That’s an interesting way of saying “stupid fucking military assholes just did what ChatGPT said to do without thinking and murdered 123 CHILDREN without even thinking.”

“AI” just said stuff, human beings pulled all the triggers. People did this.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 hours ago

In terms of child casualties, it’s the deadliest American military targeting error of the 21st century.

This should not be construed to say the United States has been mindful about not killing children.

I did a bit of research regarding the CIA drone-strike program in Afghanistan. It ran about five-hundred sorties a year. The approximate rate was fifty civilians killed for every person-of-interest. Drone operators called casualties bugsplats. They called children fun sized terrorists. This was the lingo in used in the operation. When reported to the press, dead people, men, women, children, all were reported as militants.

Drone-pilot burnout was epidemic in the program. It turns out soldiers get PTSD from killing people whether it's up close or thousands of miles away. And often the drone would lurk for a while, watching all these people eat, work, play, sleep, fuck (they had IR and could see into buildings), and would clearly understand these were just people living their lives when the order would come down to incinerate them.

And this wasn't under George W. Bush (who still wiped out villages, but used PMC raiders doing black ops) this was under Obama. The disposition matrix and the FISC decided whether a POI needed to be executed. They didn't consider the people that lived at the target site.

And that's just the Afghanistan program in the International War on Terror. There was also a Pakistan program.

The United States in its military operations has been really merciless, and at some point we need to collectively decide if we're okay with that, or are driven to change.

This keeps coming up.

"A COMPUTER CAN NEVER BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE THEREFORE A COMPUTER MUST NEVER MAKE A MANAGEMENT DECISION"

So the AI did not make a decision. The AI has no authority nor ability to launch missiles (yet). Someone, one or more human beings did, and I use the term loosely. Those humans took the information that was fed to them by an AI, failed to verify the accuracy of the information despite it being common knowledge that AIs frequently hallucinate and make stuff up, and then proceeded to launch the attack.

In summary, it wasn't the AI. One or more people took the advice of an AI and negligently murdered 123 little girls.

[-] rizzothesmall@sh.itjust.works 11 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

AI can only replicate what it has seen before, so fucking obviously it would blow up a bunch of kids you collection of bewilderingly in charge bonobos unconvincingly wearing suits.

[-] sqgl@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

Edgy.

The reality is that school used to be part of the military compound it is embedded in.

It is a war crime to locate a military facility near civilians.

Article 58 of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions

[-] jpreston2005@lemmy.world 31 points 10 hours ago

In the final days of February, the Trump ~~administration~~ demanded an overwhelming aerial assault. More than 1,000 Iranian targets were hit within the first 24 hours alone. That order compressed the time frame for finalizing targets, the officials said, instilling an urgency that — combined with gaps in underlying information about the site, cuts in civilian-protection personnel and an overreliance on artificial-intelligence technology — set the stage for the deadly error.

Ah so the head pedophile in charge demanded something unreasonable, so they cut all the corners they could and ended up killing 123 children. Super cool. This is AI's fault because....? That site had been operating as a school for a decade. They can't blame flawed intelligence, it was their own gross negligence and lack of review.

You remember how DOGE cut a bunch of government funding by random keyword searches? And they ended up banning super important research into using gene editing as a life-saving tool because the work was being done on transgenic mice? And they searched "trans" and then defunded it?

So this is like that, except instead of funding being cut, they murdered 123 children.

trump should rot in prison till he dies.

[-] Jarix@lemmy.world 9 points 8 hours ago

Criminal Negligence for everyone involved

[-] sqgl@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago

Including the Iranians who put the school there.

reporter: So simple human error?

Mike: Yes, exactly.

reporter: Which human?

Mike: Several, uh, separate humans.

“It was . . . the AI! The AI did it! Yeah! . . . that’s the ticket!”

[-] MadPsyentist 7 points 9 hours ago

This 100%.

