Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Does this headline seem fair to you? He's a former ambulance driver, and his complaint is the new cycle lanes will prevent vehicles from moving out of the way of an ambulance. The headline presents this as him being concerned about damaging his car should he accidentally drive over one. It seems like a very clickbaity way to present the article if you ask me.

Decided to share the link to this as I read about it on stuff but then couldn’t remember how to get to it.

Search for books and find local booksellers with stock available. Complete orders with the local retailer.

Snapshot Saturday! (self.newzealand)

Photo Friday didn't last long (although I may have warned you that I'm terrible at sticking with things) but it's a new month and a new weekend so let's try a weekend challenge instead.

Snapshot Saturday is more about taking candid shots of everyday things, rather than hunting out the perfect shot for a particular prompt. So feel free to share a photo of something from your weekend - before and after shots of gardening progress, the shiny finish on your freshly cleaned vehicle (haha) or a good sunset.

Rules: No NSFW, no shots you didn't take yourself.

According to court documents obtained by Stuff, the Aucklander said he believed he was flying to Thailand to pick up an honour from the United Nations for the country's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

He was also promised US$23 million.

About 18 months before his arrest, Chang was contacted through WhatsApp by a man who called himself George, telling him he needed to be in Bangkok to sign a certificate.

Instead, he was duped into taking drugs in his luggage.

While he was in Bangkok, a woman met Chang at his hotel and gave him a black carry-on bag to "carry gifts for officials he would be meeting in Australia", the court documents said.

On 12 December between 8pm and 12:30am "New Zealand is in the prime place to see the first meteor shower associated with comet 46P.

I didn't see anything in the article about which direction to look.

Fascinating that the cost of the boats themselves is well under half the total cost of the project, I didn't realise this was such an expensive project.

The infrastructure will still be there long after the ferries have been replaced, of course.

Some key parts:

A leading education researcher warns new high-stakes NCEA literacy and maths tests could do more harm than good.

From 2026 students would not be allowed an NCEA certificate until they had passed all three tests in reading, writing and maths.

Darr said schools needed other options for assessing literacy and numeracy and meeting the requirements should not be a prerequisite for receiving an NCEA qualification.

Literacy and numeracy could be a separate qualification, or they could be included in the NCEA certificates in the same manner that standards from other subjects were included.

Alright guys, here's my game plan.

Start drinking.

Really, build that daily habit until you're spending at least $70 per week on alcohol.

Then just stop drinking next year.

Problem solved!

You know, like the ones with Vader walking the AT-AT, or the "Tattooine National Park" ones. I want to get some for the kids for Christmas, but everything I've seen so far is a) overseas, and b)$50 (at least) plus shipping. My Google-fu has failed me - does anyone know of an NZ source for these or similar?

I'm so keen for this one. I would use it all the time.

I have to ride out to Howick for a nice seaside ride:

The government will find out at noon today whether it has reaped about $1 billion from selling carbon credits, or whether it earned nothing and will have to wait until next year.

The income will be at least partly used to fund National's promised tax cuts.

The Emissions Trading Scheme requires many big fossil fuel polluters, including petrol and electricity companies, to give up one carbon credit for every tonne of carbon dioxide they emit. The annual supply of credits is capped, and the government sells them at quarterly auctions.

The money used to be ring-fenced for things like retiring coal boilers and helping towns adapt to extreme events, but that won't be the case under the coalition.
