Recently watched The Third Man. I really hate just how many people in the news seem to have taken Orson Wells' speech to heart.

Just engineering something to be garbage for no other reason than so that people will buy more is unethical. That said, there are always trade offs and durability has to be weighed against other priorities.
For example, cars used to have much bigger bumpers which were expected to protect against damage in low speed impacts. Those went away because the requirements changed, the low speed crash test was out, and fuel efficiency requirements were in.
Or there's incandescent bulbs. They were ubiquitous for over a century, and yet they were constantly burning out and changing them was just a fact of life. Manufacturers could have easily made a more robust filament so the bulb would last longer, but doing so would have dramatically decreased the output of the bulb.

It's insane that it isn't illegal to take someone's money and then unilaterally change the terms of the deal after the fact. Can you imagine a customer writing new terms of service and sending it to the company and expecting it to become a binding contract if they don't immediately cancel the subscription?
At most, any changes they make should not take effect until the subscription renews, and even then, changing the terms should also end any automatic renewal because it's a new agreement.

Banned for downvoting a single post

Ban happened on May 22, the post I downvoted was posted on May 21. Had to go to an app to be able to see the downvote, which is why it's rounding the date differently than on desktop.
Prior to that my only interactions with the community were comments in February of 2025 and November of 2024, neither of which were particularly controversial and which have not been removed.
So either pelespirit went through and banned anyone who didn't like his post, or he has it automated and doesn't say anything about it in the rules. Given that he is the only one allowed to post in the community, that would be even more petty.

Unless they had probable cause to believe there was a bomb, that's absolutely no excuse for a search. Might as well just get rid of the fourth amendment altogether if police can just imagine the possibility of a dangerous object and excuse searching anything at any time.
If she really thought there was a bomb, she is recklessly handling this herself instead of calling in a properly trained and equipped bomb squad. But far worse, she claims she needed to check it so as not bring a bomb to the station, but apparently has no problem potentially handling a bomb around a bunch of innocent bystanders.
That she is lying in order to justify what she knew to be an illegal search is actually the least damning interpretation. Either way though, the evidence should be thrown out along with her career.
If only he'd sent war plans, he could have just shrugged and moved on like nothing happened.
Microsoft said Windows 10 would be the last version I'd ever use. They didn't know how right they were. I've been gradually switching to Linux, and will absolutely never use Windows 11 or any other version they put out.
The "locust" bit is getting far too little attention. The history of comparing undesirable populations with vermin is long and filled with horrific violence.
