switching to Lemmy

[–] pollodehule@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah, same. I already had an account on Lemmy but kept going back occasionally. This really pushed me away completely.

[–] JensSpahnpasta@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago

Yeah, kind of. I refuse to login and notice how often I still klick on Reddit. That is like a cold shower, but cures the muscle memory.

They probably are tightening down to try and slow AI scraper bots.

Either way, I've mostly given up Reddit for Lemmy anyway. I looked the other day and realized I haven't even commented on Reddit in 4 months.

[–] TIEPilot@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

I found something interesting when I check a few hours ago. I was logged out to set the stage. I goto the main page it works. I use the search bar to find a sub and it works. But all the links on that subs page to related subs direct you to the "You have to log in"

So I was like, hmm what if I type one of these links into the search bar and see if I can get the link that way? It worked I could access the link that previous required a log in

I'm sure they will close that loophole and reddit will continue its decline...

[–] UselessAsshole@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

ENJOYING THIS REDDIT DOWNFALL? CONTINUE ON THE APP! Or else...

Which is why I’m reading this here and not on Reddit

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

They really love to punish any human left with any sort of connection to them. Luckily I already wiped them from ddg 😁. fuck spez

[–] TechSquidTV@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (5 children)

I'm sick of reddit. I've been banned three times for calling out Nazis. Nazis don't get banned though

[–] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

I got banned from r/SF for deleting all my comments besides the ones mentioning that I'm moving to Lemmy. The ban was over one year after my last time commenting on Reddit too.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Same. I said "fuck republicans" and got 'permanently suspended'... which is just the dumbest thing in itself

I discovered Lemmy last week. Lurked for a while, then finally created an account. The experience is much better than Reddit so I say good riddance.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago

Some tips:

  • We do have some trolls, we're getting more popular. If you feel like someone is picking on you, those are them.
  • Active is the default, but can seem less active because the active posts stay up longer. I made my default Hot, but then I check Active and Top 6 Hours.
  • You're probably going to go through a withdrawel. It varies by person, but mine took about a week or two.

Welcome.

https://redlib.catsarch.com/ <- this works for me but, like most comments are saying, reddit became a stinkhole of bots, agendas and stealth advertising. it kinda makes me sick to go there nowadays.

[–] corey931@lemmy.wtf 22 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Fuck ‘em. We’re here anyway

While I’ve been on Lemmy for a while, I haven’t really seen any hobby - centric or geek centric areas.

I’ll miss the movie threads in particular, but there were a ton of active crafts, art & ttrpg threads to get inspiration from. Any suggestions?

[–] Allero@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Some off the top of my head:

!movies@lemmy.ml

!movies@lemmy.world

!Art_Alchemist_Guild@lemmy.today

!Dullsters@dullsters.net

!battlemaps@lemmy.world

!boardgames@sopuli.xyz

!rpgmemes@ttrpg.network

There are certainly more! Tell me your particular interests, and it's very likely they have communities too. Anything from anime to documentaries, from woodworking and knitting to cast iron, and from D&D to Pathfinder!

Sadly millions absolutely do.

[–] eggpl4nt@lemmy.world 37 points 2 days ago (8 children)

This news finally convinced me to make a Lemmy account so I can participate a little more instead of lurk. That, and generally how awful Reddit has been becoming for like, several years at this point, since the IPO.

I've swapped out RedReader on my phone's home screen with Boost; though I think it'll take some time to break the Reddit addiction.

I am looking forward to seeing Lemmy's growth!

[–] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I was addicted to reddit. They killed the Reddit is Fun app that I used every day for 10 years, so I had to switch to Lemmy. It was the best thing that happened to me. It took me a few days to stop missing reddit but I am so much happier with Lemmy and never want to go back there again.

[–] ludo@feddit.nu 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I have a similar story, but in response to their action against RIF, i just started lurking old.reddit without an account (as matter of principle, I stopped using my account). Now I've finally made the switch, but am having trouble navigating here. What are your fav communities on lemmy, if I may ask? Honestly quite happy that they removed my access to reddit, as now I can participate in dedicated forums like in the internet of old, before the massive internet hubs AKA reddit, insta, fb etc :)

[–] lemmygarden@lemmy.today 1 points 15 hours ago

for my subscribed communities, I tend to subscribe to smaller communities that don't make it on "All"

https://lemmyverse.net/communities is one way to browse communities in the fediverse.

Reddit is unusable without old reddit. Reddit.com is a horrible user experience.

[–] fake@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

Was only a matter of time before they out-digg'd digg.

Reddit thinks they're an exclusivity club nowadays. Love that mentality for them, just a platform full of bots, misinformation purposed for political polarization.

They wouldn't even let me delete my account last week, "errors occured" so I just uninstalled. Good riddance.

[–] Samsy@lemmy.ml 65 points 2 days ago (11 children)

Welcome to Lemmy for the last reddit users, that used old.reddit, looks like we are complete now. The rest of reddit are noobs and bots.
