What? The car GM didn't want to sell isn't selling?

Gas prices are reaching record levels and bringing the Bolt back is a "huge mistake". Hard to wrap my head around any of this making sense outside of short term investor concerns.

short term investor concerns

This is the only thing the system responds to.

[-] JustPlainDave@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

If nobody's buying it then it doesn't make sense to produce it. The original Bolt was a pretty good car, but nobody bought it. So they quit making it.

It's simple: China has been taking BEVs seriously for 20+ years and US companies (and govt) simply haven't, so China has the better product. Once BYD etc sets up factories in Mexico, the BEV market is theirs and nobody will want to pay twice the price for GM's inferior crap. It makes much more sense for them to squeeze what they can from a declining ICE market than to spend decades of losses trying to catch up to The King.

Cars in general are getting wildly expensive, so is insurance. It’s going to push people to own fewer cars and into accepting self-driving services like Waymo. You will own nothing and be happy.

[-] Equinox1289@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

Which is also the most expensive way to do public transit.

GM can't stick with an eletric car to save their ass. I remember the EV1.

[-] sparkyshocks@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

GM doesn't want to make cars.

Their current generation electric platform is optimized for small SUVs (Equinox, Blazer, Lyriq, Optiq, even the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX), and their bigger electric platform for big trucks and SUVs (Silverado, Hummer) isn't selling all that well, but is strategically important to them.

It's easy for them to leave cars behind, because they haven't made money selling cars in like 20 years.

[-] OccasionallyFeralya@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 day ago

This isn’t even a car though this is a small suv

[-] CedricWhaley@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 days ago

At least they're not forcing everyone to return these so they can be destroyed.

[-] NotMyOldRedditName@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

At least they had experience making everyone return their vehicles when their batteries were catching fire. 😅

[-] blindbunny@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

At least is pulling a lot of weight. All they learned is not to make lease only cars because it was a PR nightmare

[-] TheDemonBuer@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago

The US EV market is pathetic. Half of all EV sales are just two Tesla models. All the other auto makers are competing for the other half, of a shrinking pie. That pie isn't big enough for Chevy to offer both a small electric SUV and an electric subcompact SUV, that's in a similar price range. The Equinox EV is the better selling model so it makes sense they'd keep that one and ditch the Bolt.

[-] dadGPT@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

people just dont want to deal with dealers

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

But all the Lemmings complaining about affordable EVs are also full of shit. It's a small, affordable EV, and no one is buying because it doesn't have Car play , but everyone also doesn't want a connected car and wants to drag an old Subaru out of a wrecking yard. $5 gas and people are still buying ICE, then they can post about unaffordability on Lemmy.

This is why car companies avoid social media because what people say they want and what they actually buy is very different.

When my parents were looking for an EV, I didn’t even bother looking at anything from an American brand. Chevy was all “No CarPlay or android auto in new EVs” And I was like “oh GM, please go die in a fire, you’re a waste of market space.”

Which is funny because a lot of those same complaints aren't directed at Tesla or rivian, etc

I didn’t look at any of those either actually.

[-] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 2 days ago

My past Bolt had carplay and android auto, did they change it? If so, dumb.

[-] thatkomputerkat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah, in 2023 they announced that they would phase out CarPlay And android auto in EVs while continuing to support it in their ICE models starting with the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV.

[-] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago

The Honda Prologue, which is basically a rebranded Blazer EV, still has Android Auto. But it's also being discontinued after 2026.

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

But I thought no one wanted spyware in cars??

[-] LaLuzDelSol@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah people can't figure out what they want haha

[-] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

no there's a hundred or so of them.

I'm personally ambivalent but insisted on a Chinese ev (we have a BYD here in Australia) as they're not reporting anything to my government but my GF loves it and uses it to warm the car in winter before she heads to work in the morning.

I also don't use Android auto in the car for that reason and am happy with in car navigation.

there are a few no connected services ev's here in Australia; Cupra, Subaru, VW and Toyota spring to mind. Their biggest complaint is no connected services :)

My partner decided to take out a loan on his 2023 Chevy Bolt rather than pay in full, with the idea if the new model came out with features he wanted (mainly continued support for Comma self driving) he would do a trade-in. Then we saw the news that the new Chevy Bolt is basically a downgrade in terms of things like not having Android Auto anymore, so he just paid off the loan in full and has no interest in "upgrading." Chevy shot themselves in the foot; US EV manufacturers need to get their shit together.

[-] MyOpinion@lemmy.today 5 points 2 days ago

You could not pay me to drive a GM car.

[-] fyzzlefry@retrolemmy.com 6 points 2 days ago

I didn't even know it was back

[-] chahk@beehaw.org 3 points 2 days ago

Apparently, it's not.
