I’ve been looking at the cost to buy a farm and how much it could earn. Being disabled, I’d need to design it around my health but I think you can make it managable quite easily. Most of my ideas are already shown to work, so I wouldn’t be doing anything that would be considered ground-breaking.

The other benefit to running a small farm is it makes it far easier to pivot, you reduce problems of water droughts, etc… but if done right, i wwas working out if you can get through the first year for crops to get established, you could be making £50k a year fairly comfortably.

Aim for perennials, so you reduce the need to seed each year, grow a wide variety, you have a good basis for opening a small farm shop. Setup pre-orders so people can order, then all you pick is whats ordered. Tie in with other local farmers, build the farmos software to track cost/prices and you could even create a pick your own farm to reduce labour.

I really wished I knew someone who could invest in this because I have so many ideas for earning money with land. Hell, there’s farmers in the UK earning around £2k a month just from YouTube subscriptions, so you could turn the whole project into a youtube channel.

The biggest issue though is being disabled and being unable to repay any loan until the farm is generating an income which makes it impossible to get normal funding but the more I think of a farm, the more I think it would benefit my health in the long run! 😞

Use to pay any other debt with higher interest rates than said loan. After that, if this still has high rates, pay back as much as possible. If the rate is good enough, use it to buy a house to live in.

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 2 points 15 hours ago

I'd use half of it to buy a small farm. Use the other half to cover my living expenses for a couple of years until the farm is up and running enough to be selfreliant.

Then I'd sell my current house and repay the loan.

[-] slazer2au@lemmy.world 91 points 1 day ago

Depends on the payback terms and interest rate.

[-] bacon_pdp@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

This is the correct answer.

[-] roserose56@lemmy.zip 2 points 16 hours ago

Buy a house and give the rest to people in need.

[-] Stormy@thelemmy.club 1 points 15 hours ago

But its a loan you have to pay back?

[-] roserose56@lemmy.zip 2 points 15 hours ago

You are right, I missed that one, I'm buying a house and renovate it

[-] kylie_kraft@lemmy.world 55 points 1 day ago

pay it back immediately and probably get hit with a thousand dollars in fees anyway, because loans are stupid.

Freak out over how I was going to repay the loan

Just use the money you borrowed.

I'd pay it back immediately. The interests for something like that are in the tens of thousands.

[-] SourDragon@lemmy.world 3 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Be in the worst debt imaginable when it's time to pay it back

Edit: many of the top comments have the same idea. What kinda world do we live in where this is the more agreed upon answer than anything else?

[-] Fallibilist@feddit.uk 1 points 21 hours ago

I fail to see what is so injust about it. Loan, by definition, is something you're expected to pay back. If someone borrows you their car you return it with a full tank. If someone borrows you money you pay back with interests. Seems fair to me.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That entirely depends on the terms of the loan.

Short term low interest? Buy some stocks that might go up more than the interest.

Long term low interest? Buy a spread of land and breed heirloom hogs and fancy ingredients and sell them to fancy restaurants and dumb yuppies and dinks.

But if the rate is over 9% you can fuck off.

[-] jaykrown@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Smart, I would do something similar, except was thinking ducks depending on the area. Pig farming seems less profitable.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

People complain about pigs but I found them pretty easy to care for. But if you’re going for a niche market you need a gimmick and heirloom breeds like the Berkshire and Kune Kune can get a fairly good price for being fancy.

Plus they are way less needy than The Other White Meat in terms of shelter and care, and they taste waaaaay better and give you more delicious lard.

(Dear god let me flee the suburbs.)

[-] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Pay off my house. Pay someone else to fix the rotten floor joists. Pay off my car. Wait, why wouldn’t I just get a new house?

[-] crandall@lemmy.today 20 points 1 day ago
[-] ccunning@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago

That’s gonna make it hard to pay back the loan…

[-] Fleppensteijn@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago

Go to one of those countries where they can't come after me when I don't pay it back

[-] tal@lemmy.today 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

If it's market rate, just pay it back. Don't have a use for it. People won't be lending money at a rate that one can reliably expect to make a return.

If it's way below market rate for some reason, and it's long-term, then maybe invest it. I'd want to understand why I'd be getting a loan on those terms, though.

