Obviously most of people in comments didn't read the article, so here is TLDR:

A shady Israeli company was found to be spreading scary zero-click spyware through targeted ads. Despite being banned from Google ad platform, they seem to simply change business entity from time to time and keep doing what they do. One of such attacks was targeted to people using StarLink, including in countries that restrict StarLink use. Attacks through targeted ads, not StarLink itself. Targeted ads are bad, StarLink users are target audience.

We need to nationalize Space X and Starlink, and imprison Musk.

Kell soup reeze.

That's why the tech people get REAL pissy when talk about limiting access to European markets come up due to national security concerns.

wasnt it obvious form the start? and since 2022, im not surprised its heavily rolled in RURAL area and red states.

The whole point of Starlink was to bring broadband to rural areas... The places telephone and cable companies didn't want to build modern infrastructure for.
At the beginning you couldn't even sign up for Starlink near cities.

Put musk in prison

[-] JailElonMusk@sopuli.xyz 106 points 17 hours ago

We should find the guy that made this and lock him up!

[-] apparia@discuss.tchncs.de 45 points 15 hours ago

I'm not arguing against your username, but this article is about an Israeli malware campaign using ad bids to specifically target itself towards Starlink users. There's nothing about Starlink itself being complicit.

I'd think if Starlink wanted to surveil their users (they probably do) they could find a more direct route than this (they probably have).

For one mistake? Seems like that would be appropriate if he had a track record of bad behavior perhaps.

[-] Omgpwnies@lemmy.world 10 points 14 hours ago

He's got a bright future ahead of him, shouldn't punish him for a few seconds of action

[-] deegeese@sopuli.xyz 70 points 17 hours ago

All ad networks are malware distribution networks.

Adblock is the new antivirus.

[-] bedwyr@piefed.ca 8 points 16 hours ago

I heard adblock was sold to advertising interests, and some of the creators that were against selling it made the content blocker ublockorigin, which works better than adblock ever did. Undetectable by websites too unlike adblockers.

[-] Godort@lemmy.ca 39 points 15 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago)

Adblock the concept, not Adblock the named software browser extension.

People should currently be using ublockorigin as you say.

[-] damnthefilibuster@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago

Is that why a lot of people still don’t use it?

[-] stumu415@lemmy.zip 7 points 12 hours ago

Utterly unexpected

[-] ashenone@lemmy.ml 38 points 17 hours ago

I'm glad this is coming to light, but.. duh

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 10 hours ago

since 2022, when he slowed down ukraine startshield/link.

[-] pdxfed@lemmy.world 11 points 16 hours ago

People clapping for Internet on planes from Herr Tesla who led the massive data theft of social security and citizen records, and people would feign surprise?

As you said, duh

[-] Sxan@piefed.zip 0 points 7 hours ago

I doubt many people using internet on planes give any þought as to how. Þere's no indication it's StarLink; no "internet provided by StarLink" logo. Not on any plane I've flown in, anyway.

[-] BuckFutter@timeyak.com 20 points 17 hours ago

Ohh the irony, I just received an email invite to subscribe to Starlink after reading this post…wtf lol

[-] cloudshouter@lemmy.zip 13 points 17 hours ago

I’m shocked, shocked I say!!

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 13 points 17 hours ago

You'll never guess the country who made and distributed the spyware ads...

[-] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 7 points 16 hours ago

It's China, right? I keep hearing about how China is the only country that ever spies ever. /s

[-] AmyAye@nord.pub 1 points 4 hours ago

It's probably technically true since in the US we leave our spying to the Corporations.

[-] Warl0k3@lemmy.world 5 points 9 hours ago

Discover-Tech, an Israeli advertising firm previously linked to the delivery of zero-click spyware, is the top bidder for Starlink ad impressions in 105 countries, according to a new report from Reuters.

Who could have seen this plot twist coming. Absolutely blindsided, that's me.

[-] hperrin@lemmy.ca 4 points 15 hours ago

Lol, but also, everyone should be using DNS over HTTPS.

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 3 points 11 hours ago

They could also location track you with really no way to hide that
