Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Harvested potatoes this morning and was pleasantly surprised by the haul from my tiny plot. Gotta figure out what to plant in the space next - maybe some pumpkin

Potato harvest

They look amazing! I've only tried growing potatoes a couple of times and never got too many. That's an amazing crop you have there!

[–] happy_piwakawaka 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Beginners luck on my part. They got absolutely flattened by the wind so I wasn't confident of getting much of anything, but real happy with how my forays into growing stuff is progressing

[–] Dave 3 points 10 months ago

I've definitely had my own surprises. A couple of years back we had tomato plants growing like bushes, we could not eat them all, the dog helped himself to heaps and still there were too many.

Then there's also the courgette plant that would pump out a new one every couple of days for what felt like months, we got so sick of them. Then one day it died, like really died, the thing flattened and went brown and was pretty much gone in a couple of days. It didn't do living or dying by halves.

That's quite the haul!! What variety did you grow? My last attempt a few years ago got some kind of blight late in the season. I've stuck with tomatoes and chilis since then.

I think those were Nadine potatoes if I recall correctly

Holiday mode kicking in hard, thought it was a different day of the week than it actually is. Whee!

[–] Dave 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Haha I've been struggling with that too. Also struggling with the idea that I'm back to work next week 🙁

[–] Ozymati 5 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Yeah I don't wanna go back to work. whinges in corporate

When I get back I have to try to unsnarl an issue with user identification and access to client data where the user login is mediated by a separate app (SSO as part of a whole other project that is going on). The current requirements call for a verified identity from the admin user at account creation which puts the requirement for ID validation outside of the app my team is trying to implement. However, it has been pointed out (quite legitimately) that doing that puts up a barrier to account creation.

I'm of the opinion that we could track ID verified users downstream in the user profile in our app instead, which not only lets them get in the door nice and easy but also gives us future options about just how aggro we want to be with having an actual identifiable human associated with an account.

However, doing the legwork to validate my opinion is going to be a huge PITA. Also the vendor is onboarding next month so in addition to this nice little mess I get to revalidate pretty much all requirements against the actual capabilities of the chosen platform. Including the idea I have that we could incorporate an admin user ID verification step into profile creation. Le sigh. At least I have a minion to help.

And I don't know maybe the project director will swoop down accompanied by a beam of heavenly light and angelic choir to tell us we don't need ID validation at all....

I guess going back to work is a bit of a mixed bag.

I've seen that sort of thing done, depending on who the decision makers are there's a good chance of convincing them. In the past we've greatly reduced the strictness of automated checks because once they are in the door it's a lot easier to help them. Better that than have them struggle to get in the door and you don't know about it.

And the one I'm doing at the moment I'm pushing for no verification at all. It sounds crazy to people when we first say it, but we do backoffice checks once they start trying to pay for stuff so the account itself doesn't need those checks (we repeat the checks every order). That sounds similar to what you want, and I haven't had issues convincing anyone.

[–] Ozymati 2 points 10 months ago

Yep we can do all kinds of stuff that the account user will not notice at all (unless of course they fail a check) while having to do an ID validation is very noticeable.

I understood most of that, I don't envy you!

I'm spending a few more days in Tauranga visiting family. I came down on the InterCity with my daughter, we prefer it to driving even though it takes longer.

My partner is staying home to look after the hundreds of rare seedlings we've germinated since our trips to the tropics. Sadly we haven't found anyone we can trust to look after them, so she's having some quiet time to herself. That's the trouble with living on a block, you can't just lock up and go.

Family member still semi bed bound so am spending my days with them and sleeping in sleepout at night. Feel sorry for other family members who were meant to be having a proper break but we're all doing what we can.

There's this chicken here that looks like a giant duckling crossed with a quail.

Beautiful weather!

There’s this chicken here that looks like a giant duckling crossed with a quail.

Does this chicken have an accompanying photo? Or do you know the breed so we can look up pictures?

[–] liv 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That could be fun! I will try and take a photo. It's weird because I know both its parents and its sibling and none of them look like it.

[–] Dave 2 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Interesting, so it's not a specific breed, just a quirky one?

[–] liv 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Ok internet is dicey here but I managed to upload this shot of it with its sibling from the same batch.

Edit: and this one of the whole family!

[–] Dave 2 points 10 months ago

Thanks! After seeing them, I think I've forgotten what chickens look like haha. I look at those and think they don't really look like chickens, but can't explain why because they have the parts of chickens.

[–] liv 2 points 10 months ago

Yep, a one of a kind chicken!

Sorry if this is a dumb question but this thread says 11 comments. Yet i can only see 4. This happens often wher i cant see t amount of comments listed. Im new to lemmy and very average with computers in general. What am i doin wrong peeps?

[–] sylverstream 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Welcome to Lemmy! Great to have you here. How do you access Lemmy? Via the browser or an app?

There are 4 top level comments, some of them have replies which appear under the top level comments like a tree view. They may be collapsed by default, that's why you may not see them.

[–] AnimalSalad 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Hey cheers that sounds like it may be my issue. Currently using memmy app but definitley open to suggestions as how best to use lemmy :)

[–] sylverstream 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I use the app Liftoff. I don't know Memmy, sorry. Just try a couple and pick one you like :) lots of options.

[–] AnimalSalad 1 points 10 months ago

Thanks. Ill have a look at Liftoff.
