Capitalism can't function when the competition has to spend 5 years building a multi billion dollar chip fab.

[-] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 40 points 4 days ago

This is exactly how capitalism functions, it's happening under capitalism.

[-] roofuskit@lemmy.world 27 points 4 days ago

I'm talking about the "controls" that people claim make capitalism work.

Buddy, five years is nothing...

And the crunch started in 2019, more than five years ago.

The real problem is coming tho:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASML

It is the largest supplier to the semiconductor industry and, as of 2026, the world's only manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are required to manufacture the most advanced semiconductor chips. As of January 2026, ASML had a market capitalization of approximately $527 billion, making it Europe's largest technology company and one of its most valuable companies overall.

They are the only ones who can build the machine that goes into the building youre worried about.

That is the shit that right now js impossible to compete against, and the Dutch have it because of instead of constantly playing catch up, they leapfrogged. If that Dutch company doesn't sell you their machine, the building your talking about is pointless

The only way to beat them, is someone else takes the short term hit to leapfrog them.

That iswhat capitalism needs to function, a constant cycle of leapfrogs that leaves corporations in the dust so new ones have space to grow. When we prop up outdated corps, it doesn't work

And right now China is trying to catch up with that technology. They might be lagging today, but they are a huge market, and they will eventually catch up, maybe not completely but enough to be competitive.

Plus their LLMs need a lot less hardware resources for inferences.

Don't forget that all US frontier models are operating at a huge loss, because if they need to charge market rates their market will shrink significantly.

So this GPU crunch is forcing Chinese labs to innovate and find clever ways to achieve higher intelligence with constrained resources.

And cloud and computing cost will only go up now, due to exploding hardware prices, which will make the whole business model of the US frontier models even more unprofitable.

More like 25 years building a multi-trillion dollar fab just to get close to the same production rate and quality.

Could have sworn I saw some articles saying it’d get better in 2027. Let’s see how long it lasts before we see “it’ll be bad through 2028”. This is going to become the new “Due to higher than normal call volumes…”

Could have sworn I saw some articles saying it’d get better in 2027

I don't recall ever reading that. From what I remember, it was always "It'll be bad until at least 2027"

[-] Nollij@sopuli.xyz 2 points 3 days ago

They were related. Micron (IIRC) was going to spin up additional capacity in late 2027. The additional supply, assuming constant demand, should (at least in theory) lower prices.

And, ladies, there is also a long line of you wanting to suck my enormous dick, so if you want in, please fill out the application and I'll notify you of any openings in my schedule, the memory maker CEO continued.

~~This self-serving corporate propaganda doesn't deserve to be posted.~~

[Edit: Apologies to OP, the article itself is actually quite alright.]

Every single one of them can go fuck themselves.

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 13 points 4 days ago

Sounds like I won't be buying much in the way of electronics for a while

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 4 days ago

Stick toys are gonna be big in 2027. Get in now.

Seriously. I got a steam deck and a 5ish year old tower. Between the two I got as much power as I'll need or want for a while. I might pick up a used steam machine at some point, but where I'm at now.... I can play about anything I want and I have a big backlog. I might need a new laptop in the next year or two, but it doesn't need a discreet GPU or >16gb ram for my use case so I can cheap out on it a little. Outside of that, I'm ready to just watch this insanity with a a big ol bucket of 🍿.

[-] dtrain@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago

In no part of the article did he celebrate.

[-] tempest@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 days ago

It may not be in the article, but Micron's stock is up 550%, he's definitely celebrating.

[-] Miller@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

He might be more concerned about the global ramifications of the hike, but I doubt it.

[-] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 days ago

These people are concerned with only money. It's a sickness

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago

The article's source is an earnings call...

It's safe to assume the few quotes weren't the entire thing...

[-] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

He had the decency to wait until after the article. He totally let loose then.
