This could have been Omegle if society wasn't sick. 😔

[-] janus2@lemmy.zip 3 points 21 hours ago

I've learned that "you should write a blog about this!" is a polite way people try to tell me I'm being overwhelming lol

[-] rumba@lemmy.zip 19 points 1 day ago

I believe the proper vehicle would be a forum.

The real problem is the dumper isn't always as structured as the dumpee requires. Most Exciting/Interesting in First out is one hell of a pipeline.

My wife has banned me from mentioning the following topics when we meet new people:

  • DARK (Netflix)
  • Julian May's 'Saga of Pliocene Exile' novels
  • Cold War submarine types
[-] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

I’m not familiar with the first two but Cold War submarines! Hell yes!

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Go watch DARK. Do not pass go. Turn off your phone. Watch it in the original German with subtitles. Focus and take lots of notes re who is related to who. Consider buying a whiteboard for Seasons 2 and 3. Remember that every single scene, every line of dialogue, is vital to the plot.

[-] IamMoonPie@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

You had me at “go buy a white board”!

[-] Spezi@feddit.org 8 points 1 day ago

My priest mentioned that I’m 3D printing in her sermon during my wedding…

[-] volvoxvsmarla@sopuli.xyz 2 points 23 hours ago

If you want to talk a monologue about dark, I'm here to listen

Thank you! I've been trying to spot potential plot errors (obvs. only potential!) and may have spotted three, two of them in S1E1 and one in S3E3.

Firstly, who is transiting the tunnel when the kids are outside the cave? It can't be the Jonas who takes Mikkel through to 1986 because it would take him too long to get from the door to the tunnel mouth. The only other candidates are Helge and Noah, but what would they be doing there at that time?

Secondly, although the kids' flashlights glitch, the lights in the school do not. This seems the only time where a traveller transiting the tunnel doesn't cause a widespread power outage.

Turning to S3E3, when Martha takes Stranger Jonas to the woods to show him her time machine and give him her alleged final phial of caesium. Why, oh why, doesn't Jonas just use her machine to transport everyone back to 2019? Why bother using the caesium to create a steampunk time machine when Jonas has a fully functional one in front of him?

I'm also fascinated by what happened when Alternate Egon travelled to rescue Hamnah as she's having her miscarriage during the apocalypse in Eva's world. We know Hannah has to givr birth to Egon's child (Silja) but surely she's not going to get into a relationship with a retired Egon! Perhaps he takes her to meet his younger self in the '50s - after getting her medical care - but it seems rather unlikely that Hannah would go along with Eva's plan.

All of the above are mere minor questions in what was an amazing show. I've been reliving it vicariously through YouTube reactions and have just finished watching 'The Chill Finn' aka Tiia complete the show. She thought it was the best thing she's ever seen, and her analysis and commentary were excellent. Now I need to find another YouTuber I've not watched yet, and they are fairly few and far between.

Dark was fabulous. Best twisted time travel show I've ever seen

[-] SippyCup@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

I would like to know more about cold war submarines

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Sadly, I have chores. Old Tom Clancy novels are pretty accurate, but don't really talk about the UK boats, such as the Trafalgar class (SSN) and the Oberon diesel-electric boats. The worst thing Thatcher ever did was cancel the Submarine Commamd School (known as Perisher) as Captains from all over NATO used to attend. It was the one thing we were excellent at.

sounds like you need to start a community :)

Your wife is a saint. Worship her. Sing to her.

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I know. I do (mainly the DARK soundtrack but it still counts.)

Cold War submarine types

You ever seen the old Russian Foxtrot in San Diego?

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Sadly, I'm in the UK. The best we've got near me is a WWII A-class boat at Gosport.

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

That's still pretty cool. When I was in SONAR school I used to love sitting in the tech pub library reading all the old SONAR tech pubs going back to WWII.

[-] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh, I enjoyed visiting HMS Alliance but would love a look around an SSN or even a Type VII U-boat.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

I'm a scuba instructor, and one of our favorite books in the hobby is "Shadow Divers" by Robert Kurson.

