Not just reportedly. Someone leaked the trailer on reddit.

EA needs resources for the next FIFA guys, try to understand, we need to make sacrifices for fifa.

[-] egrets@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

EA actually weren't able to secure a new license for FIFA.

They're still doing football/soccer games, but it's called "EA Sports FC" now. Catchy, huh?

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

I'm out of the loop it seems, or I've blocked it out

[-] starchylemming@lemmy.world 14 points 2 days ago

Oh that actually looks good

[-] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 22 points 2 days ago

Does it? It looks completely generic to me, replace the characters and the alien species and you could have any other franchise in there.

The trailer goes like: boringly obvious convo > spy movie flash cuts > obvious convo > obvious reveal > Liara! > boring fight scene where MC has no challenge (oh look, they used one ability!). There's nothing that could indicate this being a good successor to the trilogy, enough to warrant a 5. At least with Andromeda it was clearly a spin off. I don't see how this trailer gives any indication aside from Liara that this matters at all for the Mass Effect mainline story and universe.

Fans are just desperate, and on denial. Mass Effect is a trilogy, it ended with ME3. There are no further stories to tell on the main timeline.

[-] alphabethunter@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

I watched it again on my pc just to see if I had missed anything. The only thing is that they were apparently calling it Mass Effect Universe, not ME5, so it seems this was also supposed to be a spin off. It could've been fun, but I doubt it would've been more than just an okay game.

Pre production trailer. Means they didn't have an actual game.

[-] Gerudo@lemmy.zip 6 points 2 days ago

I don't care if this was a trailer 5 years out from the game. I absolutely loved Mass Effect and this closure is pretty close to the top of the list of my most anticipated games that has been shuttered.

Thank you. I wouldn't have ever known about it

Does this mean ME5 was close to completion, or that a trailer can be cobbled together early in production? I suspect it's the latter seeing how many trailers precede the game by several years.

[-] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 63 points 2 days ago

Have you seen the last Elder Scrolls trailer?

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 33 points 2 days ago

Was there a new one? Or do you mean the picture of mountains that they showed back when there was a baby in my life?

[-] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 30 points 2 days ago
[-] yakko@feddit.uk 15 points 2 days ago

That's fine honestly. It's free to hate them while they're spending several years not making it, but once it's out I'll have to start hating the game.

[-] Klear@piefed.world 8 points 2 days ago

I think it's lame to blindly hate a game after years of work of hundreds of modders who will eventually make it playable.

[-] yakko@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

You're right, I'll stay excited for whatever the TESR team do with it, eventually. Something to look forward to in retirement.

[-] Epp@lemmus.org 2 points 2 days ago

I like you.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 days ago

Or do you mean the picture of mountains that they showed back when there was a baby in my life?

Baby gonna be in high school by the time TES:VI comes out

[-] Riverview_Legal@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Baby gonna be in high school by the time TES:VI comes out

That;s pretty optimistic. I was thinking the heat death of the universe when TES: VI comes out.

[-] countvon@lemmy.world 20 points 2 days ago

It would most likely have been a cinematic trailer, created by a VFX company hired for the job. ME5 was in early production, likely no game to speak of at this point, just storylines and concept art mostly. Maybe a vertical slice demo, but I doubt it.

[-] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They started working on art assets, sound and animations at the very least for this WIP trailer but even then the ingame trailer isnt complete (lots of reused assets). My guess is its all paperwork with maybe a few blockouts to prototype new gameplay ideas while the art team worked on the trailer

[-] doleo@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah and they repeatedly said it was in "early stages" of production.

[-] Whitebrow@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Concepts of early stages of production.

[-] ripcord@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

It looks like it was early production

[-] sparky1337@ttrpg.network 3 points 2 days ago

From what everyone was able to cobble together with rumors and hearsay is that they had a core idea ready, but waited till after Veilguard to commit more resources to the project. I guess we can assume it got a bit further along before it was canned.

[-] CheesyFingers@piefed.social 19 points 2 days ago

A trailer doesn't mean the game will be any good lmao
Modern Bioware was not the studio you used to love.

[-] DoucheBagMcSwag@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 2 days ago

Cyberpunk 2077 also had a trailer .. And then we had to wait 8 years. That doesn't mean anything

[-] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 3 points 2 days ago

It does mean the company behind the leveraged buyout can write off the canceled game as a loss, so they can walk away with boatloads more cash at the end of the day.

[-] flameleaf@ani.social 9 points 2 days ago

Alternative title: EA cancelled the only game they were working on that I was interested in playing

How are they still in business? I guess there's a lot of sports fans players?

[-] aksdb@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Being a successful business does not mean being beloved. Another example: Oracle

[-] flameleaf@ani.social 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

True, although Oracle provides Infrastructure to businesses and developers. They're a necessary evil, whereas as EA publishes... video games. Products whose primary purpose is to be enjoyed?

I know I'm not their target demographic. I feel sorry for FIFA and Sims fans.

[-] M137@lemmy.today 8 points 2 days ago

Ok ¯\(ツ)/¯

A trailer means nothing, and I don't understand how everyone are so mad about this when most people hated mass effect andromeda and have hated everything else they've done since even more. (I actually enjoyed it, but it's definitely not as good as ME1 and 2, about as good as ME3).

[-] CrimeIsLegalNow@ani.social 1 points 1 day ago

Launch gameplay wasn't exactly unplayable but the scene and lighting design of the introduction does still give me nightmares, and they somehow made the multiplayer mode less fun and more grindy so... I get it.

[-] Shayeta@feddit.org 7 points 2 days ago

That ship of Thesius sailed off a long of time ago. Rest in piss BioWare.

[-] spacegoat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I usually prefer creating female characters but for whatever reason femshep never did it for me. The default male shep is just so perfect.

[-] ximtor@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Fuuuuuuuuck EA argh. I didn't even know they owned BioWare. Why the fuck do the shit companies own everything nice.

Well at least there is indie games..but fuck EA

[-] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Then you having not been paying attention. No one not owned by EA would do shit as stupid as switching to the frostbite engine, putting loot boxes in ME3, or making Anthem.

[-] ximtor@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 days ago

They could just make their fucking fifa and battlefield and what not garbage and leave the good stuff alone :'(

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Wait, when did we get Mass Effect 4?

[-] deadbeef79000 6 points 2 days ago
[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That doesn't count for multiple reasons.

[-] deadbeef79000 3 points 2 days ago

I actually quite liked it... not as much as I liked 1-3 but I was still entertained.

Caveat: I only played them after the legendary rereleases, so never had the buggy awful experience.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Same, but I missed the original story.

[-] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

And the ME5 wasn't going to be a sequel to 3 either as I understand. So not really ME5.
