President Donald Trump spent early Tuesday night making desperate phone calls and blasting Fox News before midterm election results came in.

“I have the ultimate power — it’s called ‘veto,’” President Trump told CBS News in a phone interview before polls first began to close in some states. Already, Trump appeared to make excuses for a potentially massive Republican loss.

Trump also called the Financial Times, assuring reporter Edward Lucas that the U.S. has no immediate plans to strike Iran, the Middle East country Trump started a war with in February.

Trump had a particular grudge against Fox News Tuesday night, texting commentator Greg Gutfeld about his disdain for liberal Fox News commentator Jessica Tarlov.

I've been waiting for this for a decade.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 28 points 4 hours ago

This is just the tease.

What we've been waiting for is impeachment, removal and prosecution.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 1 points 9 minutes ago

No impeachment. Then Vance takes over, and has a chance to normalize MAGA. Going into 2028, we need Trump pissing off everybody, so we can have a Blue Wave in 2028, like we did yesterday.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 11 points 3 hours ago

No.

Don't impeach him, destroy his Project 2025 agenda first.

Get gas prices down, get food prices down, end the Iran War.

If you impeach the GOPs can play the 'it was just about Trump' card and come back.

If the Dems show they can actually lead, it kills the GOP forever.

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 18 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Not only do I seriously doubt he’ll be impeached, I’m quite certain there aren’t enough votes in the Senate to remove him if he does get impeached. it will be a monumental waste of time and effort. And it would change very little, because a President JD Vance would not be much better.

Instead, the Democrats should focus the next two years on investigating every single thing Trump, his family, and his cronies have been doing, and putting as many of them in jail as possible and completely neutering Trump for the next two years.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 8 points 4 hours ago

I just don't know.

This cycle revealed that so many GOP candidates absolutely struggled because their base was split. They couldn't dissociate from Trump because the GOP base is the MAGA cult, but they lost all potential independent voters because they had to associate with Trump.

I wonder if there'll be a number of GOP reps who see the writing on the wall and turn on Trump to save their own careers. Trump will certainly not usurp democracy and get his 3rd term now, so they got less to fear.

Hard to say tho. Their behavior after Jan 6th isn't promising

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 10 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

Well, I think it’s a matter of legislative priorities: do the Democrats want to blow their wad using their control of Congress to try to get Trump impeached and then removed? It would be a monumental effort with little chance of meaningful success.

Most Democrats believe it would be a much better expenditure of resources, instead, blow that wad dragging literally everyone else in the Trump administration before an investigative committee and possibly impeaching and prosecuting them instead. There is so very much to go after all of them for, that it would be a real waste of time and effort to let everyone else go just so they could go after Trump and probably not succeed in getting him removed.

Not to mention that it would be far easier to prosecute and possibly jail Trump after he is out of office.

[-] BremboTheFourth@piefed.ca 3 points 2 hours ago

It is not a question of going after Trump's cronies or Trump himself. Not only are they obviously complimentary goals, but there is no "wad" to blow. Political capital is not the type of game where you spend a set amount of points and once those are gone, you need to wait for your next turn. They have serious momentum now; they have constituents waiting with baited breath to see if anything actually comes of voting en masse, and they need to be impressed.

Push harder for the release of the Epstein files. Push harder to immediately end hostilities with Iran. Prosecute Trump AND his allies, removing as many of them from office as possible. And still pass legislation that will tax the rich and help people make ends meet. These are all the things they got elected for, they can all be addressed simultaneously, and failure to do so will result in depressed turnout and bad outcomes in 2028.

[-] Th4tGuyII@fedia.io 9 points 4 hours ago

Honestly. Agreed.

While in office Trump is essentially immune to consequences - there's very little point in trying to go after him again.

But his administration and DOJ have been doing some very blatantly corrupt things for a while now, and their only safeguard was the Republican Congress refusing to do anything about it.

Now that the entire Congress is in Democrat hands, they're vulnerable - so going after them and essentially neutering Trump's tirade against democracy for the rest of his administration certainly seems the best path forward.

Though we've got the next two years to find out what's gonna go down.

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 8 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

You ain’t just whistlin’ Dixie.

Trump 2.0 was so much worse than Trump 1.0 because this time around he surrounded himself by a cadre of sycophant enablers. Going after all of them will be easy, Pickens, and it’s not as if they don’t all belong in jail, too. Especially that Pete Hegseth motherfucker. I’m perfectly happy for Congress to impeach his ass. and then, of course, prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 hour ago

Also they may be able to go after Musk for his doge bullshit, ideally they strip him of his shares, properties, and citizenship so as to ship his sub human ass back to South Africa broke as a popper.

[-] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

And their replacements will have to be confirmed by a Democratic senate.

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 3 points 2 hours ago

this also means no new Trumpy Supreme Court justices

[-] artyom@piefed.social 3 points 3 hours ago

I’m quite certain there aren’t enough votes in the Senate to remove him if he does get impeached. it will be a monumental waste of time and effort

What's changed since the last 2 impeachments? Other than a littany of additional crimes?

[-] dudeface@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago

Or they could just work to making things better

[-] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 11 points 3 hours ago

No, they need to send a very clear signal in the US so this shit doesn't happen again, or at least not for another couple decades.

They probably won't, but they should

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 1 points 3 hours ago

No.

If they impeach again then the GOPs can play the 'they have nothing but hatred' card.

Let him sit in his ugly ballroom and watch as the country gets rebuilt.

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 1 points 4 hours ago
[-] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 1 points 4 hours ago

I think that's the plan.

[-] Buffalox@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

And then Americans think the Republican party is restored to "normal", and vote for an equally insane Republican again in 6 or 10 years.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Which is why we gotta keep primarying out establishment Dems and replace them with DSA candidates people will be passionate to vote for.

We just proved AIPAC and billionaires can't buy Dem seats nearly as effectively as they once could

[-] femtek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 hours ago

Prosecution at the heage would be the best.

[-] HazardousBanjo@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

I agree but idk if the establishment Dems would allow it.
