Sorry mate, but I don't agree with this. If content isn't created the community will slowly die. Perhaps you just want to chat in the daily korero threads, but that doesn't mean everyone else feels the same. I'm glad someone is posting content, even if I don't agree with it.

They really don't. And I'd point out, heavy trade vehicles will do more damage to roads than a light hatch back.

Plus, more public transport means fewer cars on the road for tradies. Win-win!

I'm sure they won't do shit, but why would I let a foreign entity that EMPHATICALLY only cares about itself access to my information when I don't have to?

Corporations spy on us too, and this is motivated by profit. The Chinese government is much more insidious. If I were a Chinese expat, for example, I should genuinely be concerned about them finding information on me and arresting me when I visit there.

Absolutely, but those are parts which are subject to overseas QA, standards and testing. For example, I have a Toyota. Chinese made parts must meet their strict quality control, must adhere to safety standards, etc.

I know first hand that, in China, regulations and standards can be bypassed with the correct payments. I do not trust that they have not done so, especially when there are other, better, choices.

We are talking about a country that has things like Melamine laced baby formula quite frequently. How did these things pass regulators and testing? Bribary.

Exactly. Same reason I won't use Chinese brand phones.

I used to think the same, but then I realized the UK government is just as shit with a 5 year term. I don't think the issue is 3 years, I think it's the lack of political impetus to make meaningful change.

I'm getting real sick of constant can kicking.

Just...fucking so something!

I just cannot bring myself to trust my life to a Chinese car.

I have done business there. I know what it's like. It does not fill me with confidence.

Higher rates affects only people living in Auckland, but fuel tax can get people visiting as well. Plus, I would suspect the thinking was if you can't afford the fuel tax you can take a bus. Obviously the reality is different, but that was probably the intention.

If you listened to the Wayne Brown, there was hundreds of millions of dollars already allocated for roading and transport projects. It hand't all been spent yet because contracts had been signed but work hadn't started yet. As he said, all removing the regional fuel tax does is get rid of these projects, because he will not raise rates.

Full disclosure, this is the very first time I've agreed with anything he's said.

The other option is, of course, road tolls. His argument was this is a tool to reduce congestion (I find this dubious, but regardless), not to generate revenue for the council. And I'll be honest, I find little difference between a fuel tax and a road toll - both are regressive taxes and affect lower income earners more.

In my opinion, the central government needs to step in across the country and fund the shit out of infrastructure upgrades. 3 waters, but for roads and rail as well.

The 111 operator having to fish for information from someone who thinks they're on "the Te Ara Puaki expressway" is only a minor consequence, I guess.

This already happens.

Many years ago I called the ambulance while driving along a short section of highway that everyone in the region just calls "the bypass". They asked me if it was suchandsuch road. I literally had no idea. I've called it "the bypass" since its existence. I had to describe to the operator, while driving, where we were so they could find it on a map.

I really don't understand the pushback on this. If you've ever been to Canada, you will find every sign is either a symbol, or dual-language. In fact, all signs, including food packaging, must include English and French. It's not confusing, and you immediately gloss over the bits you don't understand.

It's such a trivial thing to show support for the other official language of New Zealand.
