I'm no contact with my conservative relatives. My family is shattered over politics and will never have a large family gathering ever again.

My family is shattered over many things, hatred, queerphobia, racism, misogyny, lust for violence, supporting pedophilia, supporting genocide. The magats can frame it as "politics", but I'll call it out for what it is.

I would never disown a family member over politics.

Most of my family are Alberta separatists so political in my case

Those people are largely those same descriptors you said too though lol

I'm not surprised. I have never met a conservative that isn't. The world over, it's never synonymous with equality, understanding, support, and acceptance.

They are all closet gays who hate themselves and need therapy. Usually past sexual trauma.

I spend atleast an hour each week trying to convince my mom UFOs are almost always light reflecting off shit. It's been 20 years. When people believe in the mystery more than the reality it's hard to change their minds.

Today was "But your uncle saw 3 lights in a triangle pattern over the golf course and they just disappeared!" ... The golf course just off to the side of the flight path of a major international airport. Said golf course is on a hill with a river at the bottom. It was a plane landing or taking off ffs.

My conservative aunt, a registered nurse, still believe that if women eat cottage cheese enough when pregnant they can influence the outcome of the gender.

“Something to do with the lactic acid” or some shit.

Anyways, my repeated assertions, backed by her license and degree and testing she took (and one of her text books I pulled of her shelf) that shows that chromosome is deposited by the male … well.

It’s no wonder she also believes that “empty oil wells refilling” isn’t actually “improved technology making that bit that wasn’t economically viable before now economically viable” and/or high pressure seepage but rather “the hand of god providing for his people”

Anyways. She doesn’t get my delicious turkey this year, they aren’t coming … something to do with being a little bitch.

UFO believers in 2026 are somewhat hilarious to me. You mean to tell me we have thousands of ultra high resolution satellites around the globe, every airspace is fully mapped for security reasons, we are actively working on astronomy for the entire observable universe, measuring gravitational waves from things millions of lightyears away, and you think we'd miss some alien airplanes hovering in our clouds?

Jokes on you! I cut everyone off and went full NC! 🫶🏻✌🏼

Mine are too delusional for it to matter. They'll just talk amongst themselves about how it was rigged and how the country is doomed.

And I'll just hide away in my room because I'm not interacting with that.

[-] HalfSalesman@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

I don't visit the rightwingers of my family and the leftwingers of my family don't really intermix with them so I'm spared even having to talk to them.

Actually, there is one "both sides bad" centrist that I get along great with, my brother. I think his politics are very dumb but he is genuinely a well intentioned person. I feel like a hypocrite for tolerating him though considering my lack of patience for anyone else with similar politics.

I suppose maybe I'll really see once he finds out I'm trans. Don't know if I'm coming out this Thanksgiving though. It wont be obvious by then so I likely will fall under the radar.

I welcome anyone to come to the good side and encourage the healthy policies that work and people want them when asked about them.

[-] Regrettable_incident@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago

Just don't go, if it's that bad. Make an excuse, do something else, even if it's alone. Might be better for all concerned.

My uncle already had a nervous breakdown talking to me while collecting my rent.

Oh well.

[-] echo@lemmy.today 97 points 1 day ago

Who the fuck still does holidays with their MAGA relatives?

I've barely spoken to most of my family for two years. It's really quiet.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

Well...

I get what you're saying, I really doi also thinknits a really bad idea.

I've been seeing people banishing "the cazies" for like 3 decades now from Internet fora and I've been saying from the start that this will only breed bigger and bladder crazies. When with "us", we can ground them and avoid them going full retard. When we banish them, they will join together in some other place where they can make the rules themselves, breeding much worse crazies. The same goes IRL.

I've been seeing exactly this I've rthe past decades, crazies joining together and becoming a much bigger, such worse problem to handle.

Again, ibget your point but I'd rather have a crazy on a figurative leash where they can be controlled and stopped from iharming themselves or others, than crazies running wild

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 23 hours ago

I don't disagree with your point overall, but there do seem to be plenty of kids that grow up despising their conservative parents' positions on politics. The question of whether they even want to spend time with their conservative family even implies this.

It's also possible that they will be the last person they'd listen to, since conservative families can have a lot of contempt for each other and care more about the hierarchy than who is right.

But that said, I fully agree that just cutting off people for being awful ends to driving them into the arms of other awful people. And if there's a lot of it, it can do things like get Trump elected because they are tired of being treated like the bad guys but get galvanized instead of discouraged.

It's also the goal of the divide and conquer strategy the ruling class is using to make us easier to manage.

Once you get older this stuff becomes really stupid. You realize that time wasted is a great loss to you.

There comes a point where you have to be able to stand your ground in silence. You have to realize you cannot change others. You must accept who you are and once that happens, these arguments and the frustration that comes with hearing odd opinions disappear.

If it bothers you, it's because you want others to believe what you believe and why is that? For right or wrong, do you really believe a world can come to fruition where we only have bliss, peace, and love?

How do you even measure those things once the balancing act of right and wrong no longer exists?
