Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Here's the results of what I've called the Community Criteria Survey.

Note that you did not have to answer any questions, so there are different numbers of responses for different questions.

First up, the demographic questions. I'm keen to do a fuller census survey like Lemmy.ca does, and will probably do this annually around the anniversary of the site in June.

Which instance(s) do you have an account on that you use to interact with Lemmy.nz communities?

Note this was multiselect, so people could choose multiple.

graph showing 16 responses for lemmy.nz, 4 for lemmy.world, 1 for lemmy.ml, 1 for beehaw.org, 1 for mastodon.nz, 3 other

Where do you live?

graph showing 6 responses for Auckland, 7 for Wellington, 3 for Christchurch, 1 for Hamilton, 1 for USA, 3 other

How old are you?

It seems the majority of our users are aged 30-50.

graph showing 2 responses for 20-29, 6 for 30-39, 9 for 40-49, 1 for 50-59, 2 no answer

Next up are the questions about communities.

Do you think communities on Lemmy.nz should be focused on people who live in NZ, or should we add communities with a more general audience? For example, !politics@lemmy.nz discusses NZ politics, with a relatively narrow audience. We could add communities with a more general audience, such as !rocketlab@lemmy.nz, which could have interested users from all over the world, and discussion that is not NZ-centric. Which of the following best describes your feelings?

Mixed responses here, it seems we will be doing surveys before we add communities as the biggest share thought a case by case basis was appropriate, and the remainder were split on whether we should only have NZ targeted communities or are happy with more general communities.

graph showing 5 prefer NZ focused, 5 happy with general audience, 10 responses for It depends - would prefer case by case basis

Specifically looking at the case of a Rocket Lab community, and considering all factors such as: Rocket Lab was founded in NZ, and launches from Māhia Peninsula in NZ Rocket Lab is a corporate entity A Rocket Lab community may not have a lot of activity outside of launches A Rocket Lab community would have a general audience, being the first Lemmy.nz community not specifically focused on people living in NZ or with close ties to NZ Posts on communities on Lemmy.nz will show in the "Local" feed Would you support the creation of a Rocket Lab community !rocketlab@lemmy.nz?

graph showing 10 responses supporting adding the community, 2 responses showing they are opposed to adding the community, 8 indifferent

I wasn't sure of the best community for this, but as this one sort of acts as our meta community I thought this was the best place for it.

He isn't angry. It's fake outrage. He is playing from the Trump handbook. He wants to be our version of Trump.

534

Who could have seen that coming!

Rocket Lab is giving their various spacecraft platforms unique names, rather than calling them all "Photon".

  • Photon: The basic kick-stage + power, propulsion, and communications.
  • Explorer: Optimized for lunar and interplanetary missions.
  • Pioneer: Capable of re-entry and payload return to Earth.
  • Lightning: Optimized for long-term communications and sensing in LEO.

This is a community to discuss all things Rocket Lab, the US/New Zealand aerospace company. Thanks to Dave for polling the community and setting things up!

Here are some Rocket Lab facts:

  • The company was founded in 2006 in New Zealand. In 2013, they moved their registration to the U.S. for funding/growth reasons, and now operate launch pads and manufacturing facilities in both countries.
  • Their workhorse launch vehicle is Electron, a two-stage kerolox rocket capable of delivering 300 kg to Low Earth Orbit.
  • Electron is the first orbital rocket to use electric-pump-fed engines.
  • They are developing a much larger launch vehicle called Neutron, which will be a methalox rocket capable of delivering 13 tonnes to LEO.
  • The first launch of Neutron could happen by the end of this year.

Upcoming Electron launches:

  • March 12th/13th: Owl Night Long, launching out of Launch Complex 1, Māhia Peninsula, New Zealand
  • March 20th: Live and Let Fly, launching out of Wallops Flight Facility, Virginia, USA
  • NET April: NeonSat-1 & ACS3, launching out of Launch Complex 1, Māhia Peninsula, New Zealand

I'll create dedicated launch threads with more info for each as we get closer.

Big thanks again to Dave for setting this up. Looking forward to growing this community! Suggestions and feedback are welcome!

Edit: Thanks also to absGeekNZ for volunteering to co-moderate this community.

Two people are in hospital following an explosion in a central Wellington apartment building on Friday afternoon.

"When crews investigated they found there'd been an explosion in one of the apartments, and so we are now investigating the cause of that explosion."

Cold, draughty, doesn't meet Healthy Homes standards, and in need of extensive renovations. It sounds like the place is pretty tired.

David Seymour also has the academia in his crosshairs. It will be interesting to watch him undermine trust in science and the "educated elite" like his hero Donald Trump has done.

549

Seymour is following in Trump's footsteps in attacking the press. it won't be long before he uses the phrase "enemy of the people" and "fake news".

It's going to be a tough three years for the press under relentless pressure from the government to only report positive news about them.

This story keeps on giving. He lives in Auckland, Parliament was not in session, but hosted a party for his extended family at this unlivable place, and then it turns out he's actually stayed there at least a couple of nights.

I wonder who paid for the private Christmas do at the place he doesn't live. Did he have it in the apartment or in the public reception areas. Some other articles suggest he's also stayed there other times as well.

So, very unlivable then. I wonder, was he even staying in the apartment he was claiming the $52k benefit on?
