I don't care who comes up. Kid, Teen, Adult, you get some fucking candy. You showed up, I'm out here, have a couple of pieces.

Teens get the shit end of the stick, always. There's no lack of activities for kids and tweens. Teens are usually left out of community things.

Build that bridge to the teens in the community; in a couple of years, you'll be dealing with them as beginner adults that'll start out better if you're that neighboor that gave them $0.30 of candy

If you wear a costume, you get candy. I don't care how old you are.

[-] NovaVeles@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Pretty much, you could be 90 years old, enjoy your Milky way.

[-] Bubbaonthebeach@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago

I loved watching the kids in our neighbourhood go from parents carrying them around all the way to teens wondering if they could still dress up and run around like the kids they still were in their hearts. My kids are tall and got a lot of flack once they reached adult height even though they were only 12.

[-] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

Why would I ever deny candy to someone of any age as long as they’re in costume? They’re taking part in the holiday, aren’t they? Insane notion.

[-] Shindo66@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Everyone in my neighborhood always has sooo much candy that they just want to give it away to anyone. The kids in my neighborhood go to the rich neighborhoods just a little farther south. Is 13 and 15 too old to trick or treat?

[-] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Is 13 and 15 too old to trick or treat?

There's no such thing as being too old to trick or treat. If you are in a costume and you are out to have fun and not be an asshole, you get candy.

[-] Zorg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

Definitely not. As long as you have a costume, you qualify for tricky'treating.

[-] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 day ago

The day I am too old for free candy is the day I die.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago

Grownups get candy and a pamphlet on universal basic income.

[-] usernamefactory@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

Give kids the pamphlet, too. Get them while they’re young.

Two Halloweens ago, a family dressed as the Addams family came to my porch and everyone took candy, even the adults dressed as uncle fester and Morticia. I was inspired. So last year, my parents dresses up as Wednesday and Enid, and my 4'10" mom put on a wolf mask to cover her face and my dad walked around holding her hand and she came back to my house with a full bag of candy.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

My kid is nineteen and trick or treating with someone raised Jehovah’s Witness who’s never gone before.

This is the true meaning of Halloween: Corrupting souls and stealing them from Jesus.

[-] AlternatePersonMan@lemmy.world 91 points 3 days ago

As a kid who grew up tall (and therefore given weird like very early). 100%. These days, I don't even care if it's an adult trick or treating, and they're not wearing a costume. Let people have fun. Let people be kids.

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 33 points 3 days ago

Yeah, my last year I was 12 and around 5’9. I got some looks

[-] dethedrus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago

Are you me? I was a giant at 11 when I hit 5’9”!

Still there quite a few decades later.

One year, I think I was around 12, I told my family that I thought maybe I was too old to trick-or-treat so I would figure something else out. They were effusive about how wrong I was and unanimously told me absolutely not, I was still a kid and 100% I had to go trick-or-treating.

The next year I assumed I was still young enough, since they were so insistent the last time, so I told them I planned on going again. They all gave me worried looks and said I was clearly too old.

I don’t remember what age it was, but there is an exact age that people find acceptable, apparently. I’m tempted to go out now, many years later, just out of spite.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Do it. You can grab a handful from my bowl.

[-] Aneb@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Thats always been my question for the childless adults. We should be able to dress and walk around maybe an hour after dark to different houses and if there's q party stay for a drink

[-] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

In Des Moines, Iowa trick or treaters go out on Beggar's Night so adults can have their own parties on Halloween 🧡🖤🧡

I lived in SE Idaho and the people there were ruthless. Trick or treating was over by age 12, and people wouldn't give candy out to teenagers. Trick or treating ended by 7:00 and people didn't like you coming to their neighborhood.

[-] HurricaneLiz@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Everything I've heard about Idaho is creepy to me, and this just adds to it 😭

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 74 points 3 days ago

I don't care if you're four, fourteen, or forty; you can have all the damn candy you want.

[-] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 25 points 3 days ago

If you turn up at my house wearing anything approaching a costume and you say "trick or treat" you get trick or treat.

[-] calliope@retrolemmy.com 12 points 2 days ago

You don’t have to have a costume on. I’ll give anyone candy on Halloween.

I never understood people who got bent out of shape about giving a 14 year old 9 cents worth of candy one day a year.

[-] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Are those 9 cents worth of candy in the room for us?

No for real, hasn't candy, like anything else, become expensive?

[-] TheJesusaurus@piefed.ca 8 points 1 day ago

Yes, I was using a form of language known as "hyperbole" where you deliberately exaggerate to make a point.

However. A quick google shows me I can buy a box of 100 mini chocolate bars for $13 at Walmart, or roughly 13¢ per bar.

i don't care if a middle aged man shows up, life is better if we invest in joy

[-] Polisheocket@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago

It’s an old school Boomer mindset. My parents used to get drunk and mess with the older looking kids. Kinda messed up now that I look back at it

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

Thank you. My kids are enormous beasts that look much older than they are.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

One of my neighbors was giving out nips and scratch tickets for the grownups last Halloween.

He just got his 2-month chip...don't think he'll be doing that again this year.

[-] tacosanonymous@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 2 days ago

I have teens that don’t even dress up. I give em candy but I’m gonna complain that they’re not even trying.

Sure I’m giving out candy to be part of the community but my reward is seeing people in costumes. Don’t break the contract or I’m gonna pick “trick.”

[-] EchoCranium@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 day ago

Those are the goth kids dressing up as normies for one night. They get candy.

[-] zoltanshields@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago

Yeah unless you're here with a younger sibling if you're not dressed up you're getting a quick scoop of the candy nobody else seems to be taking. Like enjoy your Swedish fish, why are you here if the magic is gone?

Anyone who comes to my door gets candy but you don't get to both want to trick-or-treat and be too cool for trick-or-treating.

[-] PlantDadManGuy@lemmy.world 25 points 3 days ago

Plus there are lots of special needs teenagers out there who really don't want to explain their diagnosis while dressed up as Dracula in front of their friends ...

[-] Frostbeard@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

You show up in a costume at a reasonable hour fair go. When three highschoolers show up at 2145 out of costume asking if I have some candy you can fuck off

[-] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 13 points 2 days ago

If my porch light is off, nobody is getting candy from me, and I'm not coming to the door.

If my porch light is on, everybody gets candy.