[-] CapuccinoCoretto@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Use it as collateral for as many additional fraudulent loans as possible. Ponzi myself up to the billions temporarily. Then leverage those billions for more loans in the trillions then more and more until I then crash the global banking and finance systems.

Then sit back, cook a marshmellow on a campfire made from the ruins of the old world and reflect on starting anew.

[-] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 7 points 1 day ago

Move all the funds to a cayman islands or swiss shell corporation then file for bankruptcy to remove the debt and move to a country with no extradition to the US.

[-] ltxrtquq@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/countries-without-extradition

What country would you want to move to? I've heard plenty of people reference countries with no extradition, but I never really looked into which ones those actually were. Without knowing anything about it, I think I'd go with Vanuatu.

[-] quediuspayu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 15 hours ago

TIL that Andorra doesn't have an extradition treaty.

[-] _thebrain_@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago

There are a lot of countries that have extradition policies that don't follow them for people they consider citizens.

Take this example with Greece: https://www.ctpublic.org/news/2026-09-30/kosta-diamantis-cts-disgraced-former-deputy-budget-director-sentenced.

Greece has extradition treaties with the US but won't extradite the scumbag because he is a citizen.

This happens with a lot of people who flee to their home country.

[-] palordrolap@fedia.io 8 points 1 day ago

Void the transaction. There's no way I'd be able to pay it back and I do not need any of that and everything that goes with it.

Heck, I might not even be able to afford the interest that accrued on it in the short time I had it and I'd be looking for pro bono legal representation ASAP if the lender tried to stick me with it.

There's no way I would have knowingly signed for it, so it ought to be an open and shut case.

No thank you. No way. Nuh-uh.

Now if this million was to be no strings attached and no repayment required, half's getting invested properly after a chat with a financial advisor and the other half is going in the highest interest bank account(s) I can get for it. Then I'll live off 60-80% of the interest, leaving the rest to stave off inflation.

I'd still have to live a frugal lifestyle, but I'd be more comfortable than I am on government handouts and I wouldn't have to worry about a government stripping the help I currently get.

[-] janus2@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

pay off all my other debt instantly, use a couple k to replace broken things i put up with, make a 6 months' expenses emergency savings account, and invest the remainder in something relatively low risk that hopefully gives dividends equal to or greater than the monthly payment amount for this loan

my life would be relatively unchanged unless that investment dividend was crazy

[-] storm_shadow@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

Two chicks at the same time.

[-] Chozo@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

Fuckin' aye.

Buy some politicians, I can probably afford at least 10 with that.

[-] deadbeef79000 7 points 1 day ago

Politicians are embarrassingly cheap.

"Oh, you made a $10,000 donation? HOLD ME BACK, THE CORRUPTION IS CALLING ME!"

[-] MrOtingocni@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Abscond with the funds.

[-] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 3 points 1 day ago

Pay off debts. Save and invest. Maybe build a new pc. I’d really like to EV convert an old Ford Ranger I’ve got.

[-] EtnaAtsume@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

But it's a loan, not a grant. If you're paying off debts, you'd surely start with the $1,000,000 one, no?

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Depend on the interest rate, really, and any terms of repayment. If it's lower than the rest of the debt then it's best to clear off all the higher interest one, then use the rest of the loan to invest in something that will yield higher return than the loan long term. It's a loan, you really cannot spend it on something that doesn't have any ROI.

[-] Clambake0351@piefed.zip 3 points 1 day ago

My home loan is less than that and it already hurts to pay every month. With a second big loan, I'd have to declare bankruptcy.

Now if this is a gift of free money - I'd pay off that damn home loan so it's one less thing to worry about. Remaining balance on the $1M would probably get invested in the hopes that I could push forward my retirement by a couple of decades.

[-] tburkhol@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

The meme "small loan of $1M," back in the early 70s, would be around $9M today, with inflation, on excellent "Daddy's money" terms. Nevermind the subsequent supplemental "loans". Easily enough to push your retirement forward to Thursday.

[-] OriginEnergySux@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

In Australia, I'd invest in drone defence and solar power company stocks that have existing contracts with AI data centres

[-] MisterNeon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I would make a TTRPG system with a corresponding web app interface people could use for free, then make low-budget video games that use those same rules that I would sell.

[-] TheHotze@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

If it was from family or something like the 1% get as kids, open a restaurant.

[-] earlier_riser@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Live off the interest.
