*somebody creates a new tech*

People: how can we use that for Miku?

[-] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

You can't touch them, so nothing for weebs.

[-] TwodogsFighting@lemdro.id 7 points 1 day ago

Is that a threat?

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 32 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Seems a bit too good to be true tbh. There is a lot of hologramming going on outside of the device in the provided video. Like waaay outside of it. Seems a bit sus.

Like yeeaahh suuure, thats totally what its gonna look like...

[-] Grimy@lemmy.world 21 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

That was my first thought. How does it do it? In another part of the videos, the bubbles are cut off by the screen so I'm calling bull for now.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah exactly, why is only the left fish sticking out in my screenshot and the right one is cut off?

[-] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

Do this for me: hold your phone 9-12 inches from your face and stare at it. Then alternate closing your left and right eyes. See the screen jump left and right? That jump is the amount an image can appear to leave the screen. The photograph is showing you the image of the phone the left eye sees and the image of the fish the right eye sees. The image itself is a fake of course, but it's likely somewhat close to what it would be like to view the actual 3D display.

[-] HumbleExaggeration@feddit.org 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Isnt this the only way to simulate a holographic screen to be viewed on a classic 2d screen? It is like showing someone the perfect black of oled screens on an LCD display or showing the benefits of 144 Hz on a common 60 Hz display. Somehow you have to translate it.

[-] hashferret@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Eye tracked fake hologram. There's a product called the looking glass go in a similar form factor which uses a lenticular lens of sorts. Holograms can appear to extend 2 inches into or out of the screen and you can "look around" objects with zero eye tracking. Also works for multiple observers at once.

3D anime characters seem to be more of a novelty than anything, but I still think it's a shame that the 3DS's 3D feature didn't get used in titles later in the console's lifespan. Compared to the instability of it on the original 3DS, the New 3DS perfected it.

[-] Obituarykidney@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

I had a 3DS back in the day and that thing gave me a headache and made my eyes hurt, even as a kid. I was annoyed they made me buy it to play the new games when I was just turning the 3D off anyways, and still had a perfectly functional DS.

[-] 31ank@ani.social 1 points 1 day ago

did you try to OG 3DS or the New 3DS? I also had the headache problem with the OG, but the New 3DS fixed it with the better tracking I suppose

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 20 points 2 days ago

Cool. Now make it a 10x10x10 foot room and figure out how to make the holograms touchable.

I mean Barclay. Lieutenant Barclay.

It's not fun if I can't feel the chair I am sitting on strangely.

HoloGuard: don't touch holograms, you holohobo!

The Paris thing you mention sounds interesting, but I can't open the link you posted. :(

yeah I get a warning to. the lab did not last long after the founders retired so the certificate is expired. I bypass it because I know the lab. even that for whatever reason they used ww2 for this stuff. it comes up on a search if you look for the paric vr system maybe adding haptic feedback but it will still have the certificate issue. Imma try a cut and paste:

Immersive Design and Fabrication of Cranial Implants on PARIS™

Researchers: Andrew Johnson, Chris Scharver, Jason Leigh, Vaidya Chandrasekhar, Ray Evenhouse, School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences

Funding: NSF, DoE

The Electronic Visualization Laboratory (EVL) at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) in cooperation with UIC’s Virtual Reality in Medicine Laboratory and Department of Neurosurgery, are developing a collaborative augmented reality environment with haptic feedback to provide a precise method to construct and revise pre-surgical cranial implant designs. This process can correct traumatic head injuries and restore normal facial appearance.

UIC doctors and medical modelers pioneered a method in 1996 to make custom-fitting cranial implants prior to surgery using the patient’s computed tomography (CT) data. In it, a computer model of the skull and defect is generated and sent to a rapid prototyping stereo-lithography machine to produce a physical model. This physical model then serves as a template for the sculpting, molding and casting techniques required to manufacture the actual implant.

Although this computer-assisted technique is a proven improvement over the still widely used method where the implant is fashioned in the operating room (the heat generated during the curing process often causes tissue damage), it is often prohibitively expensive because of the number of individuals and steps involved in the pre-fabrication process.

Now, using EVL’s PARIS (Personal Augmented Reality Immersive System), a surgeon and medical modeler can view a three-dimensional model of a patient’s CT data, and collaboratively review, sculpt and “virtually” build an implant using their hands. An authentic sensation of the mold sculpting process is achieved using SensAble Technologies’ PHANTOM force-feedback device.

EVL-developed software provides the collaborative capabilities to allow surgeons and medical modelers in geographically distant locations to review and revise the implants over advanced networks. Patients can also view and discuss the post surgical results beforehand.

This digital, networked, collaborative modeling environment aims to eliminate many time-consuming steps and make this surgical procedure widely available. The digital model of the implant can be exported directly to a variety of rapid-prototyping manufacturing modalities making “hands on” sculpting, molding, and casting steps unnecessary, and allowing the use of new, state-of-the-art implant materials.

PARIS system development and cranial implant research are made possible by major funding to the University of Illinois at Chicago from the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Infrastructure award EIA-9802090 and Major Research Instrumentation award EIA-9871058, and the Department of Energy (DoE) Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) program, award B519836. CAVERNsoft and Quanta are funded by NSF awards EIA-9802090, ANI-9730202, ANI-0129527 and the NSF Partnerships for Advanced Computational Infrastructure (PACI) cooperative agreement (ACI-9619019) to the National Computational Science Alliance.

Isn’t this just the 3DS technology?

[-] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

That's what I was thinking. Glasses free 3d tech has been a thing for over a decade. There were smartphones that did it too. 3d was a really popular gimmick for a while. I did like the idea of 3d on phones and their 3d cameras.

[-] luthis 4 points 1 day ago

Yes, interesting tech etc. Maybe we'll see it develop into larger wrap around screens or something.

Fucking useless product though, it's a fancy desk ornament you'll forget about after a week, and the same thing could be done with a phone and eye tracking cameras. I prefer my vr headset, I can do a lot more with it.

[-] sbv@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

But can it bring them to life in a jar?

[-] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

That's a nice.
