From xcancel:

The team behind uAssets, the filter lists used by uBlock Origin, says it will stop fixing ad-blocking issues on Facebook. They say Facebook keeps finding ways around new fixes, making the work increasingly difficult to sustain.

This won’t affect AdGuard’s Facebook filters. We maintain our own rules and will continue updating them.

There’s nothing to celebrate here. It shows how hard it is for small, often volunteer-run teams to keep up with tech giants — and how important their work is for everyone who wants more control over what they see online

uBlock Origin offers some AdGuard rule sets, so I don't know exactly what this means for existing uBO users.

That's very good wording from them. I was worried they were going to try and throw ublock under the bus, when really ublock has had a boot on it's neck from these big tech giants.

I'm very mixed. It's a small team, they do great work and keep the internet functional for a huge chunk of us, and they're burned out. It's a defeat. However no one who uses adblock should be using Facebook either, it's a garbage platform that is literally 97% ads. (I think I saw someone flipping through posts and only got to a "friend" post after going through like 30+ other garbage)

Sad and frustrating news.

Putting work into blocking any ads is phenomenal, and tackling Facebook as long as they did is heroic, full stop. I'm a little bummed that there seems to be no way to donate to the uAssets team.

I hate Facebook with a burning passion, but I believe it's important to keep blocking ads on it because

  • Philosophically, ad blockers aren't just for niche websites, they are supposed to be general-purpose content blockers for literally everybody, which is part of the purpose of web browsers: to be a user agent. (I saw a lot of people use this point back when Google was contemplating implementing Manifest V3, which ultimately prevented as users from using a browser the way they chose)
  • I bet a lot of people who use content blockers are not nearly as invested in privacy technology as us, which is perfectly fine, especially if it provides a gateway into being more aware.
  • The more normalized content blocking is (e.g. if it's even for Facebook boomers who don't care about privacy), the harder it is for it to be written off as some niche activity.

If you ask me for help with your computer, whether you're my mother, mother in law, or uncle, if I had to open your browser at some point then I'm gonna install uBlock Origin. It's unfortunately the price you have to pay for my help.

What I'm getting at is I've installed it on many people's computers even if they are regular Facebook users.

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 8 points 2 weeks ago

Fair, I do the same

[-] SteevyT@beehaw.org 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I somehow managed to install ublock on my work computer.

[-] DdCno1@beehaw.org 7 points 1 week ago

I've worked for an org where Firefox with uBlock Origin were standard for everyone. They knew what they were doing.

[-] Dave 3 points 1 week ago

I have too (uBlock Origin)! On chrome as I'm not allowed Firefox. But when I flick through the chrome store, almost all extensions are blocked. It's like it was a deliberate decision to let us have it, which is considering the maturity of the organisation in other ways.

[-] TehPers@beehaw.org 16 points 2 weeks ago

You can block Facebook ads by blocking the Facebook domains. This is what I do, anyway.

Even if you get through the ads, there's nothing of value there. At best, you're maintaining superficial relationships while wading through AI slop and ragebait. If you haven't actually talked to the person in years, consider whether there's even a real connection there or if you're just inflating each other's egos by pressing a like button every couple weeks.

[-] Powderhorn@beehaw.org 6 points 2 weeks ago

I think some of us remember MySpace days, when you reconnected with old friends and quickly remembered why you're no longer friends. For my cohort, Facebook solved a solved problem. Once I got anything other than from friends, I bounced. Haven't talked to a few since, but if that's their bag, more power to them.

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

But, but, but they need us moving as one, unified herd, though... Think of the shareholders!

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 11 points 2 weeks ago

yeah it’s probably a lotta work for a platform that is, i’d imagine, fairly unpopular for the crowd that actually uses ublock.

[-] XLE@piefed.social 10 points 2 weeks ago

Facebook users are the parents, aunts, uncles, and technologically illiterate friends of uBO users :)

[-] Sina@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago

I'd imagine the opposite. Facebook is just difficult to skip for most of us. As much as I hate it, I need Marketplace and Groups..

[-] turdburglar@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

need is a word.

i don’t know you, but i challenge that assessment.

When I used Facebook I would use this GreasyFork script with the ViolentMonkey extension. That's about as close as I ever got to a "clean" Facebook experience. I think it works because it doesn't rely on DNS or domains, but rather the "sponsored" tag in elements, which they can't legally remove. But I'm not a programmer so feel free to review the code and correct me.

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 week ago

Ah, yes. The ol' forks FTW! 🤘🏼

[-] Valmond@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 2 weeks ago

What's facebook?

Just get off the platform!

