Who the fuck still does holidays with their MAGA relatives?

I've barely spoken to most of my family for two years. It's really quiet.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Well...

I get what you're saying, I really doi also thinknits a really bad idea.

I've been seeing people banishing "the cazies" for like 3 decades now from Internet fora and I've been saying from the start that this will only breed bigger and bladder crazies. When with "us", we can ground them and avoid them going full retard. When we banish them, they will join together in some other place where they can make the rules themselves, breeding much worse crazies. The same goes IRL.

I've been seeing exactly this I've rthe past decades, crazies joining together and becoming a much bigger, such worse problem to handle.

Again, ibget your point but I'd rather have a crazy on a figurative leash where they can be controlled and stopped from iharming themselves or others, than crazies running wild

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I don't disagree with your point overall, but there do seem to be plenty of kids that grow up despising their conservative parents' positions on politics. The question of whether they even want to spend time with their conservative family even implies this.

It's also possible that they will be the last person they'd listen to, since conservative families can have a lot of contempt for each other and care more about the hierarchy than who is right.

But that said, I fully agree that just cutting off people for being awful ends to driving them into the arms of other awful people. And if there's a lot of it, it can do things like get Trump elected because they are tired of being treated like the bad guys but get galvanized instead of discouraged.

It's also the goal of the divide and conquer strategy the ruling class is using to make us easier to manage.

The many people that can't afford living out of their parents' basement

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 day ago

Can't afford moving out of it?

Yeah, outside of their parents' basement

[-] Elgenzay@lemmy.ml 21 points 1 day ago

To "live out of" can mean to live in, that's what confused them

Most healthy members of society dude 😭

[-] edible_funk@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Yes, healthy members of society spend time with their pedophile supporting extending family. Right.

[-] Voixe2@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

I am not weak enough to give up on someone. Every meeting is a chance to educate them

[-] edible_funk@lemmy.world 1 points 23 hours ago

Holding people accountable for their horrible views isn't weak. What a weird take.

[-] bold_omi@lemmy.today 0 points 23 hours ago

Every meeting is a chance to educate them.

As long as you use that opportunity to try to educate them, instead of inviting them over without holding them accountable.

Right? When my extended family gets together there are like 40 of us. I might try to avoid the ones that are MAGA, or at least avoid talking politics with them, but I’m not gonna refuse to go to Christmas or Thanksgiving just because my chuddy uncle is going to be there. I’ll just take a walk with the other queer cousins and get a little toasted before dinner

[-] bold_omi@lemmy.today 1 points 23 hours ago

I would, were I you, use that time to hold them accountable for their politics of hate. I see that as the morally correct action.

I'm not gonna refuse to go to Christmas or Thanksgiving just because my chuddy uncle is going to be there.

Nor would I, in most cases. Were the celebration with mostly MAGA family, I would consider not attending.

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 27 points 1 day ago

Must be nice for only some of them to be MAGA.

When they're all MAGA, though, sometimes it's best to just not go.

Aww the cousin walk <3

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

My family extended to just 1st cousins is more than 80 people. Every single last one full maga Christo-fascists. Not worth being around.

Yeah, super healthy to go hang out with people who want people like you bashished from society because of who you want to love 🙄

[-] Schmoo@startrek.website 9 points 1 day ago

How "healthy" it is to attend holiday gatherings with your family depends entirely on your family's chud ratio.

[-] oatscoop@midwest.social 5 points 1 day ago

Not conservative, not "republican": MAGA.

My MAGA relatives are some of the worst human beings I've met. Hateful, loud, dumb bigots that seem unable to act like a decent human being for more than a few minutes at a time. I've heard the shit they've let slip out and they meant (and mean) every word.

They're not welcome in my home and I am sure as shit am not wasting my time on them.

That's the weird thing. There's millions of people who would never hurt anybody up close and personal, but happy to keep hurting people far away by their choices. The same disconnect often applies to the negative consequences that hit them.

In those cases, if they're family, and you're used to seeing them, you can find yourself having superficially friendly interactions, they will be genuinely happy to see you, etc... And they will vote for death camps without a single pang of conscience because it seems like the normal thing they've always done.

I don't think they're the majority, but they're certainly numerous enough to be the primary enablers of a fascist takeover.

The ‘white moderate’

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Yep... and the only way we de-normalize it is to quit passively allowing it.

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 day ago

I get dragged with. Really debating putting my foot down on the Mega church visit this Christmas though. Such a vile place.

[-] bold_omi@lemmy.today 2 points 23 hours ago

If you want to go to a church on Christmas, you should go to a legitimately Christian church. Regardless of whether you want to go to church on Christmas, you should avoid Christofascist churches. Christofascism is antithetical to Christianity.
