The thing they didn't teach is what leads to nazism and how to defeat it. Makes you wonder if that was on purpose...

[-] snoons@lemmy.ca 64 points 1 week ago

I think it's because what defeated them was violence and "violence is bad". Because the problem of nazism definitely could've been solved diplomatically... >.>

[-] frank@sopuli.xyz 23 points 1 week ago

100%.

And on a related note, all of the right wing people who are proud of the US' wartime accomplishments (especially WWII) seem to forget why the US was so good at it. Science and Engineering are the main reasons (okay, scale and being far from a home front [no disrespect Pearl Harbor] top) that the US was so impactful. It's wild that a lot of the people who are particularly proud of developing a devastating bomb are the same people who hate science funding and science itself.

[-] untorquer@quokk.au 7 points 1 week ago

Those and an independent manufacturing / logistics capability far in excess of what the was torn economies were dwindled down to, a recent mass nationalization of infrastructure, social reform creating a dedicated and healthy populace while supporting research funding, massive independent agricultural base, independent energy supply, a military with experience in environments analogous to all fronts...

Basically everything that no longer exists in the US.

Oh and the wealthy paid taxes commensurate with the general pop...

[-] frank@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Yup, absolutely. If a country wanted to "win" in that way again it would basically be by doing the opposite of what the GOP does these days.

Please drill this into your head right now: the facts do not matter.

It's fine to appreciate the irony, but the true prime movers are operating on a whole different level underneath what is being said out loud.

I upvoted your comment, but if you ask yourself why they hate science funding, you'll find the answer(s) very quickly.

[-] frank@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

Yeah, I was much more appreciating the irony here than actually wondering. I know I can't logic them out of a situation they didn't logic themselves into.

[-] defaultusername@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

And what caused it to rise was mass economic struggle of the working class.

[-] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 5 points 1 week ago

And apathy from the left (Russia, KPD)

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

Yeah, even as a kid I could see through this logic. A typical workflow for me in school looked something like this: I get bullied → I stand up for myself → the bully gets violent → I defend myself → we both go to the principal's office and wind up suspended for the same length of time because "violence is bad."

Meanwhile in class I was learning about how our heroic grandfathers stood up to the ultimate bullies and defeated them with... you guessed it, violence.

It made no sense to me then and it makes no sense to me now, because it's illogical. Complete cognitive divorce between "theory" and "practice," or "abstract book knowledge" and "real-world actions/decisions/experience."

The entire US school system is designed around teaching you one thing while ~~encouraging~~ enforcing you to behave otherwise, honestly...

Conservatives can't let people know that nazism is just a flavor of conservatism. They can't have people openly pointing out how every genocide ever commited in human history was caused by conservatives.

Conservatives would rather burn everything to the ground than admit they are all racist, dog-fucking, traitor, pedophile bigots. It's almost like they can feel shame. They can't, but it almost seems like it.

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago

They can't have people openly pointing out how every genocide ever commited in human history was caused by conservatives.

While I'm mostly with you on hating conservatives and being against genocide, the sentence above simply isn't true unless you consider Stalin a conservative. And arguably Mao too, although most of the people he had killed were the same ethnicity as himself. But his explicit goal was to erase an entire culture; it just happened to be the culture he originally came from. Oh an Pol Pot wasn't a conservative, nor the Myanmar military junta.

Honestly we can trash conservatives to our hearts' content for generally being the ones in history to support and perform genocide, but as soon as we make absolute statements like "every genocide ever committed in human history" then we start to weaken our argument, so it's better to patch those holes now in friendly waters rather than waiting till we're surrounded by enemies to notice them. That's why I point it out, not to be contrarian.

Nazism never went away. The Prescott Bushes and Joe McCarthies were always there, pulling the strings of the Nixons and the Reagans.

They were in your schools, in your hospitals, in your commerce. You just never saw them because they were at the upper echelons, rubbing their grubby hands together in satisfaction while looking down on you like a spider watching its prey get inextricably tangled in its web.

In other words, yeah it was on purpose. My theory is that it was their plan all along to make a resurgence now, when the last of the WWII vets and people who remember that era are either dead or in assisted living homes.

