Now I just wanna know whether GNU is Guh-noo or Juh-noo or Gee-en-yoo

[-] adjectivenoun@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

I haven't used Linux regularly since 2006, which either means I'm out of the loop or an ancient bearer of lost knowledge:

I think it's "G'noo" like "G'day" or "G'night."

[-] CheesyFox@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 2 days ago

except it's derived from Linus's name, which in finnish is pronounced as Lee-noos, so technically it should be Lee-noox.

In reality tho? Nobody cares

[-] manuremy@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I just say liinus. Or liinuksi.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 days ago

It’s pronounced like Liminiux. Lominoliux is also acceptable.

[-] CheesyFox@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 2 days ago

actually, it's lomi-lominux

That's the thing, his pronounciation there is eerlie similar to what I'm used to spanish (where it is pronounced just as it is spelt) that my ol brain kind of does a short-circuit and can't assimilate the fact that it's just kind of the same thing in both languages and if it's in the middle of a sentence I have to go back to speaking my crappy non-native english

[-] sik0fewl@piefed.ca 6 points 3 days ago

Not sure if this helps, but in English (my native language), I would pronounce it with a short “i”, like in “sit”. You could also pronounce it with a Spanish “i” (same as Finnish “i” to my ears). I would not pronounce it with a long English “i” because the vowel length is too long and doesn’t sound right.

[-] maltasoron@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 days ago

It always surprises me how much the pronunciation of Finnish and Dutch resemble each other.

LIH-nucks (rhymes with "tin bucks").

[-] eatham@aussie.zone 11 points 3 days ago

It is pronounced like that but they don't rhyme at all

[-] Axolotl_cpp@feddit.it 4 points 3 days ago

I think it's /ˈlɪn.əks/ It's horritic tho, tbh

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

2. Be civil
  • Understand the difference between a joke and an insult.
  • Do not harrass or attack users for any reason. This includes using blanket terms, like "every user of thing".
  • Don't get baited into back-and-forth insults. We are not animals.
  • Leave remarks of "peasantry" to the PCMR community. If you dislike an OS/service/application, attack the thing you dislike, not the individuals who use it. Some people may not have a choice.
  • Bigotry of any kind will not be tolerated. This is an LGBTQ+-friendly community -- if that is a problem for you, you should leave.
