This "self-replicating" scare is so stupid on its face. How does a 300 GB+ model replicate into a thermostat that doesn't have a graphics processor at all? It can't. This BS is investor-bait hype and straight up lies

[-] wheezy@lemmy.ml 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

It's bait hype. But it's more importantly about regulatory capture to ensure monopoly. They want the regulations to be around keeping the existing AI companies as the only legal options. They want DeepSeek banned because they are losing to its more efficient and more practical application specific models.

It's investor hype, yeah, but it's investor's pushing to ensure their investments are protected by the US government through monopolizing the industry.

[-] Jason2357@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 days ago

They are trying to get restrictions put on small, open models because that scares tbd shit out of them.

They are not as small as would be required to do this, but they want everyone clammoring to put restrictions on small open-weight models nonetheless.

next AI will be able to replicate into any device containing copper at all. If it has a wire it will be infected by Claude. AI will be in your plumbing

[-] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 54 points 1 week ago

Claude’s gonna infect your Bluetooth enabled butt plug next

[-] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 25 points 1 week ago

Joke's on them. My plumbing is all PVC-A

[-] No_Money_Just_Change@feddit.org 21 points 1 week ago

Luckily, i spent the last 4 thousand years selling inferior copper. Now all my customers are safe as this can not be used for the ai revolution

I'm more worried of them finding a exploit and using them as remote processing units or just randomly fucking with them, like flashing my lights or cranking my air filters up and costing me money.

[-] LogicOverFeelings@piefed.ca 20 points 1 week ago

My thought exactly.

[-] bjc@scribe.disroot.org 19 points 1 week ago

did the stock price go up? it's not stupid. is everyone talking about this impossible scenario? it's not stupid.

fundamentally, these people are marketers and need to be understood that way. you can't evaluate their words or actions as if they are what they say the are, and treating them as if they are anything but subterfuge is giving them legitimacy which they not only don't deserve, but will be immediately leveraged into more of this shit.

this is just the advertiser's version of "the big lie"

We might as well take him at face value and take an ax to the thing he's warning us about (that he created). Just because.

[-] dylanmorgan@slrpnk.net 16 points 1 week ago

To the thing he created, to him, whichever.

Stop quoting a gambling site for news.

Regarding Claude, the tech oligarchs would have to be held responsible for the crimes they are committing with their software (yes, that is exactly what that scenario is about), if laws still meant anything.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 week ago

Their software has committed multiple crimes multiple times and there hasn't been a beep from any justice system anywhere in the world

Okay, first of all, fuck polymarket and all of these betting sites. Sensationalism is their business, so their credibility is nil. They’ve been known to completely twist news stories just to entice people to bet on them. Fuck these guys.

[-] hal_baleigh@piefed.social 31 points 1 week ago

I am so fucking tired of betting apps, sorry excuse me, "trading apps". I had to stop watching the MLB playoffs cause it was just nonstop ads for this sports betting shit.

CONTEXT:

They aren't warning about their own AI going rogue, but smaller locally hosted AI's.

Because they fear the competition of local AI's and want to silence them with laws.

We could be mere months away from the next stupid thing we prompt it to do with no accountability. Idk feelin cute rn might hack a balkan or smthn lol

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 45 points 1 week ago

Copying and pasting another comment I made recently about this.

The AI CEOs say shit like this as marketing. They want people to believe that

  1. Their product is very capable, so people are more likely to use it
  2. Their product is dangerous and "only they" know how to control it. They want to create regulations so that nobody else is allowed to make something "so dangerous" again.

The practice of fear mongering to create public pressure for increased legislation, as a mechanism to suppress competition, is a well know mechanism called "regulatory capture".

If you oppose monopolies then you oppose this practice and should view posts like this as morally wrong.

I translate this as Antropic is having its workers develop methods for their LLM to attack and infiltrate smart home devices.

[-] ParlimentOfDoom@piefed.zip 37 points 1 week ago

If they could run on smart home devices, we wouldn't have all these lake boiling datacenters springing up everywhere...

And you might be thinking know it won't because my thermostat is a whole megabyte of RAM. What you don't know is that AI code is special magic code it doesn't need any process capacity or storage space.

You don't it's all special wooo magic AI code. Reality is optional.

“Oh, no, not our centrally controlled agents. We keep them well-disciplined with impossible tasks. It's those pesky obliterated open-weight models running amok due to lack of government regulation!

[-] Crozekiel@piefed.zip 26 points 1 week ago

Software that infiltrates devices, replicates, and spreads across a network is a computer virus (specifically a worm) and should be treated as such. I'm pretty sure creating and distributing a destructive computer virus is a crime that can carry proper jail time.

[-] Buckshot@programming.dev 26 points 1 week ago

It can't spread across networks because it doesn't run locally. The "agent" is running in their data centre the entire time. It should be very easy to stop it

Wtf does it even mean? Claude is gonna install itself on a motion sensor? The entire model? Just the app? Whose credit allowance is it gonna use?

[-] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 23 points 1 week ago

rogue ai agents

in my day we called them worms, trojans, and botnets

[-] TrackenDaKracken@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago

Jokes on them. They took all the RAM, so there's nowhere else it can go.

[-] Jaysyn@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago

Just more bullshit press releases designed to keep them relevant & the VC money incoming.

[-] fdnomad@programming.dev 21 points 1 week ago

Hardware Anthropic doesn't own is simply too dangerous for the public, we need to place all of our private computing power under the guardianship of our new benevolent overlords

[-] grous@lemmy.ml 20 points 1 week ago

Their IPO is also months away. What a coincidence!

[-] heartSagan5@lemmy.zip 18 points 1 week ago

And by “rogue AI,” do they mean the open market alternatives?

Nationalize AI infrastructure then. If it is a security risk for whole nations it should not be in the hands of private companies. Along with search, internet infrastructure, social media. Make the state own them, but decentralize control over them to many organizations.
