Welcome to today's daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there's no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it's just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how's it going?

The bloody cat woke me up at like 5 and I didn't get back to sleep properly until after 6 30 and then overslept

Got the day off today, went out for a brief run and got teeny tiny snow partway through. Brr. Going to be lazy for the rest of the day - staying inside by the fire, putting up with the cats' nonsense, reading for while. Midweek lazy days are the best.

Been watching the Alien movies. In the second one Aliens, the aliens were hatching from pods, and it was all gooey and slimy as they opened. Had to laugh, they looked like a nice batch of home-made Natto.

Had to have some Natto on my breakfast toast this morning!!

I cheated and drove to work this morning. Of course it stopped raining just as I left the house but by then it was too late. Lots of pretty photos around of snow-dusted hills but I'm happy to be tucked up in a nice warm office. Hope everyone is staying warm and dry today!

So I started a new job this week as "assistant grounds person" at a college and its pretty great to be honest, learning a lot of new skills, everything from line marking the fields to fertilizing, digging new drains, fixing bench seats, mowing, water blasting and more, its a lot of fun even if I do feel a little out of my depth at times.

New experiences are great, I'm pooped.

I’m always amazed at how perfect groundsmen make the grounds and pitches look between matches.

Hope it works out well for you.

So we’ve been looking at getting some solar panels installed at our place. Decided to get our roof checked out first for some maintenance, got the quote back yesterday.. 10k to replace a bunch of cracked tiles and rebed and repoint all the ridge capping. Additional 6.5k if we want to get it cleaned and repainted after that.

Sigh.. I guess the panels are going to have to wait another couple of years.

Can you pay for the roof repairs required for solar under a 1% "green" loan that banks offer alongside your mortgage for buying the solar panels themselves?

[–] eagleeyedtiger 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We're in the privileged position of being mortgage free at this point, however only one of us is working at the moment since our second child was born. I don't think we would qualify for the loan income-wise unfortunately. Not that we particularly want to take out any new loans.

We're actually pretty good at saving and have a decent sized emergency fund, but we also just bought a car to replace our old one. It's just too much at once for us to feel comfortable. I did go through our old building inspection report when we got the house and they did mention the deterioration of the pointing around our ridge caps back then. I really should have had it looked at a lot sooner.

We owned a house for about 10 years. When we bought it the building report said the decramastic tiles the roof was made of needed recoating. We did nothing until we sold it. Don't feel too bad 😆

Honestly I probably wouldn't have had it looked at if we weren't considering the solar panels.. Made sense to make sure the roof doesn't need any extra maintenance before it went on.

We probably don't really need to paint it right now, but its tempting to get it all done in one go

Have you had some quotes for the Panels & Installation yet?

Was wanting to look at getting Solar Panels in the future, and was wondering what installation on a Tiled Roof entails.

[–] eagleeyedtiger 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I did get a quote from smaller installer. Around 14K for a 6.6kW or 18K for an 8.8kW system. That's the installed estimate. If we wanted to add battery storage it was around another 11.5K extra which isn't worth it right now imo.

Having concrete tiles, they mentioned they would need to lift some tiles when installing as the mounting bracket would get attached to the trusses underneath.

Thank you for some data :)

Any chance they mentioned / gave off vibes that installing on a tiled roof had any additional complications or risks?

[–] eagleeyedtiger 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not really, it sounded like they had done it before. They asked if we do replace tiles to get some extra ones as some in case any break during installation. They were happy enough even before I told them I was going to get a roofer to look at it first.

Ahh good to know :)

I always wanted to get some solar panels and also some batteries. Wonder if batteries are steadily coming down in price?

[–] eagleeyedtiger 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

IIRC the installer I spoke to reckons batteries will come down in price in the next few years. Makes sense to me with more EV's being produced, there should be some advancement and increased availability in battery tech. He did mention panels were actually cheapest to install around 2021, there was some supply issues during the covid times but prices are returning to normal for panels.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 1 year ago

Interesting. Maybe I should slowly start doing some shopping around for panels and a setup that would allow for relatively easy battery add-ons down the line.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 1 year ago

Haha, recently had a roofer come in to fix a cracked tile - Feeling much better as they mentioned the roof is due for a repaint sometime in the near future.

Something I didn't expect to come across this morning, Carrie Underwood opening for Guns 'n Roses, and rocking out with Ace of Spades.