Even people who were kids during Nixon are retiring now. The new norm has shifted gradually, decade by decade, and now almost no person still working in the US is old enough to remember the FDR economy.

They played the long game, dude. This is their culminating event.

I got banned from Reddit for saying that the only thing Nazis are good for is target practice.

I am an almost 40 year old white man.. My Grandparents fought the Nazis.

The only good Nazi is a dead Nazi

I got permanently banned from Reddit for saying that Child predators should be killed.

Funny that.

I got permanently banned from Reddit for saying that Child predators should be killed.

I mean, they made admin (or supermod, can't be arsed to remember) a known child-predator enabler and issued bans on anyone complaining; that should have been a sign of where they were going...

i got nuked from reddit because of Emil Nolde of all people. Someone posted his painting on r/museum and i made a comment about the demented irony of his life - he was hardcore nazi but he ended up in Entartete Kunst exhibition - so somehow mods thought that's condoning nazis and breaking the community rules - boom boom boom and here we are.

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I appreciated reddit very very narrowly, and entirely because every time I had a problem, the internet search result for said problem would be a reddit post with the solution. . Which isnt even true anymore, between people having scrambled posts before deleting accounts, and just the passage of time, and due to the friendly, helpful people disappearing.

beyond that interaction with reddit, it was a festering shitpile of hatred, bigotry, and pedophilia, and it continues to amaze me how it maintained such a popular position.

I have been banned from several comms on lemmy for saying very similar things. Most comms seem OK with it, but there are definitely a few conservative mods on lemmy that will protect their own.

Both of those perfectly reasonable opinions unfortunately still fall under reddit's site wide umbrella bannable offenses of "inciting harm or violence." 🫤 I know because I'm here for the same reasons.

Just non-negotiable moral compasses in general. "Yeah, he's obviously an obnoxious racist, chauvinist, paedophile, warmongering, corrupt fascist pig, but have you seen the Dow lately?"

You have to work a little bit harder at them today, but they can still be found.

Dog parks were my favorite place to interact with regulars back when I had a dog. Met lots of good friends and neighbors that way.

Volunteering can be great, too. I sometimes sign up for cooking/prep shifts at a local kitchen that feeds the community, and it's an easy way to hang out with like minded people.

Independent bookstores and libraries are still around, too. They're obviously more common in densely populated urban areas, but if you have them around you they can be great.

When I was a kid it was general knowledge that you don't talk about politics and religion around polite company.

Nowadays I can't go buy a gallon of milk without someone asshole espousing their shitty beliefs to me, completely unsolicited. Motherfucker I don't even know your name, why in the holy fucking hell would I care about how you feel about trans people in sports while we're in the dairy aisle?

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Conservatives love to brag about their various bigotries. Many have even collected the whole set.

Oh yeah. "I'm not vaccinated and neither are my kids." Sorry, I didn't get your name when you introduced yourself to me literally 10 minutes ago and immediately started your increasingly unhinged monologue.

[-] BilSabab@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

it was this weird period of time during mid 2000s when russian propaganda started to really amp up old soviet imperialist narratives (the continuing demonization of Bandera, Holodomor denial, etc etc etc) and lots of folks started to fall for it even though the truth was a google search away. shit was ugly.

[-] Corn@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

the continuing demonization of Bandera

If you find yourself going "Hey actually the figurehead of an organization that was more interested in doing crimes against humanity against ethnic minorities to fight the fucking nazis gets a bad rap" maybe it's time to reevaluate your takes.

Most people know the nazis were bad. They just figure it's because they were german and simplify that belief into nationalism.

We're gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we're in enemy territory, as a bushwhacking guerrila army,

we're gonna be doing 1 thang and 1 thang only...

KILLIN NAZIS.

A Nazi ain’t got no humanity. They’re the foot soldiers of a Jew-hatin’, mass murderin’ maniac & they need to be dee stroyed.

[-] Burn_The_Right@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Hey now! That's not very nice. Conservatives have feelings too. For example they can feel anger and rage and lust for kids and racism. Let's try to show a little respect. (Emphasis on little.)
