Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Had to have the "Porn Discussion" with my 14 year old. Bloody hilarious really, he was mortified. Poor little bugger... Totally unrelated note: did you know that Kindles have a basic web browser that can display grainy, grayscale images?!? 😂

Back in my day we used to print out jpegs 😁

[–] Axisential 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yep, that took like 25 minutes to download...

[–] eagleeyedtiger 2 points 9 months ago

And like 10 minutes to print out. Felt like mission impossible trying not to get caught.

You should try browsing the web using a terminal-based browser sometime, it's quite fun. :)

Which one are you using, I haven't found one that clicked for me yet. I've started using Toot TUI for mastodon and its great. Extra steps if you want to open photos etc, but given its just a text medium it just works better for reading. A TUI for RSS feeds is probably the next thing to grab for me.

This is elinks, I alternate between this and w3m. It's nice for browsing text-heavy sites like Wikipedia, or if I want to quickly look at a search result without needing to deep dive into the links.

Lol, that's great

Haha oh boy, there are always new challenges when you have kids.

[–] Axisential 2 points 9 months ago

Oh yes. And just when you think you've got your head around things, it all goes changing again

In case you missed it yesterday, there has been interest in creating a Rocket Lab community on Lemmy.nz

We don't allow users to create communities, rather we add them as and when needed after having a chat about it.

This would be for anyone interested, not just for lemmy.nz users or NZers but a general access community.

Does anyone have any concerns about adding a Rocket Lab community?

IMO it would be weird to have a dedicated community for a particular corporate entity, on this server. And it's not like we have only one aerospace company here.

Instead, why not have a generic space-themed community? There, one could also post about stuff like Dawn Aerospace's Mk-II Aurora missions, Starlink stuff (such as tie-ups with NZ telcos, new NZ plans etc), comet/aurora/eclipse sightings, maybe even stuff about NZ's dark sky reserves and astrophotography shots.

I like that idea - I really want to get organised to go see a launch from up in Mahia sometime; especially as I can combine that with getting some of the best tuatuas in the country :)

The intent was more to be a Rocket Lab community for anyone on Lemmy, and not focused on NZ (other than the obvious bit where they do all their launches here). But I take your point about our carefully curated list of communities including one for worshiping a company. I'm interested to hear other people's views on this.

There are already generic space communities on other instances, and I'm not sure we could really justify splitting out the NZ space stuff. To be honest, the stuff you've listed I'd rather just see posted here in !nz instead of split out into another community.

[–] d3Xt3r 5 points 9 months ago

Agreed. In that case, I'd say if some really wants a Rocket Lab-specific community that's not focused on NZ, they should create it on a server with a global audience, like lemmy.world or something.

I don't mind either way. Whatever floats your boat!

[–] eagleeyedtiger 4 points 9 months ago

The more the merrier I say!

[–] Ilovethebomb 3 points 9 months ago

I see no issue with this.
