Never do business with Netflix. If you have a TV series that you would actually like to have a conclusion, a video game studio you would like to produce at least 2 fucking games before you're all fired, then don't do business with Netflix. Just don't. I'm struggling to have much sympathy for creatives who get fucked like this by Netflix, because they've shown us through hundreds of examples over the years that getting fucked is the most likely outcome. It's like playing Russian roulette with your life's work just because one of the chambered rounds is actually a little flag with "JACKPOT" written on it that will pop out instead of a life-ending bullet, but the other 5 chambers all have a live round in them.

Game studios should stop selling out to giant corporations.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Developing a game is a long time without income. There's also not much reason to pay for a game after it comes out so it's a trade off.

That’s what debt is for. Risk it for the biscuit.

Ah, yes, the billions that "qualify" for such a loan. The mind reels.

Make a bad game? Unemployment.

Make a great game? Also unemployment.

What's the fucking point to any of this.

[–] onlinepersona@programming.dev 4 points 6 hours ago

Make no game? You guessed it!

Shareholders returns mostly.

Maybe, one of these days, it'll be the guillotines' return, mostly.

I fucking hate business majors, get them the hell out of video game development.

You can't run a videogame company if you think like a business suit.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 47 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly get them the hell out of society altogether

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago

They're hopeful dingleberries clinging to oligarchy's pustulent ass.

What truly ruined creative work is the involvement of finance/business bros.

Everyone is hiring these fuckwits to extract every last drop of profit from everything they can, instead of being happy with spending money to make money...

One of the most difficult skills you have to learn as an artist is when to stop extracting, when to stop squeezing, when to let go and let something grow into a living thing far bigger than you.

Business majors and finance people are monomaniacally obsessed with extracting and squeezing until they smash their environment into a brickwall, at which point their job begins and they can scoop up valuable debris from the resulting calamity for cheap.

Hunh. Sounds a lot like Disney acquiring certain talent on the tail of WWII. 🤔 How very curious.

Scum of the Earth.

Business Idiots. It's a pervasive problem. The people making decisions are not the people doing labor. They're often so far removed from normal life, that they can't even relate to regular humans anymore. How is some asshole with a full time personal assistant and high six figure salary supposed to relate to someone making median income and renting with 2 housemates?

Fuck 'em. Labor should take back what it built.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 5 points 17 hours ago

You can if all you want to do is make money. They've been doing it for decades, whether we like the end result or not.

What a shame - Netflix have given up on doing anything at all imaginative, and have fallen back on making Harry Potter and FIFA games, chucking everyone else to the wolves.

In some ways, having someone with a head for business would appear to make sense for a gaming studio. You could look at most of the announcements from eg. Obsidian or Double Fine on their intention to make 'Scope Creep: The Video Game', guaranteed to release massively over-budget to critical success but modest sales which will put the studio into a lot of trouble; and think that someone holding the purse strings, keeping the creatives from their worst excesses, and vetoing any really stupid ideas would be a clever idea. Unfortunately, this role always seems to go to dumb-arse dipshits without a single thought in their heads.

Would appear that an Indie Studio of three people might be ideal - Suspicious Developments, Team Cherry, Cuzzillo/Boch/Foddy have put out some great stuff recently. Small enough to stay focussed, and also small enough to put in a few years of polish without running up crazy bills. Seems like Night School, being four people, was just a bit too big.

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 6 hours ago

Similar to the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, IIRC.

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 15 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I had no idea Night School was acquired by Netflix. I love their games. They deserve better.

[–] Ashtear@piefed.social 3 points 6 hours ago

Yeah, this one hurts. Oxenfree's one of the indie classics.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 28 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks for making us money! Now back in your fucking hole slaves!

[–] wyldrstallyns@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 6 hours ago

They get fucking hole slaves?!