The magic text generator didnt DO anything other than generate text. Dont pass your own critical thinking off to the digtal magic 8 ball and dont let anyone else pass their responsibility off to the digital magic 8 ball either.

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 100 points 15 hours ago

I was just following ~~orders~~ AI.

[-] BooBees@fedinsfw.app 36 points 14 hours ago

You’re absolutely correct! My bad, but you showed real initiative and creativity bucking the legacy system and blindly following a known flawed and hallucinatory system reliant on outdated information in order to perform military maneuvers with mass casualty level ordinances! Would you like me to write up a list of ways we can spin this as Joe Biden’s fault?

[-] FauxLiving@lemmy.world 8 points 9 hours ago

Yes, but make no mistakes and don't hallucinate anymore.

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 77 points 15 hours ago

The underlying problem is that nobody will ever be sent to the Hague for trial.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago

That wasn’t going to happen either way. We have to be our own Hague.

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

I see the US sending war criminal to the Hague the same way Colombians saw sending Escobar to the US, an admission they were incapable of delivering justice themselves.

It would also be a acknowledgement and commitment to international law in contras to issuing economic sanctions against ICC members because we don't like their decisions.

[-] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago

Yeah, but the US doesn’t recognize the ICC, so we’d have to start there.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 17 points 15 hours ago

"Problem"

As if this isn't an intended effect of using AI like this

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 28 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

The US has been bombing civilians with absolute impunity for decades. This has nothing to do with AI and everything to do with the United States' repeatedly demonstrated and absolute disregard for human life.

[-] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 43 points 15 hours ago

Hey look because of AI, piracy and murder is now legal and ok.

[-] CubitOom@infosec.pub 15 points 14 hours ago

Also generated child pornography

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 6 points 10 hours ago

Forced birthers cry about women having control over their own bodies but elect a guy that turned 123 children into little bits of charred flesh.

[-] Canajan@piefed.ca 6 points 10 hours ago

So Palantir / Peter theil don’t get any mention? They are ones supplying the system for the military no?

[-] answersplease77@lemmy.world 5 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Lies! It was not and cannot be AI:

1- Triple strike . 2- It was of the first attacks of the first day. 3- in an isolated city far from Tahran. 4- It was followed by bombing kids gymnasium,

AND reminder 5- The US original plan was to deliver decapitative strikes! It was meant to be few weeks and specific targets. So the girl school was a chosen target among the decapitative strikes of first day.

So they definately intentionally chose that target and had all the time to plan their sneak "decapitative" strikes which were done during negotations on the first hours of first day!
They wanted to hurt the IRGC commanders by slaughtering their daughters that way they create a shock and a motive for the commanders to stop following orders and choose to overthrow their government.

The same thing when they drowned 120 military graduate cadetes in an unarmed warship that just came out of a joint excersie thousands of miles away in the Indian sea where the US military also participated in! So 1- they knew it was unarmed, and knew these were graduate trainees. None of them were decision makers or high-value targets.

and 2- They wanted to kill them not only destroy their ship to degrade their government military capabilities and assets because they intentionally did not rescue any of them afterward.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 11 points 12 hours ago

Yes, had they done it the old fashioned way, they could have killed far more school children as per American policy.

[-] masterspace@lemmy.ca 17 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I suspect that everyone in here complaining about AI didn't actually read the article.

The article states that Palantir's Maven system was over-relied on, and compressed a process that would have taken months into one that took days, but it also points out that that Maven didn't actually make a mistake based on the way it was supposed to operate.

It sounds like some military personnel were mistaken in how much vetting and revetting maven itself would do, but the article also lays much of the blame at Hegseth's gutting of the civilian harm roles, and failures in intelligence vetting and gathering that fed into maven in the first place. Years ago US intelligence personnel had flagged that Minab had turned into a school, but that information was not in the database used by maven.

