We have to nip this cancer in the bud. We have to take this stuff seriously because the infection that is right wing white supremacist ideology is only going to spread further into our society.

Can I hope that this is just a minor party proposing a bill they know won't go anywhere in order to pander to their supporters?
I hope so.
The problem is that it emboldens the loud racist sexist segment of society that's it's pandering to; e.g. our (grand)parents who still complain about "all the Asians" or "the Murrays" or anyone else who "bludges money from the gummint".
I don't mind so much about pandering to the grand parents, but the worrying trend is that NZ First are finding support with the young as well.
That's how it starts. This is how they move the overton window. One failure at a time until they succeed.

Winston has been against preferential treatment based on race, gender or ethnicity for a very long time, so I don't think it's fair to say he is following Trump.
I wish he'd stop saying woke though, he sounds like an absolute fool.
I guess that's fair to say, but doesn't mean he's right.
For example, the legislation would amend Section 44 “to remove the Public Service Commissioner’s duty to develop a workforce that reflects societal diversity”.
That seems like a good thing to have in the Public Service? I mean I'd love to see proof that any old unqualified person off the street are getting public service jobs because of their race or gender? Allowing for diversity isn't the same as hiring unqualified applicants, considering they are serving a diverse public.
Look at all the mates John Key hired to top ranking government positions. They weren't the most qualified, they were just friends of John.

One downside to those programs, in my view, is if someone is a minority working in one of those organisations, but is genuinely there on their own merits, there's a possibility of them being thought of as a "diversity hire" regardless.
Seems like an odd thing to worry about. I would worry more about all those pakeha getting jobs only because they are mates or the guy in charge or went to the same school as them or because they like the same team.

It's possible because kiwis are racist.
When they see a brown person working at a job they don't think "this person had to work much harder than a white person to overcome the racism in this country to get this job" they think "A brown person can never be qualified for this job so they got it because a white person felt sorry for them or was forced to hire them because of DEI".
In mean time the HR manager is throwing away every CV with a name (s)he doesn't recognise as being European.
I don't deny there is lots of casual racism here. I'm originally from south east asia but grew up here and experienced it from all colours of people. However, it's definitely a lot less now that I'm older or maybe because there are many more migrants here than there was 30 years ago. Although the name thing rings true in some regards, especially with chinese/indian/muslim sounding names, a lot of times they assume they can't speak English. I'm lucky enough that my name isn't particularly asian sounding, and I'm sure I've landed job interviews in the past because of it.
