I have so many questions. How does it differentiate customers? Like say I'm standing in line just off to the side behind someone buying a few big ticket items, when the face scan happens how will it know which face to charge? Same question for a couple people checking out together. Will I have to take my hat and sunglasses off to check out or does it use other technologies to build face maps like lidar? What if I got a broken nose or fractured orbital, can I just not buy things? What about beards, if a guy scans his face initially with a beard and shaves it, how will the system respond? Is there an upper limit on purchases made this way like there is with tap to pay? What will it do about age verified products like tobacco or alcohol?

I would bet money they didn't test for any of that and if they did it would be within very narrow parameters.

Bro, don't kill the vibes with all of this very real world shit that will actually happen. Just smile for the camera and it will all be over soon.

[-] Peppycito@sh.itjust.works 8 points 3 weeks ago

Yes, these are all problems that will be solved very, very quickly once this launches and totally fails and we never hear about it again.

[-] dalakkin@lemmy.world 25 points 3 weeks ago

How will they handle twins or people who looks very close to each other?

[-] Eq0@literature.cafe 22 points 3 weeks ago

How easy is it to use it to scam people? If I smile in public, can I get photographed and that used to pay things? Is a smiling photo the next “they stole my card”?

Can we all just carry around a photo of Bezos, Musk, or a Rothschild or Rockerfeller, or CEOs of insurance companies, etc?

The Intuit Dome in LA already does this. You grab food/drinks and it automatically charges you based on your face. And you guessed it, there have been many complaints about people getting charged for something they didn’t get. I’m never stepping foot inside that venue.

Does it work with black people? Theres a bit of a history with facial recognition training and varying features.

[-] Obituarykidney@lemmy.world 37 points 3 weeks ago

Didn't apple get sued because a Chinese woman's sister could unlock her phone?

... Just googled it and there's multiple cases with Chinese users, including a coworker and a woman's son.

[-] isVeryLoud@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago

I wonder if there's a technical reason or just lack of neural network training on some communities.

I'm specifically thinking of the nose bridge and cheeks area of people with some Asian relatives in their gene pool. The sunken nose bridge and puffy cheeks appearance is so prevalent that a lot of prescription glasses are sold as "Asian fit" so that it clears the cheeks. My partner is half Laotian and half white/Hispanic, and she needs Asian fit glasses despite not looking particularly Asian.

I'm wondering if their facial recognition software focuses too much on the shape of the middle of the face, which could lead to close Asian relatives, who share a lot of the same genes, to be scanned as the same person as they may have the exact same nose-cheek area shape.

Yeah it works great they don't even need to register, the system says they already did.

Heck of a credit card bill, for that one guy. I wonder if theres a sneaky line in the TOS about how "best effort" is good enough and sticks him with the bill anyway.

Isn't Revolut that had a data breach like 10 days ago, leaking costumer data like IBANs etc??

[-] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 26 points 3 weeks ago

Oh don't worry, they leaked your facial data then too

Here in the UK, regular supermarkets are absolutely littered with cameras. Every fart is on record. It's insane.

[-] uriel238@lemmy.blahaj.zone 25 points 2 weeks ago

I bet the false positives are through the roof.

Computer says no.

  • you look like someone dodgy

Computer says no.

  • you are flagged as a dissident terrorist

Computer says no.

  • a solar storm broke electronics

Computer says nothing.

My apartment building has a facial recognition system to unlock the door to the building. My cousin got recognized as his brother that was in the system and the door just opened for them.

What a wonderful idea to use the same tech to deal with money.

Cue Zooey Deschanel/Kate Perry/Emily Blunt meme

It's much easier to make you smile than to force you to give up your credit card pin number when being robbed!

[-] MBech@feddit.dk 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

And you don't even need to know you've been robbed. You look at a stranger on the street? Now your bank accounted is empty! How efficient!

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 7 points 3 weeks ago

Cards should have a duress PIN that appears to work and clears the transaction when used, but then immediately locks the account and flags it for fraud investigation.

Fast forward 5 months: massive data breach for everyone that used the system, mischarges from others to your account with no way to get your money back, police and politicians demanding data access without a court order, etc

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 9 points 3 weeks ago

Would be funny if the company is based in French.

Ya know I may be a Californian Redneck but I do at least with my facial features look pretty big standard ethnically Scottish, how many false positives could I trigger with my ugly mug? Regardless get one of those blowtorch lighters and melt the plastic camera lenses on these pieces of absolute detritus.
