It can still have positive and negative lingering effects but focus on the big picture for a moment

Say sorry to your spouse even if it logically it doesn't make any sense to do so. It often fixes everything, because they want their feelings validated and not facts.

This video sums it all up LOL. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EDhdAHrOg

Several.

If someone asks "what would you say if I asked you out?", they're asking you out.

A closed mouth didn't get fed - meaning you had better ask for what you want. The worst thing that can usually happen is your are denied.

Take big risks when you're young and can recover. When you're older, risks are, well, riskier.

If someone talks to you about other people behind their back, you can bet they talk about you too.

When people tell you who they are, believe them.

You're never going to reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into. Most people don't make decisions based on logic, and explaining things to them doesn't make a difference. You can't "educate" people enough to change their minds. Explaining things to them on the internet doesn't do SFA. People in general aren't rational actors. Most people believe what they believe because it's what "Their people" believe, whomever they define as "Their People." They change their minds when they risk losing something or someone that matters to them if they don't. Fear of rejection is how most people decide what's right or wrong, not logic. If you want to change minds, be someone they don't want to live without. Do your best to make rational choices for yourself, but if you're trying to convince other people, don't argue, it's not going to do anything.

Every lesson I learned the hard way.

If you ever have the opportunity to learn from someone else's mistakes, do it. The reason most people don't is because that usually involves listening to someone else and taking their advice and many people aren't willing to do that.

I think there's more to it. The advice given never conveys the struggle it took to learn the lesson. It's just the end lesson. So, the lesson seems contrite.

Also, you can't tell anyone who's just fallen in love anything. They just won't listen. That's a drug no one can reason with.

Even if it feels like someone loves you, it is possible that they don't

You can only control your own actions.

By failing to get a job that I was the most qualified applicant for, then having a mentor (who was one of the people already in that role) help me understand why I didn't get it. I was steaming mad. It wasn't fair, it wasn't reasonable, but it wasn't something that I could control either. I could only choose how I dealt with it.

Why didn't you get it? Seniority? Nepotism? Rotten capful of yogurt left in someone's locker? :o

[-] BlameThePeacock@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Nepotism. A friend of people who already had that role got it.

I was working in a summer camp, the one you stay for the week. There was this running gag that I could eat an infinite amount of nuggets, I could out eat the kids etc. 3-4 weeks in my boss-cook is real angry at me, turns out she cannot eat nuggets since the start of the camp because of the running stupid gag. Realise that my actions affect others and felt bad for a good time after it. The next week I didn’t bring the gag up
