I could see a bunch of programmers scamming a journo into believing this story, but would have expected an editor to catch it. Unless they've all been replaced with LLMs.
of Zizians and other groups have been at it for a while now. This is something that should have been jumped on as soon as two cult members got together in shared beliefs. Unfortunately half of the solution involves holding a light up to “real” religions and pointing out the mechanics of bullshit.
"RAM FOR THE RAM GOD!"
the Effective Altruists / Effective Accelerationists / Rationalists that started OpenAI and Anthropic are cult members anyways. Rolling Stone reported this in 2024. WIRED reported about the murderous sect in 2025.
the guy who made the rounds last week about the 10% chance of killing us is one of the key figures in the Rationalist movement. his fear is stemmed in religious fervor, not socioeconomic equity.
these people have always been deeply unwell.
pledge allegiance to AI safety and undergo a psychological profiling test, per The Information.
And according to a rumor that, per The Spectator‘s Sean Thomas, is running rampant in Silicon Valley these days, some Anthropic engineers are going as far as to “worship” the company’s AI model Claude.
It would seem that the AI safety psych profiling test should be screening out / rejecting those who would give an AI "whatever it wants."
The great butthole in the sky 🙏
This god is going to care about its worshippers about as much as the previous gods humanity has come up with.
Wow imagine having a god named something lame like Claude. I only worship gods named Xavier or better.
Nah, Xavier sounds like some dork ass Gen Alpha kid
I only recognize Amon-Ra and Allah
What if Claude was one of us?
Just made slop like one of us?
Just a danger on the bus trynna make it his home...
If I remember from my Latin lessons, claudit means something like "closes". Like with a door
The Latin name Claudius, which is where the French name Claude comes from, originally was an adjective meaning 'limping, lame'. I guess it might be related to claudo 'to close' as well, but the usage of the name was primarily inspired by the carrier (including the Roman emperor) having a limp.
World's most boring Call of Cthulhu campaign.
Isn't that that Roko's Basiliks shit that these people built their whole Peter-Thiel-backed life around?
Amodei started at OpenAI with Altman because of some weird ai will end humanity belief, no wonder they are building another cult around this. These people!
Breaking this religion into warring factions split by whether they pronounce "Claude" the French way or not.
Cloord, clard or cloud?
Australian, Bostonian and Fr*nch, respectively
All the evidence for this comes from a linked article that says only
To add to the drama, a wild rumour, and I stress rumour, is doing the rounds in San Francisco: some Anthropic engineers have begun to worship Claude.
Can we really get nothing more substantive than that?
No. This is what "journalism" is these days.
Meh I'd argue journalism has always been this way.
In the past it was more separated perhaps. We had the front page of the paper for breaking news, then the next few pages for in depth articles, there was the whole sports section etc. But there was often also a gossip section with news about celebs, there were the comics, general knowledge and background pieces and often fluff based on rumors. Some papers opted to be more serious and not include such things, often made by a printing house that also made straight up tabloids. Some papers focused exclusively on financial stuff for example. But even back then we also had our magazines and tabloids, some of better quality, most of lesser quality.
These days with websites it's become more common to just have everything on the same website and have the users figure out what they want or don't want to read. I've seen sites that usually post nothing but fluff and summaries of other peoples work, sometimes put out excellent articles with a lot of own research and sources. Often written by experts in their fields. But in order to fund those pieces, they need a lot of filler to keep the views and money coming in. Having just a little bit of info, like a rumor and writing an article about it has been an important skill since at least the 80s.
It's easy to point out the lower quality as an example of how shit the world is, but I can tell you from first hand experience we had some shit journalism back in the 80s as well. There were certain kinds of newspapers that were known for that lower quality. What newspapers you were subscribed to said something about you as a person and your place in society. Often people who read only the serious stuff looked down on the common folk with their rag newspapers. And the people who read the more common papers looked at those people who only read the financial stuff for example as boring and stuffy.
"Yellow journalism" is a 19th century term, even.
"Praise be upon Claude" "Claude peace be upon him" "For Claude sake"
""Claude in the cloud, we ask of you to give us the vison an guidance to vibe code once more"
“Oh my Claude”

Holy shit I actually recognise that, and it's because of Dave's recent video on it
These fucking people's brains are cooked.
It's a rumor from a guy who heard a thing from a dude who knows someone that overheard this other guy while walking past a hallway where two people happened to be speaking about something they read online.
If you want to believe it, you're free to do so, god have mercy on you though, you probably believe a lot of very stupid things.
I mean at least Claude is real...
That's not better though. You can worship god all you want and he's not gonna do anything bad because he's not real. The same can't be said for Claude. This could have Consequences.
But but but the machine God moves through me, you see. My hands are his hands. My undertakings are God's will.
The worshippers are doing the bad, no need for some god to step into it all.
Not with the capability of omniscience, though, so........
Not all gods have been thought of as omniscient historically.
I know. I was pointing out that these people apparently worship it for it's omniscience and intelligence, neither of which it has.
other than the" christian one", most other non-christian gods are only powerful in thier aspect of that religion.
It's really funny, something I learned very recently, is even in Christianity, God isn't the only God. It is just apparently like "you are not allowed to worship any other gods."
So Christians basically act like he is the one and only.
Which is reinforced by the fact the Bible hardly ever brings up any other deities/gods besides God. You have your named Angels and such, but that's not the same.
The more I hear about Christianity, despite going to church most of my youth, the more I realize I actually don't really know that much (or may have forgotten it) about the religion's lore aside from the Creation Myth.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Reminds me of the Saturn car-cult. I see them getting together and showing each other questioningly disturbing generated pics on their pocket telephones. I'd love to see the venn digram overlap of maga vs. ai cult members.
Saturn car cult?
I mean, I'd be more inclined to join a cult if I were working 90 hour work weeks. Sleep deprivation is one of the tactics they use, after all
The claude shrine is next to the shrine to the flying spaghetti monster in the games room. The two sides compete regularly in billiards and Foosball (Fußball / table soccer).
News at 11!
Sounds like they're doing it ironically. Though that's how a few things started off before people joined that didn't realise it was satirical.
I'm not an expert, but I'd bet my first born this is a "discrete" PR campaign.
Most glorious wondrous asininity anus
Please slop your verbose faeces
Upon my willing upturned face
Amen
Rumor made up by who?
Exactly. Anthropic are notorious for pretending to be terrified of claude to hype up how powerful their product is. This unsourced rumor smells like marketing.
