The government has announced it plans to urgently repeal legislation which would have required Inland Revenue to report on the tax system's equity, efficiency and certainty.

Welcome to today’s daily kōrero!

Anyone can make the thread, first in first served. If you are here on a day and there’s no daily thread, feel free to create it!

Anyway, it’s just a chance to talk about your day, what you have planned, what you have done, etc.

So, how’s it going?

Genuinely surprised by this one. What is there in Lower Hutt worth travelling for?

The party of choice is going to force people to have to drive to get around by ensuring there are no viable alternatives. Worst government in a generation by far.

....What the fuck?

What, then, would the proposal change?

"Nothing," says Andrew Geddis, a professor of law at the University of Otago.

Legislation is intended to solve problems, he says. "What is the social problem here that requires a solution? English is already an official language. It can be used in all public settings."

Geddis refers to the policy as "virtue signalling": "There seem to be some people out there who fear English is under threat and is somehow going to be overtaken in New Zealand. This [policy] seems to be a way to try to respond to that fear."

A sign for cyclists indicating to perform a hook turn with graffiti "abolish all forms of government"

Dunno why, it just seemed funny

We've got contents insurance with AA and from next year we'll be paying 33% more. We have had 2 claims for a different policy this year, one at fault, one not, and they said it wouldn't impact our premiums. Is this common for everyone? I understand it goes up because of all the floods, but 33% is very significant.

Quite a well thought out response from the chief executive of Te Papa regarding the treaty exhibit and the damage done to it.

For better or worse, the English version on display was the original document, and represents what the European powers that be thought they were agreeing to. It deserves to be displayed, in my view.

A proposal to deal with Wellington City Council’s significant external economic pressures while continuing to deliver for the capital city was today presented to elected members working on the 2024-34 Long-term Plan.

The initial starting point for next year’s rates increase following input from elected members was 26%.

With additional levers being pulled, today's budget proposes significant reductions in planned capital and operating expenditure and would result in a predicted rates increase of around 14-16% for the 2024/25 financial year.
