Damn, the amount of people who didn't read the article is astounding. They aren't saying Russia is going to full on but instead it'll be small, plausibly deniable stuff like cyber attacks and sabotage.

Danish government still trying hard to justify their recent purchase of stupid expensive American fighter jets, in a time where we should work towards becoming independent of the US.

And making a shit deal for Greenland

[-] SmoothOperator@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

It seems like a decent deal.

This week, Denmark has extricated itself from a period of coercive US diplomacy over Greenland. The agreement announced on 22 September elegantly resolves the dispute over the territory, without forcing Denmark or the government of Greenland to give up very much.

According to the Guardian:

Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, and Múte B Egede, the foreign minister, received a hero’s welcome when they landed back in Nuuk from New York on Wednesday night – and a nation took a collective sigh of relief.

Ideally none of this would have happened, and much is still unsure, but it seems like a decent outcome for now.

When a guest, who doesn't give a shit about deals, is open threatening you to invade your home, make it his and kick you out, you give him more of your home (or at least the same) and other concessions where they co-decide who you can invite, share your stuff with and celebrate it?

[-] SmoothOperator@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

I'm not sure that analogy fits the situation.

There's a difference between everyday "fairness" and pragmatic international diplomacy - but to answer your question, yes-ish? The Chatham House article at least argues that this deal indeed represent a succesful way to stand up to a bully.

[-] spacegoat@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

I’ve been hearing this for 20 years

[-] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

That's just dumb fearmongering. Russia throws all it has against Ukraine and still fails. So what does Putin have left to attack NATO with? Aside from Nukes, obviously.

[-] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 5 points 21 hours ago

I suggest you read the article...

They make it very clear exactly what type of attacks they're talking about.

[-] mysteryhumpf@feddit.org 5 points 22 hours ago

The idea is they wouldn’t launch open warfare against all of nato at once but rather increase attacks with plausible deniability against single weaker member to test alliance resolve and see where the red line is. That way they would destroy NATO by calling into question article five. All the weapons are not so much for actual warfare but to signal to Russia what the consequences would be if they fuck around.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 40 points 1 day ago

Average intelligence could tell you Russia has already struck NATO countries.

[-] P1nkman@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Are you saying Danish intelligence is worse than average intelligence? As a Norwegian living in Denmark, I can verify this statement.

[-] weps@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

they could attack in 2 weeks

[-] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Ah yes, starting a major 2nd front in the dead of winter in the middle of a energy crisis. Why not.

And it's funny how prone these Elon Musk assets are to Russian "sabotage." Almost as if they got a guy on the inside.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I know Putin is desperate but this seems incredibly foolish. Way more than invading Ukraine.

Let's hope they're wrong because it would be disastrous for everyone.

If this is legit they should just assassinate Putin and be done with it. Enough is enough.

[-] magnue@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

When they say "attack a NATO country" it will probably be a drone that 'got lost' or worst case, an 'uprising of local Russian people' in eastern Estonia similar to how crimea / Donbass was annexed. Putin doesn't want war with NATO. He wants to destroy the NATO alliance by testing its resolve.

Imagine like 500-1000 troops annexe 5 square km in eastern Estonia and call it an uprising. Estonia evokes article 5. On the Russian side of the border sits artillery and troops all zeroed in on that 5 square km. Russia makes a statement saying 'any attack on free russian people is an attack on Russia'. What does NATO do?

[-] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago

Putin knows he's in trouble. He will have to double down or fold. And we all know that he's too insane to fold.

[-] Flower@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago

He'd rather be beaten to a pulp by NATO than admit he's losing to Ukraine. He's been provoking NATO into retaliation and calling it an unprovoked attack but they're not biting and are happy to let Ukraine humiliate him some more. The desperate move left is to actually attack a NATO country outright. That it needs to come to this.

[-] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

He'd rather have his entire population beaten to a pulp by NATO you mean. He doesn't give a shit what happens to his people, for as long as he doesn't show a moment of weakness that would result in him falling out of a window.

[-] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

He’d rather be beaten to a pulp by NATO

You seem sure that NATO would respond in a effective way to an attack on any of its allies instead of just calling emergency meetings, strongly opposing things and considering sanctions. Personally, seeing how NATO did absolutely nothing after multiple previous attacks on its members I have my doubts.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

one thing he cant do is look weak to the moscowvites and st petersberg citizens.

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Look, fuck russia sideways with a rusty fork, but I dont think they would attack nato. It would be suicide

[-] ms_lane@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

I think Putin will, but only when he's finally on the ropes with Ukraine or internally.

Then he'll attack NATO in order to provoke a response - the the prospect of full-scale war with NATO (and full mobilisation of the sons and daughters of Moscow and St. Petersburg) will allow Putin to secure a quick peace treaty that will likely force him out of Ukraine, but since it wasn't Ukraine that beat him, but 'all of NATO' he'll be able to avoid the window himself.

[-] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 day ago

We all think they won't attack Ukraine also.

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago

I mean, when the cia under Biden warned it was coming, I felt he was pretty certain. In any case I hope I am right and russia doesn't try to properly attack a nato country

[-] Godric@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Biden warned the world days beforehand, everyone was like this same "yeah bro Russia's attacking tomorrow, haha, for sure bro" until the tanks rolled across the border.

Physically they haven't but politically they absolutely have (Trump et al.)

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world -4 points 1 day ago

Yes they havent "explicitly" targeted a nato country, as per an attack, at least not so intentionally as to cause the other nato countries to respond with direct action.

[-] tehsillz@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Several intelligence agencies are saying it's likely but this Lemmy user doesn't think so. I'm not sure who to believe.

[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

They have all been saying it for months now "oh russia is going to attack soon!" While I cant discount it entirely, its a great way to justify an increase in military spending and conscription. Manufacturing consent. I think we can all hope that it wont happen. Im just giving my perspective, as one does on a platform such as this.

[-] greenbit@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

I get your point. And this year we've learned that wars are mutual plans by the epstein class. Conflict areas are organized for military industries to funnel money and test autonomous weaponry

[-] Malica@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 day ago
[-] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

I still don't think they would attack. It would be MAD all over.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago

Xi Jinping is literally, actually in the fucking White House, right now, and Trump just spent the last week telling Ukraine to stop attacking Russian fuel.

It would be war and they've got a pretty good chance of winning since they've already defeated NATO's largest force.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 day ago

They haven't defeated any forces. Or do you mean the US because Trump wouldn't get involved?

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Correct. Russia and China have effectively defeated the USA portion of NATO because I truly believe Trump and the GOP would refuse summons from an Article 5.

Russia and China are the reason Trump is president.

[-] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 day ago

Maybe. Trump's power is waning, and it's hard to predict exactly what he would do anyway. It's likely democrats will control congress next year and can send aid. If Europe can hold out until 2029, a different president might be more willing to provide active support.

[-] historicaldocuments@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

If Europe can hold out until 2029

Why would anyone who considers Europe an advarsary wait until they rebuild their militaries?

During the first impeachment hearings Dr. Hill said a lot of things that are worth remembering. One of those things is that Russia had a plan for whichever candidate won the trump v clinton election.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

With 53 GOP senators Trump is all powerful in the USA. They already purged the military generals and the rest of the federal government employees.

Resistance is coming from local and state levels which means fuck all for NATO.

[-] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

This is not a worry.

Personally, I think Poland alone would break Russia; probably before anybody else was able to mobilize. They are champing at the bit, they pray Putin does this.

[-] iocase@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Russia is 2 weeks away from attacking a nato country
