The older I get, the more it becomes apparent that the primary political distinction between people is how many degrees of separation from themselves they care about people. The more you care about people barely connected to you at all, the more progressive you are. The more your scope of concern for people is limited to people in your immediately sphere, the more conservative you are.
It is not always selfishness that sways conservatives. They can care genuinely and deeply for their family, friends, colleagues, and community. But that is typically as far as that scope of concern goes. They can take on more progressive political positions or make limited exceptions when their lifelong regressive politics suddenly negatively affects themselves or those close to them. Their kid comes out as trans, their work friend is black, their community is being spoiled by a corporation, and suddenly they are a progressive ally on those things alone. But what they care about will still be limited to those in their bubble. They will not care that their politics has the same effect on someone else's family until it happens to their's. It's a genuine character flaw. They are incapable of general altruism.
Unfortunately, that it's such a widespread characteristic means society can only maintain progressive institutions by figuring out a way to protect them from being considered "enemy other" by people like that. There are selfish reasons to support safety nets - treating infectious diseases in poor communities prevents transmission to wealthier communities, for example - but those reasons haven't been sold in a way to gain traction with today's conservatives.

Thats true to varying extents for virtually everyone.
When you're broke and can't afford to take a week off of work because it could mean ending up homeless you're a lot less likely to go spend a lot of time protesting an innocent stranger being shot dead in the street than if that innocent person had been your brother.
They only turn when they are personally affected in a big way.

Here are some approval ratings for context:
- Trump: 39.5%
- Merz: 14%
- Macron: 27%
- Starmer (just before resigning): 23%
Trump's lowest ever approval rating in RCP's average was 37% (Dec 2017), which was around the time it was revealed to the public Trump aided the Russian military in attacking US targets.
For context Germany (Merz) isnt a 2 Party-System. Basically we have 4 Major ones currently (afd, spd, cdu, green) and a few minor ones (left, left but pro russia, libs). With the major ones usually getting double digits % and the minor ones barely make it over 5% which is the baseline to participate in parliament. There are also very small parties listed as "misc" getting 10-20 of votes but not participating in parliament. Imo this 5% barrier and ignoring 20% of votes is a problem.
Anyhow, if the votes concluded its normal that multiple parties form alliances and agree which policies they want to implement to get over the 50% threshold. Mostly dropping anything the voters wanted and implementing stuff rich people want under the blanket of "finding compromises".
While 14% is really bad it's also just harder to get everyone behind you in such a plural political scene. Also Merz said stuff to insult about any worker. But the policies are particularly bad for workers yet the (self attributed) workers party SPD agreed to these policies. So Merz is problematic but it's 2 whole parties that are problematic and outright lie during elections.

Sure, that's true. Angela Merkel's approval rating, however, reached as high as 77%.
Imo this 5% barrier and ignoring 20% of votes is a problem.
I am also not a fan of the 5% threshold. If, as opinion polls now suggest could be a real possibility, the AfD manages to gain an absolute majority with less than 50% of the vote in Saxony-Anhalt, it will be more than a problem but a full-fledged constitutional crisis.

Browsing around different forums, I have read some of what they think, and they legitimately believe that he as accomplished a lot by "protecting the culture" and deporting immigrants. But there's a lot of complaining about everything else and general dissatisfaction from what I can tell.
Basically they are racists and they are glad about the racist things he's accomplished.

He was allllll fine with fuck the immigrants, fuck the brown people, fuck everyone else, but finally Trump did something that hurt his personal little feefees and now he's upset and surprised that Trump would do whatever it was, but he'll get over it and vote for him or whoever he annoints or whoever the Republicans put out there.
Fuck these people. I gave excuses to these fuckers for decades and I'm out of excuses for them. They are traitors to our democracy and voted in fascism time and time again. No sympathy for traitors. They have collectively killed millions of Americans, and at least millions of others around the world if not hundreds of millions by their actions.
The issue is that their empathy, like most people's in history, extends to their immediate circle and no further. Once he became affected, he realized Trump doesnt care. Everything else was a victory in the name of GuyWhoHasntWrongedHimSpecifically because He said so

This is easy to fake, but I think it is happening. They're spamming Truth Social with bots to drown out the dissent now. That's not good for them.
It might be more about the dissent rising in the right-wing media ecosystem than people waking up ontheir own, but the dissent in the right-wing media system may be driven by falling viewership, so maybe it's the whole thing collapsing in unison. Last poll I saw had him down to 33% now.

I remember reading a modern Captain America comic set in the WW2 era. The Red Skull, Hitler's top agent, is planning his escape from the inevitable fall of the Nazi regime. The Skull blames Hitler personally, but is still 100% committed to the cause. The Skull has enough gold to live like a king forever, but he's planning on using it to start the next Reich.
