Maybe, maybe not, but they are 100% right choosing to stop this clock changing nonsense.

Yeah, I'd like to see a comparison of switching to permanent DST and continuing with the twice-annual changes.

We have a century of data. Nowhere in Canada or globally should be continuing with the twice-annual changes.

I've lived my whole life in Saskatchewan on Daylight time. It's fine. Everyone else in Saskatchewan that I know is fine. The changing clocks is worse than staying on Daylight time.

[-] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 2 points 23 hours ago

Why settle for "fine" when it could be better?

[-] FlareHeart@lemmy.ca 2 points 15 hours ago

Why let perfect be the enemy of progress?

[-] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 hours ago

It's not. It's the same effort to pick one or the other. Choosing the worst one just because is stupid.

Yeah, exactly. Our marking of time is an arbitrary construct, so if you look for advantages at one end of the year for school or work, you'll have to adjust at the other end.

If China can operate under one singular BST zone, then people will adjust to this.

Well there was that one business guy who wrote an article in the paper twice a year about how Saskatchewan should adopt this stupid ritual of changing times, I always thought he would get his wish when the rest of Canada started to follow are lead. My aunt who owns a business told me once that she wished Saskatchewan would follow that ritual because it is always confusing when trying to schedule business meetings across Canada, this was after Yukon decided to stop with the silliness so I am not sure why she thought it wasn’t going to be a matter of time before the rest of Canada followed suit. Now what I wish for is that all of Canada followed one time zone, like the EU and China, sure from the east coast to the west coast we span about 25% of the globe but what is time really? Sure people would have to get used to, hopefully GMT and change of the idea of a 9 to 5 to something else depending on location, but people would get used to it.

Manitoba is on the eastern side of their timezone. They aren't getting hours of dark in the morning by doing this, they are getting sunlight at 5pm.

-"In the dead of winter, sunrise might not happen until close to 9 a.m., which means "young people who are going to school are going to have to do so in pure darkness," and that has potential health implications, Mak said.

The light people are exposed to in the morning stabilizes the body's circadian rhythm — the natural 24-hour internal clock that regulates sleep-wake cycles and other biological processes.

"[It] gives us better mood and better energy. So we're going to see an amplification of disturbed nighttime sleep, reduced total sleep time," said Mak, clinical vice-president of the Canadian Sleep Society."-

Its one friggin hour. So people are going to get so much morning sun if its perm st over dst. the only thing I see here is think of the children but you know society determines the start and stop time of the school day. Honsetly the whole thing is silly as we are the ones deciding when to get up and start things. rather than dst how about we just change our schedules when we want to.

I go to work AND go home from work in the dark in the winter even with the time change. If we stay on daylight time, I might actually see the sun after work.

Edit: I leave for work at 7:10 AM and I see all the neighbourhood kids already outside waiting for the school bus. So even with the time change they are going to school in the dark. Making it one hour earlier won’t make a difference.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

thats what I kind of mean. Its like fine we can do st but then make 8-4 the typical day or whatever. its like either way I prefer to have a bit of sun at some point.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Yes, was agreeing with you. Just give us a chance to see SOME daylight in the winter. And I don’t want sunrise at 3:00 AM in the summer.

[-] Auli@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

When I was in school we walked in the dark I winter. And come on no one is walking to school these days everyone gets driven.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

even if the argument has merit its like why change the clocks. set the school schedule for the shortest day of the year. I mean summer is no school or an alternative schedule anyway.

[-] Lemmyoutofhere@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

Big deal. Just means waking up an hour earlier in the winter and actually having some sunlight at the end of the day.

[-] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 1 points 23 hours ago

Right, why should we care about kids walking to school in darkness?

It's been shown time and time again that waking up later is better for learning and for health, and yet we keep forcing everyone to wake as early as possible because we associate sleeping with laziness.

[-] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

I know health experts mean well, but I had to make a meme about it:

Doctors telling people about how standard time is better but Western Canadians not listening

[-] nyan@lemmy.cafe 6 points 1 day ago

I wonder if those experts are familiar with the expression "the perfect is the enemy of the good."

[-] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 1 points 23 hours ago

We are and it's super annoying to see everyone shooting themselves in the foot because it's better than in the hand when they could just not.

[-] Reannlegge@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

I have lived in Saskatchewan my whole life time changes have affected me a whole whopping two times, both where because tech things thought I was in the Manitoba time zone and I thought I was an hour late for something when they fell back or sprange forward.

[-] rabber@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

There's now more daylight for winter camping. This is a total game changer to me

Where I live in BC, people literally stop camping the day the clocks go back
