Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Our 3-yearly safety audit today. Wish me luck!

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Good luck with that :)

What industry, if you don't mind me asking?

[–] Axisential 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Cheers - Adventure Tourism.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Ooh Safety sounds really important then! (Not that it's ever not :) )

[–] Axisential 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Hahah, yes indeed - and very much in the spotlight at the moment with the ongoing Whakaari shenanigans.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 3 points 11 months ago

Yeah when I think about it, as a consumer I put a lot of faith in the operator to be doing the right things. Something you don't really think about until something like that happens.

Again, hope it all goes through smoothly :)

Good luck! Don't forget your hard hat!

Goddamn daylight saving, no wonder I felt so tired this morning.

[–] catsdoingcatstuff 3 points 11 months ago

My coworker suggested I try his life hack of getting up 10 minutes earlier every day last week. It was absolutely miserable, but I actually think it was better than the full one hour switch on Sunday. Could be the sleep deprivation talking though.

Looking to get a new WiFi Mesh system, and debating between a few options. Would love to hear some feedback/thoughts from people around them.

Currently been looking at the Netgear Orbi RBK760S, Orbi RBK852 or TP-Link Deco XE75.

We'll be on just normal fibre. Could potentially upgrade to Gigabit Fibre in the near future, but I don't see us going for Hyperfibre anytime soon.

We've got a Ubiquiti dream machine pro with two access points at home, they make good gear. When we have the spare money, I'm also going to add some cameras to the system.

[–] idanoo 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah Ubiquiti get some shit online by so-called professionals, but I have a UDM-SE with a U6-Pro AP and it's great. Been contemplating getting a U6-Enterprise just for the Wifi 6E.

I personally don't like the Mesh systems, I'd rather have all AP's wired in, but I get sometimes you can't just run cables

[–] NoRamyunForYou 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, unfortunately it would be quite a big job to get everything wired in. My partner games a bit, but nothing crazy, and probably the most intensive thing I do is live stream sports.

It is my understanding that using "Tri Band" Mesh systems would help with stability and latency? Would that be correct?, or is there no real difference from that front, and the Tri vs Dual is more around bandwidth.

[–] idanoo 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah - It does sound like the mesh system may be your best approach in that case. They have come a long way since I last tried them

[–] NoRamyunForYou 1 points 11 months ago

Mmmmm, just trying to decide now whether a cheaper mesh system will do, or forking out for a higher spec one will perform better in terms of stability and ping.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

What Access Points are you using?

[–] Ilovethebomb 2 points 11 months ago

Just the cheapest Ubiquiti ones.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I guess the other option would be to get a cheaper Mesh system for wifi coverage, but have a Powerline for my partner for her gaming, but reading up on some things online, not too sure about their performance either.

[–] eagleeyedtiger 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Does she need low latency for the type of gaming she does? How big is the area you’re needing to cover?

Personally I just ran an Ethernet cable from the switch in the garage and dropped it through a small hole in the corner of the ceiling where my desktop is. It’s ugly but easy enough to fix up in future when I have to move it out of there. We have a centrally placed AP that covers our house.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

We're in a two storey house, each storey being 110m2. But the first floor is made of Concrete Blocks, and unfortunately the Fibre comes in through one corner of the house, and her computer is on the diagonal opposite corner of the house.

I believe she currently dabbles in a bit of LoL and mostly Lost Ark.

[–] eagleeyedtiger 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That's tough. Unfortunately mesh wifi will add latency as you're adding hops inbetween you and your router. I haven't used any of the new mesh networking gear, so can't add much on the gaming front.

Might pay to get a quote for a couple of ethernet runs from a data cabling company, just to see how it compares to buying a higher end mesh system. You might get away with a single AP for each floor for less. For comparison ours is an older UAP-HD which is only 802.11ac but covers pretty much all our 160m2 house, but we're not concrete block.

[–] NoRamyunForYou 2 points 11 months ago

Hmm might have to do some more thinking then. Thanks for the insights. Will think about the cabling as well 👍