It's the story of wreck divers in the 90s discovering a U-Boat off the coast of New Jersey that shouldn't have been there according to any records. They dove it over the course of several years and multiple people died trying to solve the mystery of the sub.

Worth a read.

My favourite is the Echo II because of the cool pop up angled launchers.

This should be the new education system. We'd fast track humanity tenfold.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 23 hours ago

"Today we're talking about all 147 types of military aircraft. At the end of the lesson, you'll be tested on your ability to identify them purely by the sound of their thrusters."

"Teacher? When will we be using this in real life?"

"That's an excellent question Jimmy. Now get in the Good Questions Oubliette and think about the answer on your own time."

[-] comrademiao@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

I’d like to think that’s what a proper PhD prior to the dissertation stage, after that you would just be memorizing not producing new research.

Why’re you posting your education manifesto on Quora?

[-] Tehdastehdas@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

Quora used to be cool. I haven't had the energy to move everything from there to a currently sensible place, because those don't have a working import function. Copy-paste breaks so much.

It was social media for intellectuals. Barack Obama wrote a few answers during his presidency. Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia founder) used to write there. Alan Kay (computer scientist from ARPA IPTO and Xerox PARC) still writes there.

In 2012, Quora's other co-founder was smoked out. The remaining co-founder-CEO, a libertarian techbro who doesn't use Quora, let smart people lead it until ~2017 when he started enshittifying it. Top writer promotion program ended. Real name policy ended. All answer wikis deleted without warning. Suggest edits function disabled. All community editing disabled, now stupid bots make a mess. Fired 99% of human moderation, bots fail at it, professional spammers moved in. Quora's own AI-generated slop answers on the top of everyone's feed. Every year the CEO does more damage.

I like it very much. Tho i would like to ask why you see objectivity as good whiile subjectivity is bad. And im not sure if "blames self for world" is really a good thing; seems like low self worth. And im missing the revolutionary character. Like martin luther king. Maybe something like "inspires others to change for good".

[-] manualoverride@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

”Connecting…” appears on the app, and then it hits you, that wave of self doubt about the subject you’ve been obsessing over for the last three years, and spent tens of thousands of hours researching… What if I connect to someone who knows more? A ‘super autist’ with a smidge of self doubt, I must learn more!

You connect as a hyperfixator:

That's what forums used to be

[-] Sirdubdee@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago

Remember remember that eternal September. Then web 2.0. Then facebook allows the parents in.

Now the enshitification goes full stream ahead.

I thought IRC and Geocities was a good time, even if I happened across dolphinlove.org.

[-] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 day ago

IRC is still a good time.

When i discovered it in 2006, i realized what it meant for a technology to mature so much as to almost be perfect at what it does.

Old OkCupid had keyword search for finding those people.

lmao at them leaving heterosexuality as the one exception to the sameness filtering.

If your profile says you're a sub, does it only match you with other subs? No doms?

[-] Tehdastehdas@piefed.social 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

To the question "Do you enjoy giving oral sex?", both must answer the same.

(The question "Preferred position: are you a top or a bottom?" seems to have been deleted.)

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 4 points 2 days ago

Wow, so now people who don't like giving blowjobs don't get any blowjobs? This is fucked up, dawg!

Day 100 of me mistaking this guy's tweets for Edward Snowden until after I read the tweet.

[-] cubeli@thelemmy.club 3 points 1 day ago

I knew the community this was posted before reading it

[-] erebion@news.erebion.eu 3 points 2 days ago

Where did you find that post?

Could you please add a link?

Especially if you do not add an image deacription that screen readers would be able to read, but also because I'd like to look at the source myself.

[-] Dyskolos@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago

This would be the end of me...my remaining lifetime would be put into that chat. Please don't, I still have many plans!

[-] jaybone@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

Sometimes I talk to my cat when I infodump.

[-] Djehngo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I got half a infodump the other day and now I kinda want to either learn to play deadlock or at least get the other half of the infodump

[-] cows_are_underrated@feddit.org 2 points 1 day ago

I can highly recommend learning deadlock. It has quite a learning curve (like other valve games), but it is still quite approachable. Its seriously one if the best games I have played in quite a while.