Like I have no doubt that Maven is part of the problem, but it sounds like it was far from the only part.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 10 points 12 hours ago

Hegseth wants to have AI to blame for his war crimes.

[-] Dryad@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago

So who is ultimately responsible? AI isn’t something like an unfortunate mechanical failure (though even than someone bears responsibility). If the government is using AI for targeting military attacks, it sure better understand every single risk associated and be ready to swallow every ounce of responsibility. You don’t get to say “AI messed up, oops” and move on. You told the machine what to do, so you’re responsible. Every one of those school girls’ blood is on your hands.

[-] floquant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 12 hours ago

You don’t get to say “AI messed up, oops” and move on

That's the neat part!

[-] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

So who is ultimately responsible?

I'd say the Commander-In-Chief of the armed forces. So, a felon rapist pedophile.

[-] Kintarian@lemmy.world 17 points 15 hours ago

Now everyone involved is going to jail, right? …. RIGHT?

[-] timewarp@lemmy.world 14 points 15 hours ago

If anyone tried for murder can't use the same excuse and get away with it, then neither should they.

[-] zuckey78@sh.itjust.works 9 points 14 hours ago
[-] areakode@riskeratspizza.com 1 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Probably a well trained military crewman who knows how to follow orders from the guys up top who ~~should~~ have already done the vetting of the information. Can't fault them.

[-] JamesTBagg@lemmy.world 4 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, if you're a trigger puller you assume you've been assigned legitimate military targets. When the "sights" you're aiming down are an ISR feed from a satellite, drone or just GPS coordinates, it can be difficult to verify the building you've locked is a school or headquarters of something. Complicated by the pace of attack this administration demanded.

[-] Equilibrium@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

Wow, now we can pin war crimes on artificial intelligence instead of commanders.

[-] Nonconfrontational@lemmy.ml 2 points 14 hours ago

They were never pinned on commanders, lmao.

[-] 5oap10116@lemmy.world 5 points 14 hours ago

Im so relieved. I thought we'd have to blame someone for killing over 100 children

[-] wampus@lemmy.ca 3 points 13 hours ago

Meh, I was having an argument with a coworker recently about AI's evils, and all the doomsayers and apoca-hype profiteering that the big AI companies do. I think this article lays out more plainly what the risks of AI are in terms of ending the human race, than any of the claude-cult stock pumpers that come forward.

It won't be some AGI super intelligence that ascends and then does away with humanity. It'll be some random military sorts who get a prompt, and trigger a huge conflict / disaster based on bullshit fed to them from an AI. The AI won't even do it 'intentionally', it'll just be a convincing enough marionette's lie, fed to a low enough IQ, to open fire.

[-] bad1080@piefed.social 1 points 10 hours ago

flawed intelligence, in the FBI? how did they figure that one out?

[-] DanceMomsSavedMe@lemmy.zip 4 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

"You see everyone, it wasn't an evil action that we did to terrorize a group of people"

They even refer to it in this article as a "military targeting error" no. This is propaganda.

[-] TomMasz@piefed.social 3 points 14 hours ago

Golly, I've lived long enough to see the US become a rogue nation. Isn't it time for the CIA to foment a revolution so they can install democracy?

[-] frisbird@lemmy.ml 2 points 14 hours ago

Can you imagine not even bothering to plan your first strike on a country that your military has deemed too powerful to attack for some time?

Can you imagine abandoning your old planning techniques for a totally novel technique and getting the exact same results of bombing civilians directly?

Can you imagine claiming it was a targeting error and then double tapping it?

This is incredible reporting

[-] magnue@lemmy.world 2 points 14 hours ago

I've suspected for a while now that the US admin has just been vibing with AI this whole time to make their decisions.

[-] CubitOom@infosec.pub 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I asked chatgpt what were viable targets in a preemptive strike for a war to distract from the fact that the president is a pedophile, what happened next will blow you away.

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago

There is no AI. That was the first mistake. Thinking that there is.
