I typically go with single player games. Niche stuff casuals rarely play. It's not a flex or anything, I just a "distinct" taste in gaming

I've had several girlfriends who were like "you play video games? Like... call of duty?"

They were all relieved when I was like no.

Less relieved when I got them to play cuphead co-op.

I'm not a COD guy, I prefer battlefield.

I always included my partners into playing it with me. Either taking turns or, as my partner for life, has come to love. Minimap watcher!

She calls out whatever is on the radar. Saved my ass so many times. I know it has to have made somebody mad, cause there's times when she notices someone on the minimal and tells me turn around or something, and I end up getting em.

Thank you. It really is. It started in bf1. I am colorblind (can't remember which) but bf1 blended together for me a lot. Made it harder to see folks. She came in clutch more than I can count.

She's the reason I have, I think 3 of the 4 horsemen dog tags.

And she's great overwatch when I am flying heli with my buddy Squash on bf6. She can spot an enemy heli the moment it comes out. Where as I am basically blind because of my sight.

And she's even gotten better at playing herself. Especially since we've worked on our communication skills and I have learned not to be so "harsh" sounding when she messes up a firefight and gets vented. And she's learned that I'm not trying to be mean, but get the point across that you gotta stay calm under fire.

Something I love about her is that she'll admit when she's wrong, even when I am the bigger asshole. She can sit there look me in the eyes and say "how you acted wasn't right, but I can see how I was acting made you act that way."

To be acknowledged, to be seen as human, to be loved even when flawed. I wouldn't trade it for the universe.

I'll never be able to pay this woman back for the love she has given me and the support she has shown me. I'll shutup now, as I could just go on about my partner.

I go to the same barbershop every two month or so, but not always tge same barber. Every now and then i get a guy around my age who is pretty chatty, but we have literally nothing i. Common. So every time he remembers that i play video games, because he also plays video games. But for now a decade or so, his answer is always: fifa and cod and gta, when the new one came out. He has literally no idea what i'm talking about when i name some games i play. "Video games" to him is synonymous for fifa and call of duty. So we still have nothing in common

[-] RustySharp@programming.dev 22 points 6 days ago

Yes, but at least soon he'll have another GTA to discuss with you!

[-] FatVegan@leminal.space 9 points 6 days ago

Can't wait since i won't play it.

[-] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 4 points 5 days ago

Depending on how you gauge him, maybe you're his opportunity to discover a vast fun world of indie games? At the very least, if you're tired of him talking your ear off about Ball and Gun, you could at least talk his ear off about Expedition 33. Yapping as a defense mechanism.

[-] creamfresh@lemmy.world 43 points 6 days ago

Niche stuff casuals rarely play.

that's the kind of gatekeeping I'd like to avoid in my hobby

[-] sukhmel@programming.dev 11 points 6 days ago

A lot of that ‘niche’ stuff may also be what ‘casuals’ do play

[-] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 7 points 5 days ago

Yeah like so many of the single dev indie games I've played have been extremely casual—that's why I play them!

I read it more as what the sentence actually says than gatekeeping tbh

And then I go "Hey what if you could play CoD from the perspective of the psychopathic senior officers whose orders make all this violence happen?"

"Rimworld, what's that?"

"Its like the Sims on a hostile alien planet with robots and cannibalism"

"Cannibalism?!"

"Yea... Usually not intentionally. I mean no one sets to eat their friends or even their enemies but after a few lean seasons and you have run out of pets... But it's not like you let them go to waste, you can use the leather too.

... (Doesn't notice them pulling away)

Human leather is actually kind of a premium value product....". "Hey where'd you go?!"

I play the wikipedia game. Start on a random article, click the first link over and over until you reach philosophy. How many clicks did it take? try and beat that

ITT: OP says he’s niche… refuses to elaborate.

[-] vole@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

OP plays NBA 2K.

Give us names here. This is what it's like when normies ask me what music I listen to.

[-] megopie@beehaw.org 6 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

When people ask me about music I just say “I don’t really listen to much music”

I know they’re trying to develop a conception or me, I recognize that they’re trying to get an idea of who I am, trying to start a conversation but I also know they will not draw any meaningful information from the answers I could give. Not because what i like is “too sophisticated and they just wouldn’t get it” but because my taste is completely incoherent. My taste is obscure and trash, and each listened facet is tonally dissonant from the last.

What it’s like is the person saying they like all music but not that music.

[-] flameleaf@lemmy.ml 10 points 5 days ago

old games, indie games, games with the graphics settings turned all the way down

What's the polar opposite of AAA?

[-] Sektor@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

What's the polar opposite of AAA

Submarine sims, 4X, point and click, euro jank, everything older than 2020, everything single player.

[-] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago

My video game habits closely match my music taste: everything except new pop country and mumble rap (coming around on Migos, though). Ill play any game that isnt an FPS or third person open world.

Duck game, gunfire reborn, witcher 3, random meme games

[-] Dalvoron@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

I got big into tidy-em-ups the last month or two. Just unfortunate that the scene is full of slop knock-offs of Librarian at the moment

[-] RedAle@feddit.dk 8 points 5 days ago

I read that as tiddy-em-ups and thought it was some new genre of gooner game.

Word.

Probably 95+% of the time I play is Single player.

I also dislike competitive gameplay, so with that most of the PvP goes into drain for me 😃

I play the Sakura series and everything from my favorite publisher Kagura Games.

Don't ask why I have so many boxes of tissues. They're uh....really sad and emotional games.

So many a year ago, I would tell people I was a gamer, and they all assumed video games when I meant role-playing games. Made me a touch upset. Now I see this happening in video game culture too, and I just have a smile of justification while sitting in my room of unread ttrpg books.

[-] helix@feddit.org 9 points 6 days ago

Since you didn't mention those games by name: do you play them with one hand, perchance? 🤪

[-] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

No one asks.

I only play old games.

Whenever someone asks, they are usually a decade ahead of me.
