Marine Le Pen wants to halt military and financial aid to Ukraine should she come to power. Édouard Philippe has stated that this would play into Russia’s hands.

It's do fucking infuriating that the general public isn't aware about this. It's almost like (at least here in France) the rich and powerful prefer the far right - right to go to the end election (the 2 biggest go to a second turn, and everyone prefers "not the extremist party", giving a free win to the other).

Before you all say the rich and powerful prefer the extreme right, I don't think it's that clear cut here, they are well ok with the "classic right".

I also hope the extreme right here will split up, there is infighting because they close in to the absolute power.

Meloni so far has backed sending weapons to Ukraine and the sanctions on Russia. She's still far-right but I don't think she is as bad as Le Pen for example.

I don't know what "economic basics" you're saying "the left" (which is ambiguous at best) don't understand, but I want you to keep in mind that you probably don't understand economic reality. Economic basics are just that; they're basics and a starting point to a stronger understanding. Even economists disagree about many basic interpretations, because it's a complex field.

I will say once believed Keynesian economics was the smartest thing, and it does make some sense, but it doesn't really touch what matters for most people. It's focused on some broad "economy," and the value in it. It's not as focused on if people can afford houses and food. It doesn't really care if one person makes a trillion dollars or if a trillion people make one dollar (except that it's more likely to be spent again, rather than saved, if the trillion people have it).

I used to think I was so smart and understood everything. I then realized how full I was of myself, and tried to understand how my understanding may be wrong. I don't hold the same beliefs I do about economics that I used to, and I'm smarter for it, though less sure of myself. My economic understanding is pretty far to the left now, so make of that what you will. If that means I don't know "economic basics" anymore, then so be it.

Whenever I hear an argument about "basics" it bothers me. Your high school education on "basic biology" doesn't teach you the reality about sex, let alone gender. Your high school education on "basic economics" doesn't teach you the reality of how economies affect people.

I don't know anything about the topic, or what France's interest payments are like, but the topic isn't as out there as it implies. Many of the people critical of it were just in favor of it a few years ago. I also have no idea how serious the candidate is about this. Is it just something they mentioned off the cuff sometime? Also, as far as I'm aware, this is not really a leftist position. This is the position of one particular candidate. This seems to be the main point; it's to get people discussing it:

For Mélenchon and his allies, whether or not his proposal flies is perhaps not the main issue. He has succeeded in putting fiscal orthodoxy itself up for debate.

"We are very happy there is a controversy on debt," said Antoine Léaument, a member of France's National Assembly with France Unbowed, on the sidelines of the rally.

It was a narrative about perception of yourself. If you think you're too smart to be wrong then you're probably wrong. The only possible way to be right continuously is to enter everything with an open mind, and a willingness to change when proven wrong. Assuming everyone not agreeing with you is an idiot is only going to ensure you can't understand what they're discussing.