[-] Damage@feddit.it 8 points 2 weeks ago

I mean, if nowadays you're still on Facebook, you deserve whatever you get

[-] rozodru@piefed.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

honestly no excuse to be on it. I remember years and years ago when I left FB people kept saying "how will you stay in touch with your parents? family? etc" and i'm like "uh I have this device called a phone. ya see I input 10 numbers into it and it allows me to talk to my parents and family whenever I want. there's also this new fangled thing called email."

Plus my Mom is the only person I know that still uses it. My Dad was never into it and I have easier time rolling into the IRC chat rooms he frequents to get in touch than anything else. which usually means logging into a Slackware IRC room or the TechTV room he made hoping other former TechTV viewers will show up. but that's a story for another time.

[-] XLE@piefed.social 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I disagree with this thought process for all the reasons I listed above. I don't like Facebook, but I have friends who either appreciate it or need it for things like work.

But even if you consider all Facebook users to be an acceptable casualty, this blocking won't stop on Facebook. If it works, why would anti-adblock developers confine a lucrative success to one site?

Edit: dialed down my opinion of Facebook because Beehaw

Unfortunately it's literally the only place my local bike shop posts their group ride information.

[-] its_me_xiphos@beehaw.org 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Is there a way around this? Local events near me only post there. Drives me insane and I refuse to get a Facebook account just so I know where the writers group wants to grab coffee.

An archive work around, some crawler, anything I'm not aware of?

[-] SteevyT@beehaw.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

None that I've found so far.

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

if you posses the vast cosmic power of not having crippling social anxiety, you should contact them and beg them to make the information available literally anywhere else as well.

[-] its_me_xiphos@beehaw.org 1 points 1 week ago

I have. Usually I am a voice of 1 and they ignore it. I have a new member meeting at the Writer's Society next month and plan to bring it up there.

[-] Damage@feddit.it 0 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah I guess it's worth it to support the destruction of democracy worldwide if you don't want to miss a bike ride

[-] SteevyT@beehaw.org 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I mean, if you'd rather I stop being involved in trying to get cars off the road even if the current solution isn't perfect, I guess....

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 1 week ago

Don't be a shit. Them using FB to stay connected with their local community is far more effective against fascist, anti-humanity efforts than, say, recycling® ever was. 😅

Support Friendica to supplant Facebook!

[-] Manalith@midwest.social 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Genuine question, are there a good number of people using Friendica? I looked at it back in like 2017 or whenever Hak5 did a video about setting up Friendica servers, but it always seemed like Mastodon was the way to go, I know they aren't technically filling the same space, but still.

Edit: can't type on mobile

[-] Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago

unfortunately the problem is that "aren't technically filling the same space" is a big understatement, they're further apart than lemmy and mastodon are and i highly doubt anyone here would consider moving to mastodon even remotely sensible, they're just utterly different structures.

[-] Manalith@midwest.social 1 points 1 week ago

Maybe it's an issue of perspective. I see them as replacements for Twitter and Facebook and for me specifically I was posting the same things on both, its just that I had some people exclusively on one or the other, so when deciding to cut things, it made sense for me to only setup one given not many people I was communicating with were using either Mastodon or Friendica. I guess the core issue is either I've never really been using social media properly, or I just don't know what the core usecase/structure for Friendica/Facebook actually is.

AdGuard Pro is worth the cost.

$11 USD, the license covers up to 9 devices.

Website seems kinda sus (via Reddit)

My experience with StackSocial is mixed. Yes, I did buy MS Office Professional 2021 from them, and successfully downloaded the software, and the product key worked for me. The software functions as expected. However, I started getting massive amounts of spam, mostly from east European countries, in my inbox. I had to block the spam country codes on my email provider's webpage (Yahoo) and route the email from Stack Social, which they send out multiple times per day, to my Junk folder automatically. It took a while to get rid of most of the spam. I still get an odd one here and there after 2 years.

I'd take the deal if I knew it was basically a donation towards whoever's maintaining the filters, I'm just not sure about where that cash is going.

And in a case like this I'd want to use a disposable email address and disposable card for the actual purchase. Which I have (hooray) but most people may not

Let me recommend phice, a lightweight privacy-friendly alternative front-end for Facebook.

[-] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago

Even more lightweight and arguably even more privacy-friendly is not using Facebook at all. 🤘🏼

[-] Eternal192@anarchist.nexus 2 points 2 weeks ago

I barely even use Shitbook anymore so i won't hold it against them if they abandon it entirely.

Everyone still on Crapbook deserve all the shit they are serving on that brainrot platform.

I wish all my friends would delete their accounts en mass.
