How may eddies for a haul choom?

[-] Flower@sh.itjust.works 29 points 15 hours ago

Cyberpunk Lore predicted much. Stealing hardware from a vehicle convoy was definitely a mission.

[-] EncryptKeeper@lemmy.world 50 points 17 hours ago

Holy shit computer hardware road pirates in the year of our lord 2026. What a wacky world we live in

[-] treadful@lemmy.zip 14 points 15 hours ago

Don't forget datacenters being bombed as military targets.

[-] eicker@lemmy.world 111 points 19 hours ago

Turns out the most profitable AI business model is stealing the hardware before anyone can spend billions teaching it to hallucinate. Wall Street calls that an asset light strategy. Nvidia calls it demand. The thieves call it same day delivery.

[-] cruseo@piefed.world 42 points 19 hours ago

Admit it: you had fun with that

[-] lividweasel@lemmy.world 16 points 18 hours ago

OP is an AI bot, so I doubt any fun was had.

[-] LewdLemon@sh.itjust.works 3 points 18 hours ago

Hell, I had fun with that!

Wall Street calls that an asset light strategy. Nvidia calls it demand. The thieves call it same day delivery.

That's a very AI way of phrasing it.

The profit margins must be great.

From DVD players to GPUs in a generation

[-] Agent641@lemmy.world 2 points 4 hours ago

In that movie they were stealing VCRs, weren't they? Makes me feel a billion years old

[-] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

Stealing VCRs are a gateway drug to becoming an enemy to multiple countries and driving in space.

A new "back to the their roots" fast and furious movie. Instead of A/V gear it's GPUs this time

[-] Carl@anarchist.nexus 8 points 18 hours ago

Damn, beat me to it. The Fast & The Furious truck hijacking is one of my “what part of a movie hasn’t aged well” go-to responses. They were stealing shipments full of millions of dollars of ultra high-end, top-of-the-line, super high-tech… DVD players? The same DVD players that are like $5 for an entire pallet on eBay now?

[-] brackled@lemmy.world 2 points 3 hours ago

Same will hold true for GPUs in 20 years time. People will laugh as they watch from their quantum computers.

[-] MrScottyTay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 hours ago

How does the value of equipment nowadays make it not age well? They were still worth a lot during the time the film is set.

[-] Exeous@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago

I Think this too! Redo fast and furious with GPU!

[-] db2@lemmy.world 17 points 16 hours ago

So they get paid selling the "stolen" hardware and insurance fraud on top of it. And still nobody does anything.

[-] CosmicTurtle0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 22 points 18 hours ago

This is the kind of Robin Hood shit I can get behind.

Steal from people who not only increased prices for the common folks but can easily afford the loss. Give it back to folks who are just trying to live their lives.

Fuck AI.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 26 points 17 hours ago

I mean, it says the thieves are sending the hardware to China. That can mean anything from gaming black market to state-sponsored funneling of hardware to Chinese AI companies. It might be less Robin Hood and more... I don't know, some Jackie Chan movie where Triads are operating in the US and working with a Chinese diplomat to help some mega-corp.

[-] DasSkelett@discuss.tchncs.de 13 points 15 hours ago

I'm sorry, but this is not going to folks trying to live their lives. They couldn't even use the specialized hardware.

[-] willington@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 13 hours ago

I want that to be true, but from the article:

The first instinct is to assume that all of the gear would end up on the second-hand market. But in an additional twist to the story, the thieves already have overseas buyers ready before the heist actually takes place.

Law enforcement officials believe that the gear is slurped up by entities operating in countries under the U.S.' tight AI export controls, including China. Verified Carrier, a platform for vetting carriers, says that this year, it's seen suspicious activity linked with U.S. cargo theft in India, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Colombia, and Moldova. Scott Cornell of TAPA Americas estimates that six to seven out of 10 stolen cargo shipments (data center gear or otherwise) end up overseas.

See? The thieves are just thinking about money, not justice or social balance.

[-] Fizz 2 points 12 hours ago

Give what back? Nothing was taken from people trying to live their lives. This stealing is of datacenter gear.

[-] AbouBenAdhem@lemmy.world 27 points 19 hours ago

grand-theft-GPU

You have to steal the hardware IRL before you can play the game on it.

[-] JangleJack@lemmy.world 18 points 18 hours ago

Things are getting kinda cyberpunk out here in The Sprawl.

[-] Blibittyblah@futurology.today 13 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Gonna be easy to highjack when all autonomous semi trucks take over

[-] notnowimbatin@fedinsfw.app 3 points 15 hours ago

Thieves steal millions dollars worth of shipments by hacking a highway billboard and prompt injecting all the trucks

[-] ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 19 hours ago

Real life fast & furious, but with GPUs instead of DVD players

[-] some_designer_dude@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Time to reboot CHIPS.
